Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 3, Salt Lake (Angels) 1
Dallas Beeler kept Salt Lake in check and Adron Chambers two-run homer gave Iowa the win.
In the Box: Iowa scored all three of their runs in the sixth, two coming on Adron Chambers first homer of the season. Iowa tied the game when Mike Olt doubled and scored when the right-fielder misplayed a hit off the bat of Mike Baxter. Iowa only had five hits.
Pitching Chart: Dallas Beeler (6-5, 4.52 ERA) fanned seven over 6.2 innings and got the win. The right-hander gave up an unearned run in the fourth and allowed six hits and two walks in the 96-pitch outing.....Blake Cooper (2.98 ERA) got the final out of the 7th with two on for his 8th hold. Zac Rosscup (7.376 ERA) fanned two in the 8th and Brian Schlitter (1.14 ERA) earned his 20th save with a scoreless ninth.
I-Cubs Notes: Iowa has Sunday off and return home on Monday for a eight-game home stand.
Southern League—AA—Game 1—Tennessee 6, Montgomery (Rays) 5—8 innings; Game 2— Montgomery 5, Tennessee 2
Jonathan Mota’s two-run single in the bottom of the 8th won the opener but Montgomery (67-56) got revenge in the nightcap over Tennessee (66-58).
In the Box: Game 1—SS Jonathan Mota delivered a walk-off two-run single in the bottom of the 8th for the win after the Biscuit took the lead in extra innings. Mota finished 2-for-4 with three RBI...Daniel Vogelbach made his return to AA and slugged a solo homer to tie the game in the sixth, his 6th of the season...C Willson Contreras was 1-for-4 with a RBI........Game 2—Only five hits for the Smokie sin game two as Jacob Hannemann went 1-for-3 with a RBI while Bijan Rademacher added a sac fly.
Pitching Chart: Game 1—Tayler Scott (4-1, 4.34 ERA) got the win in relief despite surrendering a run in the 8th, his only blemish in 2.2 innings. Scott threw 44 pitches, fanned two and walked one.....Jeffry Antigua got the start and gave up four runs on nine hits and three walks over 5.1 frames. Antigua fanned four and had a game score of 35 in his 91-pitch outing........Game 2—Fernando Cruz (2-1, 5.64) got the start and threw four innings, giving up three runs with five strikeouts....Corey Black (4.71 ERA) surrendered two runs in his two innings of work and Gerardo Concepcion (9.43 ERA) threw a scoreless 7th.
Smokies News: Tennessee’s game at Chattanooga was canceled due to early on Sunday morning and will be made up as a twin-bill on Monday with first pitch at 5:15 p.m. EST.
Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 10, Frederick (Orioles) 5
Myrtle Beach (74-50) blasted four homers and beat Frederick (60-65) to even the series.
In the Box: Four homers plated all 10 runs for the Pelicans. Pin-Chieh Chen got the long ball party started with a three-run blast in the third, his second of the season....Benjamin Carhart made it 6-0 MB, with another three-run shot, his 4th and second since returning from the DL.....Mark Zagunis launched a two-run shot in the 7th, his 8th, and Jacob Rogers capped off the home run parade with a two blast in the 8th, his 12th and first since coming back to the Pelicans. Rogers finished 3-for-4.
Pitching Chart: Paul Blackburn (7-5, 3.18 ERA) blanked the Keys for six innings but ran out of gas in the 7th, getting charged with five runs. The right-hander fanned two and had a game score of 42....David Garner (1.78 ERA) continues to impress out of the bullpen as the hard-throwing right hander got the final eight outs of the game without allowing a hit.
Pelicans News: Brad Markey (5-0, 0.85 ERA) takes the hill on Sunday at Frederick.
Midwest League—Low A—Fort Wayne (Padres) 2, South Bend 0
Three Fort Wayne (68-54) pitchers combined to blank South Bend (56-65).
Pitching Chart: Jake Stinnett (5-6, 4.53 ERA) pitched 5.2 innings, allowing both runs on four hatstand two walks. He fanned six and had a game score of 57....Jordan Minch (2.88 ERA) and Alex Santana (2.63 ERA) combined to keep the Tincaps off the board the final 3.1 innings, as Santana fanned four in his two frames.
SB-Cubs News: Zach Hedges (7-7, 3.73 ERA) gets the start on Sunday afternoon in the series finale. Cubs are nine games back with just over two weeks left in the season.
Northwest League—Short-Season—Salem-Keizer (Giants) 6, Eugene 5
Salem-Keizer (32-30) scored three runs in the bottom of the 9th to tie and the game and then won on a walk-off in the 10th to beat Eugene (31-31).
In the Box: Donnie Dewees (.268) extended his hit streak to 15 games as the Cubs second-round pick in June went 2-for-5 with a run and a RBI.....C Ian Rice knocked in three runs, had two hits and walked twice.....Frandy Delarosa was 2-for-5 with two runs scored.....2015 draft picks Daniel Spingola (31st round) and P.J. Higgins (11th round) made their NWL debuts. Spingola went 1-for-5 and Higgins had two singles in five at-bats.
Pitching Chart: Kyle Twomey got the start and went 2-2 frames, allowing an unearned on four walks and a hit......Preston Morrison worked 2.1 innings, surrendering a run on five hits.....Pedro Araujo (2.55 ERA) fanned three in two shutout innings. Craig Brooks (4.70 ERA) pitched a scoreless 8th but ran into problems in the 9th, yielding a run and left with one out and the bases loaded....Greyfer Eregua (2.23 ERA) allowed two inherited runners to score to tie the game and then gave up the game-winning run in the 10th
Emeralds Notes: Casey Blomquist (0-0, 1.69 ERA) gets the start on Sunday as the Ems return home to face Spokane. Eugene still holds a one-game lead over Hillsboro for the second half title with Salem-Keizer two games back.
Arizona Rookie League—A’s 6, Cubs 4
A’s (22-28) scored three times in the top of the ninth to beat the Cubs (28-21).
Pitching Chart: Jesus Camargo fanned seven over 4.1 innings but got tagged for three runs on six hits and a walk. The 19-year-old has pitched well in his first season of pro ball after signing as a free agent out of Mexico. He has 50 K in 41.1 IP with only 10 BB.....Tanner Griggs entered the game with the bases loaded in the fifth and got the final two outs but not before the A’s scored twice.....Junior Marte, one of the Cubs top arms in the DSL this season, fanned four in two scoreless innings.....Gabriel Lima, a 19-year-old right-hander that was the top starter in the VSL for the Cubs, worked a scoreless 8th but surrendered three runs in the ninth on three hits and three walks, and took the loss.
Cubs Notes: Cubs are 1.5 games behind the Giants and face the first-place team on Sunday.
Dominican Summer League—Yankees II 7, Cubs 6
Cubs (43-29) ended their DSL season with a loss to the Yankees II (40-32).
In the Box: SS Fidel Mejia (.275) went 3-for-5 while RF Luis Ubiera (.195) had two hits and knocked in a pair of runs. 3B Miguel Ruiz (.182) doubled home two runs and 2B Franklin Tineo (.214) doubled and scored twice.
Pitching Chart: Deibi Torres (6.17 ERA) got the start and went three innings, allowing three runs on six hits and a walk. Jose Morel (7.67 ERA) surrendered three runs over three innings and Jhon Romero (0-1, 3.60 ERA) took the loss, giving up the winning run in the bottom of the 7th after the Cubs tied the game.
