Cubs Aug. 24 Minors Recap

Iowa’s Javier Baez went 4-for-4 and smacked his 13th homer while Eric Jokisch and two relievers one-hit Fresno for a 9-0 win. South Bend kept their playoff hopes alive and it was lights out in Eugene.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 9, Fresno (Astros) 0
Eric Jokisch and two relievers combined for a one-hit shutout and Iowa scored eight times in the fourth to take the series opener.

In the Box: 3B Javier Baez (.315) went 4-for-4 and smacked his 13th homer, a two-run blast in the eight-run sixth. He was a triple shy of the cycle and scored three times, stealing his 16th base...Taylor Teagaraden (.319) knocked in three runs and Chris Valaika added a two-run single.

Pitching Chart: Eric Jokisch (4-3, 4.26 ERA) blanked the Grizzlies on one hit over six innings, issuing two walks with four strikeouts. He only threw 79 pitches, 48 for strikes, and had a game score of 72.....Armando Rivero (3.35 ERA) was perfect for two frames and Trevor Cahill (5.51 ERA) pitched the ninth.

I-Cubs Notes: Felipe Paulino (4-7, 4.65 ERA) get the ball in the day game and Drake Britton (7-8, 5.19 ERA) is scheduled to start game two on Tuesday night.......2B Tommy La Stella and LHP Zac Rosscup were both promoted to Chicago. The Cubs placed OF Jorge Soler and RHP Jason Motte on the DL.

Chattanooga (68-55) took the opener but Tennessee (67-59) got revenge in the night cap thanks to a solo homer and two RBI from Jonathan Mota.

In the Box: GAME 1—C Willson Contreras continued his breakout season with his 8th homer, a solo shot, added a single, and walked once....3B Jeimer Candelario (.286) doubled in three at-bats while LF Jacob Hannemann (.245) added a sacrifice fly.......GAME 2—Smokies made the most of their six hits, Jonathan Mota slugged a solo homer in the 5th to give the Smokies the lead and added a sacrifice fly. Anthony Giansanti delivered a two-run pitch-hit double in the sixth. Contreras (.326) went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.

Pitching Chart: GAME 1—Pierce Johnson (6-2, 2.22 ERA) went the distance, allowing four runs on six hits and a walk over six innings. He threw 89 pitches, 61 for strikes, and fanned five......GAME 2—Frank Bastia got the start and threw four innings, allowing a run on two hits and two walks. Batista fanned four and threw 69 pitches, 42 for strikes.....Matt Brazis (1-0, 0.79 ERA) tossed 1.2 innings of shutout relief and earned the win......P.J. Francescon (1.59 ERA) got the final four outs, stranding a pair of inherited runners in the 8th to record his 20th save.

Myrtle Beach (75-51) had no answers for White Sox pitching prospect Yency Almonte as Winston-Salem (66-60) beat the Pelicans.

In the Box: RF Mark Zagunis (.278) went 2-for-4 and tripled in the Pelicans only run. 2B Chesny Young (.329) singled and scored while DH Benjamin Carhart (.260) was 1-for-3 with a walk.

Pitching Chart: Tyler Skulina (3-5, 3.29 ERA) blanked the Dash for three innings but gave up three runs in the fourth and only got one out. The right-hander allowed four hits, walked one and fanned four in his 61-pitch outing.....Tyler Ihrig (2.91 ERA) gave up a run over 4.2 frames and David Berg (2.31 ERA) tossed a scoreless ninth.

Pelicans News: Jen-Ho Tseng (5-7, 3.62 ERA) makes his 21st start on Tuesday night.......Carhart was named the Carolina League Player of the Week on Monday. In four games, the Cubs 35th round pick in 2012 went 7-for-14 with three homers and eight RBI.

South Bend (58-65) tallied two runs in the top of the sixth to beat West Michigan (66-59) in the series opener.

In the Box: DH Kevin Encarnacion (.283) went 3-for-4 and knocked in the go-ahead run in the sixth to lead the offense.....2B David Bote (.259) went 1-for-3 and scored twice while 1B Matt Rose (.308) singled and got credit for a RBI.

Pitching Chart: Erick Leal (9-8, 4.24 ERA) scattered seven hits over five innings, surrendering two runs with two walks and seven punchouts. Leal threw 93 pitches and had a game score of 50......Michael Wagner (3.22 ERA) earned his first save for South Bend, tossing four scoreless innings with four punchouts.

SB-Cubs News: Trevor Clifton (6-9, 4.34 ERA) takes the mound Tuesday night in Michigan......South Bend trails West Michigan by four games for the final wild card spot.

Game was suspended in the top of the fourth due to a light malfunction. The game will be completed on Tuesday night as part of a double header with each game going seven innings.

In the Box: Donnie Dewees extended his hit streak to 17 games with a single in the first and scored on a two-run homer from Eloy Jimenez, his fifth. It was the only two hits for the Ems.

Pitching Chart: Carson Sands (4.37 ERA) worked three innings, surrendering a run in the first on a hit and a walk. He fanned four and faced 12 hitters in the outing.

Emeralds Notes: Justin Steele (3-1, 2.65 ERA) is scheduled to start on Tuesday night in the second game.

Cubs (15-8) moved into a first-place tie with a win over the Angels (6-17).

In the Box: Cubs took advantage of a passed ball, two wild pitches and two errors.....1B Chris Pieters (.258) delivered a two-run double in the Cubs four-run first and finished 1-for-5. CF Darryl Wilson (.264) and LF Kevonte Mitchell (.250) both had two hits and scored twice while RF Robert Garcia (.331) and DH Donnie Cimino (.220) added two hits each.

Pitching Chart: Dylan Cease (1-2, 2.63 ERA) fanned five over three shutout innings, allowing a hit and a walk. In eight games this season, the Cubs sixth-round pick last year has a line of 24 IP, 12 H, 12 R, 7 ER, 16 BB, 25 K.....Santiago Rodriguez (3.55 ERA) gave up a run on three hits in two innings with a strikeout.....Jesus Castillo (4.58 ERA) allowed a run in the sixth and tossed a scoreless seventh....John Williamson (1-0, 0.0 ERA) earned his first pro win with two perfect innings to close out the Angels.

Cubs Notes: Cubs have a twin-bill with the Angels on Tuesday, take Wednesday off, and then close out their 2015 schedule with one game with the Diamondbacks and back-to-back games with the A’s. Cubs and the Giants are tied for first with the D-Backs 1.5 games back.
