Cubs Aug. 25 Minors Recap

Eloy Jimenez hit three homers as Eugene swept Spokane and Donnie Dewees extended his hit streak to 18 games. Jen-Ho Tseng fanned a career-high nine hitters in Myrtle Beach’s win and the Cubs signed a pair of outfielders to minor league contracts.

Cubs sign Quintin Berry
The Cubs have singed outfielder Quintin Berry to a minor league deal and the 30-year-old made his debut for Iowa in the first game of the doubleheader. Berry, a 5th round pick of the Phillies back in 2006, made his pro debut for the Tigers in 2012 and also played in the majors for Boston (2013) and Baltimore (2014). Berry has spent the 2015 season in AAA Pawtucket (Red Sox) and was released on Aug. 21. In 106 games for this year, Berry hit .228/.329/.287 with 4 HR, 36 RBI and 35 stolen bases.

Cubs bring back Bonifacio
Chicago has signed former Cub Emilio Bonifacio to a minor league contract for the rest of the season and assigned the utility player to Iowa. Bonifacio was traded to the Braves last year in a deal that brought minor league catcher Victor Caratini to the Cubs. Bonifacio played in 47 for the White Sox (.167/.198/.192) this year before being released on Aug. 18.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Game 1—Iowa 3, Fresno (Grizzlies) 2; Game 2—Fresno 7, Iowa 3
Iowa won the opener but Fresno snapped their eight-game losing streak to the I-Cubs in the night-cap.

In the Box: GAME 1—Matt Szczur smacked his 8th homer, a solo shot in the second, and Mike Baxter (.275) delivered a two-run single in the fourth. Baxter also tripled. 3B Javier Baez (.314) went 1-for-3 and scored a run. Quintin Berry made his debut and went 0-2 with a sacrifice.......GAME 2—Only four hits for the I-Cubs, two from 1B Mike Olt (.254). 3B Christian Villanueva (.260) was 1-for-3 with a two-run single and SS Javier Baez added a RBI single.

Pitching Chart: GAME 1—Drake Britton (5.14 ERA) got the start and worked into the fifth allowing two runs on five hits. He fanned three, threw 77 pitches, and had a game score of 47.....Ryan Buchter (1-0. 1.64 ERA) got the win in relief, recording the final two outs of the fifth and tossing a scoreless sixth....Brian Schlitter (1.12 ERA) picked up his 21st save despite walking two in the 7th.......GAME 2—Felipe Paulino (4-8, 4.79 ERA) got the start and lasted five innings, allowing six runs on seven hits with five walk.....Yoervis Medina tossed two shutout frames.

I-Cubs Notes: Carlos Pimentel (11-5, 2.98 ERA) gets the ball Wednesday night against Fresno.

Chattanooga (69-55) scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to beat Tennessee (67-60).

In the Box: Smokies had 11 hits but could only plate three runs....CF Albert Almora (.268), C Willson Contreras (.328), DH Taylor Davis (.297) and SS Jonathan Mota (.257) all had two hits with Almora (40) and Contreras (70) knocking in runs.

Pitching Chart: Felix Pena (5-8, 4.10 ERA) got the start and allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits nada walk. He fanned four in the 107-pitch outing with a game score of 59.....Juan Paniagua got charged with a blown save and ended up taking the loss, giving up two runs (one earned) on a hit and a walk in the seventh......Gerardo Concepcion worked a scoreless 8th.

Myrtle Beach (76-51) scored four runs in the bottom of the 7th to beat Winston-Salem (66-61).

In the Box: Pelicans scored all their runs in the 7th as 3B Jason Vosler (.258) doubled home RF Mark Zagunis (.279), SS Carlos Penalver (.198) walked with bases loaded, 2B Daniel Lockhart (.227) added a RBI ground out and CF Pin-Chieh Chen (.274) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Vosler and C Victor Caratini (.247) both had two hits.

Pitching Chart: Jen-Ho Tseng (6-7, 3.55 ERA) fanned a career-high nine hitters and held the Dash to a pair of runs. Tseng allowed four hits, walked one and had a game score of 69 in his 94-pitch outing.....David Garner (1.65 ERA) worked two scoreless frames for his second save.

West Michigan extended its second-half wild card lead to five games over South Bend and even the series.

In the Box: Cubs were held to five hits as both runs scored in the fifth on a two-run single from CF Kevin Encarnacion (.280). SS Gleyber Torres (.296) went 2-for-4 and LF Charcer Burks (.266) doubled in four at-bats.

Pitching Chart: Trevor Clifton (6-10, 4.34 ERA) went five innings, throwing 85 pitches, 48 for strikes. Clifton allowed three runs on eight hits with five walks......Daniel Lewis (2.94 ERA) got two outs in the 6th but issued three walks and was replaced by Jordan Minch (4.19 ERA). The left-hander stranded all three inherited runners but surrendered four runs over the final two frames.
