Cubs Aug. 28 Minors Recap

Jeffrey Baez and Gioskar Amya powered South Bend to a 10-3 win on Friday night and Andres Santiago twirled a gem as Tennessee blanked Jacksonville.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Sacramento @ Iowa
Friday nights game was rained out and the two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday with a 5:08 p.m. start time. Dallas Beeler (6-5, 4.52 ERA) and Eric Jokisch (4-3, 4.26 ERA) are scheduled to start for the I-Cubs.

I-Cubs Notes: C Taylor Davis was promoted from Tennessee to Iowa and LHP Zac Rosscup was optioned from Chicago to Iowa. RHP Brian Schlitter has been designated for assignment.......Iowa has made 194 player transactions, breaking the mark of 172 set in 2013.



Southern League—AA—Tennessee 7, Jacksonville (Marlins) 0
Andres Santiago tossed eight shutout innings as Tennessee (70-60) took the series opener from Jacksonville (53-77).

In the Box: Smokies scored twice in the fourth and added five more runs in the sixth.....CF Albert Almora may have gotten off to a slow start but he’s finishing the season strong. Hitting .342/.400/.482 in August, the 21-year-old had two hits and one RBI......RF Bijan Rademacher (.259) doubled and plated a pair of runs while LF Jacob Hannemann (.239), 3B Jeimer Candelario (.290), 2B Stephen Bruno (.261) and SS Ryan Dent (.225) all knocked in a run.

Pitching Chart: Andres Santiago (3-5, 4.14 ERA) blanked the Suns for eight innings, allowing two singles and issuing no walks. Santiago fanned six in his 99-pitch outing and had a game score of 84......Fernando Cruz (5.46 ERA) tossed a scoreless ninth.

Smokies News: Pierce Johnson (6-2, 2.22 ERA) takes the hill on Saturday night.....C Taylor Davis has been promoted to Iowa and C Tyler Pearson was activated from the DL.

Wilmington (60-70) scored three runs in the ninth to beat Myrtle Beach (76-53).

In the Box: DH Victor Caratini (.254) went 3-for-5 with a RBI and was a homer shy of the cycle. Chesny Young had two hits and scored once while Pin-Chieh Chen blasted a two-run homer in the Pelicans’ four-run 7th to take a 5-4 lead.

Pitching Chart: Duane Underwood (6-2, 2.63 ERA) made his first start in Myrtle Beach since leaving a game on June 26 with an arm injury. After two rehab games in Arizona, the 21-year-old right-hander threw four innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits and a walk. Underwood fanned three and threw 59 pitches, 36 for strikes......Jeremy Null (4.05 ERA) gave up two runs in his four innings of work, striking out four while surrendering four hits and a walk......Jasvir Rakkar (3-2, 2.93 ERA) was within one strike of a save but a two-run triple gave Wilmington the lead. Rakkar allowed four hits in the 9th.

Pelicans News: Paul Blackburn (7-5, 3.18 ERA) takes the mound Saturday night against the Blue Rocks......Myrtle Beach activated Underwood before the game from the DL and placed RHP Daury Torrez on the DL.

Jeffrey Baez and Gioskar Amaya both homered and combined for seven RBI in the win over Great Lakes.

In the Box: 1B Gioskar Amaya went 3-for-4, smacked his 4th homer and ended the night with four RBI while RF Jeffrey Baez (.285) was 4-for-5 and plated three runs, hitting his 8th homer and stealing his 33rd base.......CF Rashad Crawford (.282) is quietly having a solid season and the 21-year-old had two hits and scored once......Bryant Flete went 2-for-4 and scored twice while LF Kevin Encarnacion (.279) added a RBI....

Pitching Chart: Jake Stinnett (6-6, 4.32 ERA) was solid for seven innings, scattering six hits and a walk while yielding just one run. He fanned three and had a game score of 63......Jordan Minch (4.30 ERA) only got two outs in the eight, allowing a run on two hits and three walks.....Sam Wilson (7.02 ERA) stranded all three inherited runners in the 8th and surrendered a run in the 9th to earn his first MWL save.

SB-Cubs News: Zach Hedges (7-7, 3.73 ERA) makes his team-high 22nd start on Saturday night.

Northwest League—Short-Season—Hillsboro, Eugene
Hillsboro (17-13, 39-29) scored twice in the 8th to best Eugene (18-12, 35-33) and move within a game of the Emeralds for the second-half title.

In the Box: Ems outhit the Hops with CF Donnie Dewees (.271) and 3B P.J. Higgins (.360) each collecting two hits. Eugene scored their only run in the fifth when RF Alex Bautista (.267) doubled and scored on a 2B Frandy Delarosa (.278) ground out.

Pitching Chart: Preston Morrison (1-1, 0.95 ERA) was impressive in his start, fanning seven of the 10 hitters he faced. The Cubs 8th round pick in June went three innings, only allowing a single.....Kyle Twomey (1.77 ERA) allowed a run over 2.2 frames, giving up three hits while walking two.....Pedro Araujo (0-1, 2.82 ERA) got the Ems out of a jam in the sixth but surrendered two runs in the 8th.....Trey Masek (3.52 ERA) fanned the side in the ninth as Eugene pitchers recorded 15 punchouts on the night.

Emeralds Notes: The Ems look to keep their hold on first as they send Kyle Miller (1-1, 5.56 ERA) to the mound on Saturday night.

Cubs (15-9) remain in the a first-place tie with Gains despite falling to the A’s (10-17) on Friday night.

In the Box: Cubs took a1-0 lead in the first when RF Kevonte Mitchell (.214) walked, stole second and scored on a fielding error. 3B Carlos Jimenez (.231) tripled while CF Darryl Wilson (.263), DH Robert Garcia (.331) and C Tyler Payne (.192) added singles......LF Shawon Dunston made a rehab start and went 0-for-3. Dunston has been dealign with shoulder issues most of the season after starting the year in Myrtle Beach.

Pitching Chart: Austyn Willis (3-3, 3.45 ERA) gave up three runs on five hits over his three innings and took the loss.....M.T. Minacci (7.94 ERA) tossed a scoreless 4th but got charged with tagged with three runs in the 5th.....Heath Dwyer got the final two outs of the fifth, stranding an inherited runner, while third-round pick Bryan Hudson (2.70 ERA) surrendered two unearned runs over two innings in his fifth game......Enrique De Lo Rios (3.46 ERA) allowed a run in the 9th.
