Cubs Aug. 29 Minors Recap

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Game 1—Iowa 5, Sacramento (Giants) 1; Game 2—Iowa 2, Sacramento 1—12 innings
Eric Jokisch twirled a gem in the opener and Christian Villanueva’s walk-off single in the 12th won the nightcap as Iowa swept Sacramento.

In the Box: Game 1—2B Javier Baez (.319) extended his hit streak to 14 games with a single in the first and went 2-for-4 with a run scored....Iowa scored four runs in the first as 3B Christian Villanueva delivered a two-run single while 1B Mike Olt (.262) and RF Arismendy Alcantara (.233) added RBI. Olt ended the game 2-for-4 and added his 9th homer in the fifth.....Game 2—Cubs used singles by Mike Olt, Taylor Teagarden and Quintin Berry to plate a run in the second. In the 12th, a double by John Andreoli and a single from Mike Baxter set the table for Villanueva’s walk-off single. Cubs had 13 hits, two each from Baxter, Villanueva, Berry and Teagarden. Baez singled to up his hit streak to 15 games.

Pitching Chart: Game 1— Eric Jokisch (5-3, 3.94 ERA) took a shutout into the seventh but the River Cats pushed across a run. The left-hander allowed hive hits and a walk with two strikes in the efficient 86-pitch complete game, his first of the season. Game score 64.....Game 2—Frank Batista tossed four innings of one-hit ball, needing only 49 pitches. He fanned three and walked one for a game score of 62. The Cubs bullpen pitched eight innings of one-hit ball but that hit left the yard and tied the game in the 7th. Armando Rivero (3.29 ERA) and Trevor Cahill (5.09 ERA) both threw a perfect frame but Rafael Soriano (2.25 ERA) yielded a solo homer to send the game into extra innings. Blake Cooper (2.86 ERA) and Yoervis Medina (5.30 ERA) added two scoreless innings each and Ryan Buchter (2-0, 1.56 ERA) worked a perfect 12th and got credit for the win.

I-Cubs Notes: Iowa sends Dallas Beeler (6-5, 4.52 ERA) to the mound in the final home game of the season at Principal Park.

Southern League—AA—Tennessee 5, Jacksonville (Marlins) 3
Ryan Dent hit a pair of homers including a three-run bomb in the bottom of the 8th to lead Tennessee over Jacksonville.

In the Box: SS Ryan Dent (.239) smacked a solo homer in the 4th and then added a three-run shot in the 8th to turn a 3-2 deficit into a 5-3 win. Dent finished the night 4-for-4.....Albert Almora (.274) extended his hitting streak to 10 games, going 2-for-3 with a walk. Almora is 15-41 during the streak with five runs and seven RBI. The 21-year-old had a 13-game hitting streak earlier this month and is batting .350/.411/.487 in August.....2B Stephen Bruno (.264) added a pair of doubles and scored twice while Pierce Johnson helped his own cause with a RBI.

Pitching Chart: Pierce Johnson (6-2, 2.22 ERA) fanned eight over seven solid innings, allowing a run on five hits and three walks. Game score of 68.....Corey Black (4.83 ERA) surrendered the lead in the 8th as the right-hander allowed two runs on two hits and three walks....Starling Peralta (3-1, 2.15 ERA) got the win even through he only threw five pitches, recording the final out of the 8th with the bases loaded.....P.J. Francescon (1.69 ERA) worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his 22nd save.

Smokies News: IF Bryant Flete has been promoted from South Bend to Tennessee and SS Jonathan Mota has been placed on the DL.

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 1, Wilmington (Royals) 0
Jason Vosler’s walk-off homer in the bottom of the 11th gave Myrtle Beach the win over Wilmington.

In the Box: With two outs in the 11th, 3B Jason Vosler (.248) launched a homer over the right field wall for the walk-off win. It was Vosler’s 6th home for the Pelicans and his 10th of the season.....2B Chesny Young (.331) singled in the 11th to extend his hitting streak to nine games....Pin-Chieh Chen went 3-for-5 but was thrown out twice attempting to steal second.

Pitching Chart: Paul Blackburn’s (7-5, 3.11 ERA) night only lasted two innings and 35 pitches. After working a 1-2-3 first, Blackburn allowed a single, hitter a batter, and issued a walk to load the bases but retired the next three hitters, one on strikes to get out of the jam without any damage. Blackburn missed a month with an injury but has made seven appearances since coming off the DL, working into the sixth in his last four starts......Tyler Ihrig (2.54 ERA) fanned six over five shutout innings, allowing four hits with two walks.....Michael Heesch (2.04 ERA) was perfect in his three innings, striking out five of the nine hitters he faced....David Berg (1-1, 1.98) walked two and allowed a single in two scoreless frames.

Pelicans News: Mark Zagunis and Chesny Young have been named to the Carolina League post-season all-star team. Manager Mark Johnson was named manager of the year and Nathan Barnett was tabbed as the league’s best play-by-play announcer.......In the final home game of the year, Pelicans send Tyler Skulina (3-5, 3.29 ERA) to the mound.

Midwest League—Low A—Great Lakes (Dodgers) 15, South Bend 0
Great Lakes pounded South Bend to take the series.

In the Box: Only five hits for the Cubs, two from DH Jeffrey Baez (.288). 2B David Bote (.257) and 3B Jesse Hodges (.243) both doubled.

Pitching Chart: Zach Hedges (7-7, 3.73 ERA) got tagged for five runs over the first two innings and finished with a line of 4 IP, 11 H, 10 R, 9 ER, 2 BB, 6 K......Daniel Lewis (2.86 ERA) made his 22nd appearance, allowing two inherited runners to score in the fifth. He got the final three outs of the fifth but the first three batters of the sixth all reached, one eventually scoring.....Corbin Hoffner fanned three in two scoreless frames and 2B David Bote allowed two homers and four runs in two innings.

SB-Cubs News: South Bend heads to Bowling Green on Sunday and send Erick Leal (9-8, 4.24 ERA) to the hill.

Northwest League—Short-Season—Hillsboro (Diamondbacks) 3, Eugene 0
Four HIllsboro pitchers blanked Eugene on six hits.

In the Box: LF Eloy Jimenez (.281) went 2-for-4 with a double while DH Adonis Paula (.270) tripled. Ems loaded the bases in the 7th but Jimenez grounded out to end the frame.

Pitching Chart: Kyle Miller (1-1, 5.56 ERA) only surrendered one hit over the first three innings, striking out two while walking one.....RH Casey Bloomquist (0-1, 1.62 ERA) gave up a run in the fifth and took the loss, despite only allowing one hit and striking out four. RH Scott Effross (1.42 ERA) got charged with two runs over two innings and RH Craig Brooks (3.72) worked a perfect ninth.

Emeralds Notes: LH Carson Sands gets the ball in Eugene’s final home game of the year.....Emeralds and Hillsboro are tied at 18-13 for the second half title and the regular season ends with three games in HIllsboro Sept. 4-6.

Arizona Rookie League—Cubs 3, A’s 2
Carlos Sepulveda’s single in the bottom of the 8th scored Chris Pieters and sent the Cubs to the AZL playoffs.

In the Box: In the 8th, 1B Chris Pieters (.257) singled, took second on a sacrifice bunt from 3B Carlos Jimenez (.236) and scored on 2B Carlos Sepulveda’s single. RF Robert Garcia (.341) clubbed his second homer, leading off the first, and added a RBI single in the second, plating LF Kevonte Mitchell (.235), who doubled and stole third. Garcia finished 3-for-3 while Sepulveda (.281) went 2-for-3.

Pitching Chart: Jesus Camargo (3.30 ERA) fanned seven over five innings for a game score of 62. He allowed a run on three hits and two walks.....Working two frames, John Williamson (0.00 ERA) got charged with a blown save, yielding an unearned run in the 7th as the A’s tied the game at 2-2.....Ariel Ovando (4-0, 0.43 ERA) tossed two scoreless innings with three punchouts and earned the win.

Cubs Notes: Cubs start the playoffs on Monday with right-hander Dylan Cease scheduled to start.
