Cubs Aug. 31 Minors Recap

Ryan Williams continues to show he’s one of the Cubs top pitching prospects despite the lack of pre-season fanfare as last year’s 10th round pick won his 10th AA game with six shutout innings. Iowa spoiled the AAA debut of Julio Urias and the Mesa Cubs playoff game was suspended after four innings due to rain.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 9, Oklahoma City (Dodgers) 3
Iowa knocked around Dodgers top prospect Julio Urias and moved to within three games of first place.

In the Box: The I-Cubs spoiled the AAA debut of 18-year-old left-hander Julio Urias, scoring three runs in his only inning on two hits and four walks. After retiring the first two batter, a walk, a single and two more walks plated a run. LF Mike Baxter (.279) then delivered a two-run single....1B Taylor Davis went 3-for-4 with three RBI while 3B Christian Villanueva (.264), C Luke Carlin (.149), and 2B Arismendy Alcantara (.233) all plated runs in the win.

Pitching Chart: Felipe Paulino (5-8, 4.82 ERA) gave up a three-run homer in the first and then blanked the Dodgers for the next four frames ending the night with a line of 5 IP, 4 H, 3 ER, 3 B, 3 K....Zac Rosscup fanned three in two perfect frames while Rafael Soriano worked a 1-2-3 8th.....P.J. Francescon made his AAA debut, allowing two hits in a scoreless ninth.

I-Cubs Notes: A pair of Iowa pitchers were honored on Monday. Carlos Pimentel was named to the PCL post-season all-star team as the right-handed pitcher while Eric Jokisch was named pitcher of the week in the PCL for Aug. 24-30.......To make room on the 40-man roster, Cubs designated Mike Olt for assignment after trading for Seattle OF Austin Jackson.

Southern League—AA—Tennessee 9, Jacksonville (Marlins) 1
Ryan Williams tossed six shutout innings and Tennessee rocked Jacksonville pitching for 11 hits.

In the Box: RF Bijan Rademacher (.260) tripled and knocked in four runs while CF Albert Almora (.276) went 2-for-4 to extend his hit streak to 12 games. Almora hit .352/.413/.504 in August with 22 runs, 14 doubles and 15 RBI.....SS Ryan Dent (.256), C Willson Contreras (.326), and 1B Daniel Vogelbach (.284) all added two hits.

Pitching Chart: Ryan Williams improved to 10-2 and lowered his ERA to 2.79 with six shutout innings. He allowed four hits, fanned two and had a game score of 66 in his 70-pitch outing.....

Smokies News: P.J. Francescon was promoted to AAA Iowa and RHP James Pugliese was sent from Myrtle Beach to AA. Francescon led the Smokies with 22 saves in 42 games (4-2, 1.69 ERA) while Pugliese was 4-2 with a 2.62 ERA in 30 relief appearances for the Pelicans.

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach
Pelicans had Monday off and end the regular season with three games in Potomac (Nationals) and a five-game set in Wilmington. RH Tyler Skulina (3-5, 3.29 ERA) gets the ball on Tuesday night against the P-Nats.



Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 10, Bowling Green (Rays) 4
South Bend scored five times in the second and beat Bowling Green.

In the Box: RF Jeffrey Baez (.287) continued his torrid pace, going 2-for-5 including a grand slam in the second, his 9th homer of the season. CF Rashad Crawford (.279) smacked a two-run homer while DH Charcer Burks (.266) was 3-for-5 with a double and three RBI. LF Ian Happ (.252) and 1B Gioskar Amaya (.266)had two hits each.

Pitching Chart: Trevor Clifton (7-10, 4.22 ERA) allowed a run over six innings, allowing three hits and two walks. He fanned three and had a game score of 63.....Dillon Maples (4.45 ERA) gave up three runs in two innings and Sam Wilson (6.62 ERA) tossed a scoreless ninth.

Northwest League—Short-Season—Eugene
Emeralds had Monday off and end the season with a six-game road trip, three each at Salem-Keizer and Hillsboro. Eugene holds a one-game lead over first-half champ Hillsboro and Salem-Keizer is three back. If Hillsboro wins both halves, the next team with the best overall record will qualify to the playoffs. Both Eugene and Salem-Keizer are 36-34.



Arizona Rookie League—Mariners 1, Cubs 1-Suspended by rain
Cubs and the Mariners only made it to the bottom of the fourth before rain halted play. The game will be resumed on Tuesday.

In the Box: Cubs scored in the second when Carlos Jimenez singled and eventually scored on an error. Cubs have runners on second and third with one out when play resumes.

Pitching Chart: Dylan Cease gave up a run in three frames, allowing a hit with two walks. A double play grounder scored the run......Carols Rodriguez worked around a pair of singles in a scoreless fourth.
