Cubs Sept. 3 Minors Recap

Eugene remained in first place while Tennessee and South Bend used seven-run innings to win their games.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Oklahoma City (Dodgers) 8, Iowa 3
Oklahoma City (85-55) beat Iowa (78-62) for the fourth straight game.

In the Box: Emilio Bonifacio went 2-for-4 and knocked in a run while Taylor Teagarden added two hits. Chris Valiaka knocked in his 39th run.

Pitching Chart: Eric Jokisch (5-4, 4.37 ERA) allowed six runs in eight hits over six innings. He gave up two homers and threw 88 pitches, 58 for strikes..... Carl Edwards Jr. worked a 1-2-3 seventh in his first game back from the DL with a callous on his finger......James Russell gave up two runs and only got two outs in the 8th. Brain Schlitter got the final out but not before one of the inherited runners scored.

I-Cubs Notes: James Russell has cleared waivers and been assigned to Iowa......Carl Edwards Jr. has been taken off the DL.....The I-Cubs head to Round Rock for the final four games of the season.

Tennessee (74-61) scored seven times in the third and took the opener at Biloxi (76-57).

In the Box: C Willson Contreras went 3-for-6 and regained the Southern League batting title race at .328. He scored twice and knocked in a run.....SS Carlos Penalver made his AA debut, going 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI.....RF Bijan Rademacher (.265) plated a pair of runs while 2B Bryant Flete (.188) had two hits and a RBI......CF Albert Almora (.272) went 0-for-5 to snap his 13-game hitting streak. Almora was named the Cubs Minor League Player of the Month for August after hitting .352/.413/.504 with 22 runs and 15 RBI.

Pitching Chart: Andres Santiago (4-5, 4.17 ERA) tossed six frames, surrounding three runs on five hits and five walks. He threw 90 pitches, 50 for streaks, and fanned three.......Corey Black (4.87 ERA) threw two shutout relief innings and Starling Peralta (2.06 ERA) pitched the ninth.

Carolina League—High A—Potomac (Nationals) 4, Myrtle Beach 2
A three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh gave Potomac (64-71) the win and the series over Myrtle Beach (78-55).

In the Box: Only five hits for the Pelicans. They took a 1-0 lead in the first on singles by 3B Chesny Young (.326), RF Mark Zagunis (.274) and 1B Benjamin Carhart (.245) to load the bases. DH Victor Caratini (.253) hit into a double play to score Young. They regained the lead in the fourth when Carhart walked and eventually scored on a wild pitch.

Pitching Chart: Duane Underwood (6-3, 2.58 ERA) held the P-Nats to one run over five innings, allowing three hits and three walks. He fanned three and had a game score of 57....Tyler Ihrig worked a scoreless sixth but surrendered a three-run homer in the 7th.....James Farris fanned two in a 1-2-3 eighth.

Pelicans News: Brad Markey (6-0, 1.31 ERA) gets the start on Friday night as Myrtle Beach heads to Wilmington for the final series of the regular season.

Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 12, Dayton (Reds) 5
South Bend (63-70) scored seven times in the first and beat Dayton (69-66).

In the Box: 2B Angelo Amendolare (.417) had two hits in the first inning and capped off the frame with a bases-clearing three-run double....Kevin Encarnacion (.276) went 2-for-4 and hit his third homer while 1B David Bote (.251) had two hits and plated two runs.....3B Jesse Hodges (.242) had two hits, scored twice and knocked in a pair....C Erick Castillo (.219) added two RBI. Cubs had nine hits and drew 13 walks, three by SS Vimael Machin (.172).

Pitching Chart: Jake Stinnett (7-6, 4.46 ERA) made his final start of 2015 and surrendered a two-run homer in the first. Stinnett gave up two more long balls in the fifth and finished with a line of 6.2 IP, 5 H, 5 ER, 1 BB, 7 K. Alex Santana closed out the game, blanking the Hot Rods on two hits with one strikeout.

SB-Cubs News: South Bend plays it final home game of the season on Friday night with Zach Hedges (7-8, 4.25 ERA) getting the start.

Northwest League—Short-Season—Eugene 5, Salem-Keizer (Giants) 1
Eugene (38-35) moved closer to a playoff berth with a win over Salem-Keizer (37-36).

In the Box: Eugene collected 13 hits in the victory, three each from P.J. Higgins and Andrew Ely. Higgins went 3-for-4 and scored twice while Ely had three singles and knocked in a pair. LF Eloy Jimenez doubled and knocked in two runs. CF Donnie Dewees was 2-for-4 and scored twice.

Pitching Chart: Ryan Kellogg (4.98 ERA) got the start and tossed three shutout frames, allowing two hits with a walk and one strikeout.....Adbert Alzolay (6-2, 2.04 ERA) continues to impress in his piggy-back appearances, fanning 10 over 5.2 innings. He allowed a solo homer, one of three hits, and walked one....Tyler Peitzmeier (5.06 ERA) fanned the final hitter of the game.

Emeralds Notes: Ems hold a one-game lead over Salem-Keizer for the wild card spot (if needed) and are up one-game for the second half title on Hillsboro. Eugene heads to Hillsboro for the final three games of the season...... Oscar De La Cruz was named Cubs Minor League Pitcher of the Month for August after posting a 3-1 record with a 2.73 ERA in 29.2 innings with 32 K and 5 BB.
