Cubs Sept. 4 Minors Recap

Brad Markey continued his dominance of the Carolina League with seven shutout innings in Myrtle Beach’s win while Eugene dropped into a first-place tie in their quest for a playoff berth. South Bend treated their fans to a win in the final home game and Iowa snapped a four-game losing skid.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 8, Round Rock (Rangers) 1
Iowa (79-62) took the opening game of the series at Round Rock (76-65) with a 13-hit attack to snap a four-game losing streak.

In the Box: 1B Chris Valaika (.261) gave the I-Cubs a 2-0 lead in the second, the first homer for Iowa in seven games and Valaika’s 7th of the season.....DH Taylor Teagarden (.312) delivered a two-run double in the 6th while 2B Arismendy Alcantara (.233) and SS Ryan Dent (.231) plated runs in the frame. C Taylor Davis (.308) and Alcantara both had three hits.

Pitching Chart: Dallas Beeler (7-5, 4.17 ERA) scattered seven hits and four walks over five innings, limiting the Express to just one run. Beeler threw 96 pitches and had a game score of 46.....Frank Batista (.5.51 ERA) worked two innings of scoreless relief and Ryan Buchter (1.45 ERA) got the final six outs.

I-Cubs Notes: Felipe Paulino (5-8, 4.82 ERA) get the start on Saturday night.

Biloxi (77-57) scored six runs in the bottom of the 8th to beat Tennessee (74-62)

In the Box: LF Jacob Hannemann (.232) led off the game with a homer and went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.....3B Jeimer Candelario (.291) went 1-for-2, walked three times and knocked in a run....SS Carlos Penalver gave the Smokies a 2-1 lead in the top of the 8th with a RBI single and is 3-for-6 in two AA games.......CF Albert Almora (.272) crashed into the outfield wall in the first and left the game, walking off the field under his own power.

Pitching Chart: Pierce Johnson (6-2, 2.15 ERA) made his final start of the year, holding the Shuckers to one run over seven innings. Johnson allowed eight hits, walked one, and recorded three punchouts in his 93-pitch outing. Game score of 59.....Neil Ramirez (4.15 ERA) got charged with two runs in the 8th, yielding a hit and a walk, throwing 22 pitches. Matt Brazis (3.29 ERA) allowed both inherited runners to score as the right-hander walked four hitters and hit a batter......Two hits off Tayler Scott (5.23 ERA) plated two more runs as Biloxi scored six times in the 8th.

Smokies News: Felix Pena (6-8, 3.89 ERA) will make his final start of the year on Saturday.

Brad Markey twirled seven shutout innings as Myrtle Beach (79-55) blanked Wilmington (60-75).

In the Box: Pelicans took a 1-0 lead in the fourth when DH Cael Brockmeyer (.230) walked and scored on a RBI single by 3B Jason Vosler (.241). They made it 2-0 in the following frame as 2B Daniel Lockhart (.224) was hit by a pitch, took second on a wild pitch, advanced to third on a groundout, and scored on a single by C Benjamin Carhart (.254). SS Gleyber Torres’ first Carolina League hit plated a pair of runs in the ninth, scoring Jeffrey Baez and Jason Vosler, who both singled.

Pitching Chart: Making his first appearance in 11 days, Brad Markey (7-0, 1.15 ERA) retired the first 12 hitters he faced and gave up a leadoff single in the fifth to break up history. The Cubs 19th round pick last year out of Virginia Tech finished the night with seven shutout innings, allowing three hits with six strikeouts. The right-hander threw 73 pitches, 56 for strikes, and had a game score of 77 in the gem......David Garner (2.45 ERA), selected to play in the Arizona Fall League earlier in the week, retired the side in order in the eighth.....Jasvir Rakkar (3.02 ERA) gave up a leadoff walk but retired the next three hitters to preserve the shutout.

Pelicans News: Jen-Ho Tseng (6-7, 3.55 ERA) and good old TBA will start the DH on Saturday.

Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 5, Dayton (Reds) 3
South Bend (64-70) closed out its 2015 home schedule with a win over Dayton (69-67).

In the Box: Cubs took a 2-1 lead in the third when CF Rashad Crawford (.280) and 2B Angelo Amendolare led off the inning with singles and came around to score on a RBI single by C Jordan Hankins and a RBI fielder’s choice from 1B David Bote (.251). South Bend added three more runs in the 7th on a sacrifice fly by Ian Happ and a two-run single from Hankins. Amendolare (.438) and Hankins (.333) both ended the game with two hits.

Pitching Chart: Zach Hedges (8-8, 4.16 ERA) earned the win, allowing a run over five innings. He gave up three hits, walked one, and fanned three. Game score 59.....Dillon Maples (4.15 ERA) fanned two in two shutout frames and Jordan Minch (4.45 ERA) made it interesting in the 9th, allowing two runs before getting the final out

SB-Cubs News: South Bend has not named a starter for Saturday as they head to Great Lakes for the final three games of the season.

Five Hillsboro (21-15) pitchers held Eugene (21-15) to three hits as the Hops moved into a first-place tie for the second half title.

In the Box: DH Ian Rice (.261) had two singles and LF Eloy Jimenez (.280) singled for the only offense of the night. Ems were just 0-for-2 with RISP.

Pitching Chart: Kyle Twomey (1-0, 1.77 ERA) made his sixth start, blanked the Hops for two frames, got the first two outs of the third before a walk and single ended his night.......Preston Morrison surrendered a two-run double to the first hitter he faced and then set down the next seven hitters. The right-hander finished with a line of 3.1 IP, 1H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3K.......Luis Hernandez (4.50 ERA) tossed a scoreless seventh and Trey Masek (3.31 ERA) worked a 1-2-3 eighth.

Emeralds Notes: Casey Bloomquist (0-1, 1.62 ERA) will get the start on Saturday night......Eugene and Salem-Keizer are tied for the wild card spot at 38-36.
