Cubs Sept. 5 Minors Recap

Jeimer Candelario homered to help Tennessee to a win while Eugene needs a win and some help to reach the playoffs on the final day of the season after dropping its second straight at Hillsboro.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Round Rock (Rangers) 4, Iowa 3
Iowa (79-63) had their chances but Round Rock (77-65) hung on for the win.

In the Box: I-Cubs collected ten hits but were just 2-for-10 with RISP and had the bases loaded in the ninth..... 2B Emilio Bonifacio (.475) and SS Chris Valaika (.266) both had three hits while CF John Andreoli (.273) and 3B Christian Villanueva (.256) both plated runs.

Pitching Chart: Felipe Paulino (5-8, 4.93 ERA) gave up two homers and four runs over five innings. He allowed four hits, walked four and fanned five in his 105-pitch outing.....The I-Cubs bullpen kept them in the game as Zac Rosscup, Carl Edwards Jr. and Armando Rivero all tossed a scoreless innings.

I-Cubs Notes: PCL Pitcher of the Year Carlos Pimentel (12-6, 2.99 ERA) makes his final start of the season on Sunday.

Felix Pena kept Biloxi (77-58) in check and Jeimer Candelario homered in the Tennessee (75-62) win.

In the Box: 3B Jeimer Candelario (.292) hit a two-run homer, his 5th, while CF Jacob Hannemann (.234) doubled, tripled and scored twice. Smokies only had five hits.....C Willson Contreras (.327) went 1-for-3 with 2 RBI and leads Chattanooga’s Max Kepler by four points for the batting title race.

Pitching Chart: Felix Pena (6-8, 3.75 ERA) twirled seven solid innings, giving up one run on four hits and a walk. Pena had a game score of 67 and fanned five in his final start of the season....Gerardo Concepcion worked 1.1 scoreless frames and Juan Paniagua gave up a homer before recording the final two outs.

Jason Vosler knocked in three runs in the opener and Wilmington held Myrtle Beach to two hits in the nightcap as the two teams split the twin-bill.

In the Box: Game 1—3B Jason Vosler went 2-for-4 and knocked in three runs while Daniel Lockhart added two hits and a RBI. Gleyber Torres delivered two singles and scored once.....Game 2—Both runs in the second game came on Benjamin Carhart’s 7th homer of the year, a two-run shot in the fourth. Chesny Young added a single.

Pitching Chart: Game 1—Jen-Ho Tseng (7-7. 3.55 ERA) held the Blue Rocks to two runs over five frames, surrendering four hits and a walk. The right-hander recorded six punchouts in the 83-pitch outing. Josh Conway (.2.92 ERA) worked two scoreless innings for his third save......Game 2—Jeremy Null (2-3, 4.70 ERA) went five innings in his final regular season start, allowing six runs on 11 hits and two walks. He fanned five and threw 82 pitches, 53 for strikes.....James Farris worked a scoreless sixth.

Midwest League—Low A— Lake County (Indians) 5, South Bend 2
Lake County (70-65) scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to beat South Bend (64-71) in the series opener.

In the Box: Jordan Hankins’ two-run single in the first scored Angelo Amendolare and Kevin Encarnacion. It was the Cubs only runs of the night. Hankins finished 2-for-4.

Pitching Chart: Erick Leal (10-8, 3.85 ERA) gave up an unearned run over six innings, allowing six hits while striking out eight...South Bend committed five errors on the night, two coming in the seventh as Daniel Lewis (0-2, 2.95 ERA) got tagged with the loss and a blown save, surrounding four unearned runs. Sam Wilson threw a scoreless eighth.

Hillsboro clinched the second-half title with its second straight win over Eugene. The Ems need a win on Sunday and a Salem-Keizer loss to reach the playoffs.

In the Box: Only three hits for Eugene as P.J. Higgins doubled and scored on a Eloy Jimenez single. Jimenez was 2-for-4.

Pitching Chart: Casey Bloomquist (0-2, 2.29 ERA) gave up two runs in three innings on three hits with two strikeouts and look the loss.....Kyle Miller worked 1.2 scoreless frames and Tyler Peitzmeier got charged with two runs in .2 innings. Scott Effross allowed an inherited runner to score in 1.2 frames while Jae-Hoon Ha tossed a scoreless eighth.

Emeralds Notes: Carson Sands (3-4, 3.98 ERA) is scheduled to start on Sunday in the season final in Hillsboro.
