Pelicans advance to finals

Victor Caratini delivered a three-run double in the first and Jonathan Martinez tossed six solid innings as Myrtle Beach beat Winston-Salem 4-3 to advance to the Carolina League championship.

Myrtle Beach won the final two games of the best-of-three series and punched their ticket to the Carolina League championship.

In the Box: C Victor Caratini’s bases-clearing double in the first gave the Pelicans a 3-0 led they never relinquished. Carolina league batting champ Chesny Young led off with a single and RF Jorge Soler followed with a double. Soler was assigned to Myrtle Beach prior to the game as part of a rehab assignment. After 3B Jason Vosler walked, Caratini cleared the bases with a double into right field. Soler finished the game 1-for-2 with a walk and left after the sixth inning......Myrtle Beach added what turned out to be the deciding run in the seventh when SS Gleyber Torres singled, stole second and scored on Chesny Young’s two-out RBI single. Pelican were held to six hits but went 2-for-6 with RISP.

Pitching Chart: Jonathan Martinez tossed six innings, allowing a two-run homer in the third. He surrendered five hits, didn’t walk anyone and fanned three in his 70-pitch outing.....David Garner allowed an unearned run in the ninth, allowing one hit over the final three innings to earn the save. The hard-throwing right-hander fanned four and threw 50 pitches, 34 for strikes.

Pelicans News: The Carolina League Championship, also known as the Mills Cup, gets under way on Sunday (5:05 P.M. EST) in Wilmington. Gem two is set for Monday and Tuesday is a day off. The final three games of the best-for-five will be played in Myrtle Beach Sept. 16-18 at Field.
