Cubs sign Cuban prospect Eddy Julio Martinez
According to Jesse Sanchez of MLB.com, the Cubs and Cuban 20-year-old outfielder Eddy Julio Martinez have agreed to a $3 million deal. The 6-foot-2, 195-pounder was considered one of the top international prospects at the start of the signing period and had been rumored to be asking over $10 million with the Dodgers the top suiters. The Giants reportedly had a deal in place with Martinez last week but that apparently fell through as the Giants offered a reported $2.5 million. A member of Cuba’s junior national team and a two-year veteran of Cuba’s Serie Nacional, Martinez shows good power to all fields and above average grades on all five tools. The Cubs have not confirmed the signing. Martinez will likely report to spring training in Mesa and could make his way all to way to Myrtle Beach by the end of his first pro season. He adds more outfield depth for the Cubs’ minors, joining Eloy Jimenez, Albert Almora, Donnie Dewees, Ian Happ, and Billy McKinney.
Arizona Fall League
Action begins on Oct, 13 with eight Cubs prospects on the roster as the Mesa Solar Sox head to Glendale for the season opener. Pitchers Corey Black, David Garner, Pierce Johnson and Rob Zastryzny, along with catchers Cael Brockmeyer and Willson Contreras; infielder Jeimer Candelario; and outfielder Mark Zagunis are the Cubs participants this season. Former Cubs minor leaguer SS Elliott Soto will play for Solar Sox as he’s now in the Marlins organization after being traded for Dan Haren along with Ivan Pineyro. A’s prospect Aaron Kurcz, drafted by the Cubs in the 10th round in 2010 and later traded to the Red Sox in 2012, will also pitch for the Solar Sox. Minor leaguers from the A’s, Marlins, Angels and Rays comprise the Mesa roster. Myrtle Beach manager Mark Johnson is at the helm for the Solar Sox.
Venezuelan Winter League
Gioskar Amaya (.250, 2-8) made his second start at second for Aragua, recording a single in three at-bats with a walk and a run scored in the 6-3 loss to La Guaria. Also turned a pair of double plays at second.....Magallanes’ Erick Leal worked a scoreless inning of relief in the 6-1 loss to Lara. The right-hander, who spent 2015 at South Bend (23 starts, 128.2 IP, 10-8, 3.85 ERA), gave up a leadoff single but then got a double play groundout and another groundnut to end the frame.
Dominican Winter League
Season starts Oct. 16.
Mexican Pacific Winter League
3B Christian Villanueva (Iowa) will suit up for Obregon after a bounce back season at the plate in AAA (.259/.313/.437, 18 HR, 88 RBI). Blake Parker is on the roster for Mexicali along with former Cub minor leaguer Walter Ibarra. Left-hander Ryan Buchter, who made 16 relief appearances for Iowa, is scheduled to pitch for Culiacan.
Puerto Rican Winter League
Season starts Oct. 30.
Sloan Park is a busy place as the Cubs are holding fall instructs as well as fielding a co-op squad with the Angels to play a schedule of games. Sixth-eight players are participating in the fall instructs including 2015 July 2 signees P Jose Albertos (Mexico), C Miguel Amaya (Panama), SS Aramis Ademan (Dominican), SS Luis Diaz (Dominican), SS Isaac Paredes (Mexico), Of/1B Kwang-Min Kwon (Korea) and OF Jonathan Sierra (Dominican). 2015 first-round pick Ian Happ is working out at second base; infielder Vimeal Machin, the Cubs 10th pick in June, is seeing time behind the plate; and C Yohan Matos (2013 International Class) is getting his feet wet in the outfield. Twenty-four of the 29 draft picks are participating in fall instructs along with 14 international position players and 15 pitchers. 2014 draft picks LHP Justin Steele, LHP Carson Sands and RHP Dylan Cease are also in Mesa.......SS Gleyber Torres and RHP Duane Underwood headline the Cubs roster for the co-op squad with the Angels along with 1B Daniel Vogelbach and IF Chesny Young.
