Cubs Oct. 14 Notebook

Arizona Fall League started play on Tuesday and five of the Cubs eight prospects saw action in the opener. Bryant Flete had another multi-hit game in the Venezuelan Winter League.

Arizona Fall League
Arizona Fall League got underway on Tuesday and the Mesa Solar Sox lost 8-7 on a walk-off, two-run single to Glendale......Pierce Johnson got the start for the Solar Sox and worked three innings, allowing three runs, two coming on a homer. The right-hander gave up three hits, walked two and fanned one in his 46-pitch outing ......Rob Zastryzny threw two innings of relief and fanned three but was also the victim of a solo homer, the only hit he allowed. Zastryzny threw 36 pitches, 20 for strikes......Corey Black only needed 12 pitches to get through the sixth as the starter turned reliever delivered a 1-2-3 inning. He fanned two and got a groundout.......Willson Contreras got the start behind the plate and was 0-for-5 with two strikeouts while RF Mark Zagunis was 0-for-2 but walked twice and scored a run......Mesa is back in action today as they host Glendale at Sloan Park.

Venezuelan Winter League
Only one game on the schedule as Magallanes beat Zulia 5-3. 2B Bryant Flete continued his torrid pace with three more hits and a run scored for Zulia. The 22-year-old is 8-for-12 in four games. Former Cub Yeiper Castillo (0-2, 3.18 ERA) got the start for Zulia and allowed five unearned runs in 1.2 innings. RH Erick Leal gave up a run on three hits in 1.1 innings for Magallanes while former Cub A.J. Morris surrendered two runs in one-third of an inning.

Mexican Pacific Winter League
3B Carlos Villanueva (.375) went 1-for-3 with a run scored and a walk in Obregon’s 8-7 loss to Mexicali. Blake Parker gave up two hits and a run in one-third of an inning for Mexicali......Ryan Buchter fanned two in scoreless inning of relief for his second hold but Los Mochis beat Culiacan 8-5.
