Cubs Oct. 15 Notebook

Jeimer Candelario made his first start in the AFL a good one as the third baseman had three hits for Mesa. Christian Villanueva had a three-hit game for Obregon in Mexico.

Arizona Fall League
3B Jeimer Candelario made the most of his first start, going 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored. The 21-year-old switch-hitter also drew a walk in Mesa’s 7-6 loss. Candelario started the year in Myrtle Beach and hit .291/.379/.462 after being promoted to Tennessee in 46 games.....Right-hander David Garner worked the ninth, striking out a pair while walking two. He threw 21 pitches, only nine for strikes.

Venezuelan Winter League
Bryant Flete (.600) went 1-for-3 and scored once as Zulia beat Aragua 10-3. Flete got the start in left field. 2B Gioskar Amaya was 0-for-4 in the loss for Aragua......Former Cub Loiger Padron earned his first save with a scoreless ninth in Caracas’ 9-8 win over La Guaria. Padron entered the game with the bases loaded and three runs already in. Joseph Ortiz, who pitched for Iowa in 2015 before being released, gave up a run and only faced one hitter in the loss.....Felipe Paulino got credit for the win in Margarita’s 10-1 victory over Caribes. He worked two innings, allowing a run on two hits with two strikeouts. Paulino spent 2015 in Iowa’s starting rotation.

Dominican Winter League
Licey and Escogido get the season started on Thursday. IF Arismendy Alcantara is on the Licey roster again this season.

Mexican Pacific Winter League
DH Christian Villanueva had three hits, including a double, and scored three times to help lead Obregon to a 5-3 win over Mexicali. Villanueva is batting .545 with two homers in four games.
