Cubs Oct. 16 Notebook

The Dominican Winter League opened play on Thursday as Arismendy Alcantara and Licey won their opener.

Cubs News
Cubs will face the Mets in the NLCS. Addison Russell will miss the series with a hamstring injury and Javier Baez will get the start at short. Baez can handle the role but the loss of Russell will hurt the Cubs bench and ability to be creative with lineup in late innings. Gonna be a great series.

Arizona Fall League
Mesa dropped to 0-3, falling to Surprise 3-0. C Willson Contreras (.125) went 1-for-3 with a walk while RF Mark Zagunis was hitless in two official at-bats but drew a walk. Contreras was charged with a throwing error but did throw out a runner attempting to steal second.

Venezuelan Winter League
Bryant Flete (.529) went 0-for-2 but did draw a walk in Zulia’s 4-1 win over Caracas. Flete started his second game in left field.....Former Cubs outfielder Rubi Silva, released during the summer from Iowa, went 2-for-4 with a RBI in Lara’s 5-2 win over Magallanes.

Dominican Winter League
Licey opened the DWL season with a 9-3 win over Escogido. 2B Arismendy Alcantara went 1-for-3 with a run scored in the victory while former Cub prospect SS Marco Hernandez had three hits and scored once. Rafael Soriano worked a scoreless ninth for Escogido. Alcantara and Hernandez are the only “Cubs” on Licey’s roster while Soriano is the lone player with Cubs ties for Escogido.

Mexican Pacific Winter League
LH Ryan Buchter got one out in the 8th, a strikeout, and surrendered a hit that allowed an inherited runner to score in Culiacan’s 7-2 loss to Los Mochis. Buchter, 28, was released by the Dodgers AAA team in late July and signed a free agent deal with the Cubs, appearing in 16 games at Iowa (2-0, 2.00 ERA, 18 IP, 9 BB, 23 K, 1.00 WHIP)......3B Christian Villanueva (.400) went 0-for-4 in Obregon’s 5-1 loss to Mexicali.
