Cubs Oct. 22 Notebook

Willson Contreras had three extra base hits, including his third homer, but Mesa lost on a walk-off homer. Cael Brockmeyer made his AFL debut and Christian Villanueva had a walk-off single in Mexico.

Arizona Fall League
Willson Contreras (.368) is picking up right where he left off as the Southern League batting champ. Serving as Mesa’s DH, the right-handed hitting Contreras went 3-for-4 that included his second homer, a two-run shot in the 8th. He also added a pair of doubles, his first two of the AFL......Cael Brockmeyer made his AFL debut and was 0-for-4 in Mesa’s 5-3 walk-off loss to Peoria. Tyler O’Neil hit a two-run homer in the 9th.....RF Mark Zagunis collected his first hit of the season, going 1-for-2 and drew two more walks to up his OBP to .533.

Venezuelan Winter League
2B Gioskar Amaya (.174) was a late replacement in Aragua’s 8-2 win over Lara. He doubled in a run and scored in his only plate appearance......Former Cub Rubi Silva went 0-for-2 for Lara and is hitting .272......Bryant Flete delivered a pinch-hit single in the 9th in Zulia’s 13-0 loss to Caracas. Flete is batting .407 in 10 games.

Dominican Winter League
2B Arismendy Alcantara was 1-for-4 with a single and a walk in Licey’s 5-4 10-inning win over Aguilas. Former Cub Marcos Hernandez, now in the Red Sox organization, had three hits and scored a run......Rafael Soriano only needed three pitches for a 1-2-3 ninth in Escogido’s 8-1 win over Toros.

Mexican Pacific Winter League
3B Christian Villanueva (.375) delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th to lift Obregon to a 2-1 win. With one out and the bases loaded, Villanueva drilled a line drive to center for the game-winner. He finished the game 2-for-4 with a walk.......Rough outing for Ryan Buchter as the left-hander allowed two runs on a hit and a walk in one-third of an inning in Culiacan’s 9-2 loss to Mexicali.. It was the first runs he’s allowed in five appearances.
