Arizona Fall League
Nov. 1—AFL takes Sundays off.
Oct. 31—Pierce Johnson fanned four over four innings but took the loss, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits and three walks in Mesa’s 6-2 loss to Scottsdale. The right-hander threw 68 pitches, 39 for strikes. Corey Black gave up a run on a pair of hits in the 7th. He fanned one in his 17-pitch outing. Mark Zagunis was 0-for-2 but walked twice while 3B Jeimer Candelario went 0-for-3 with a walk.
Oct. 30 —Rob Zastryzny (0-1, 6.43 ERA) got roughed up for four runs over three innings, including a pair of homers. Zastryzny gave up five hits and walked two in his 69-pitch outing. He fanned four in the 12-1 loss to Scottsdale. David Garner didn’t fare any better, surrendering three runs in the seventh on five hits. It was the first runs allowed by Garner in five games (6 IP). C Willson Contreras (.302) went 1-for-4.
Venezuelan Winter League
Nov. 1—OF Adron Chambers made his VWL debut, going 1-for-3 with a RBI in Magallanes’ 6-3 win over Lara. Chambers signed a minor league deal with Cubs before the start of the 2015 season. Lara’s Yoervis Medina got beat up in his VWL debut, allowing two runs on three hits and a walk in two-thirds of an inning. The Cubs acquired Medina from Seattle during the season for catcher Welington Castillo......Armando Rivero (2-0, 0.00 ERA) got the win with 1.1 innings of scoreless relief as Aragua beat Caracas 3-2. The right-hander fanned two and threw 16 pitches, 11 for strikes......2B Bryant Flete (.348) was 2-for-4 and knocked in a run in Zulia’s 5-2 win over Margarita.
Oct. 31—Not a great outing but P.J. Francescon ended up getting the win in Margarita’s 4-3 11-inning win over Zulia. Francescon allowed an inherited runner to score, giving up three hits before getting the final two outs. Bryant Flete (.333) went 2-for-4, knocked in a run, scored once and walked for Zulia.
Oct. 30 —P.J. Francescon (1-1, 2.84 ERA) earned his third save in Margarita’s 4-1 eight-inning win over Zulia in the first game of the DH. The right-hander only needed 13 pitches to get through a 1-2-3 inning, setting one hitter down on strikes. Bryant Flete went 0-for-4 in the second game, a 10-8 win by Zulia.......Yoanner Negrin (2-3, 4.56 ERA) took the loss in Lara’s 2-1 defeat to Caribes. The Cuban worked 5.1 frames, allowing two runs on three hits and four walks. He fanned two in the 83-pitch outing for a game score of 52......Erick Leal (0-0, 3.68 ERA, 7.1 IP, 10 H, 1 BB, 4K) allowed a run in 1.1 innings of relief in Magallanes’ 12-5 loss to Aragua. He threw 18 pitches, 11 for strikes, and allowed one hit.
Dominican Winter League
Nov. 1—2B Arismendy Alcantara went 0-for-3 but walked twice and knocked in two runs in Licey’s 10-7 loss to Aguilas.....Right-handed reliever Juan Paniagua got the final out in the ninth of Estrellas’ 5-0 loss to Gigantes.
Oct. 31—No Cubs prospects saw action
Oct. 30—Arismendy Alcantara hit leadoff for the first time but went 0-for-4 with a strikeout in Licey’s 4-3 win over Estrellas. Starling Peralta, who started 2015 in Myrtle Beach and made 39 relief appearances in AA, made his DWL debut for Estrellas, recording the final two outs in the ninth.
Mexican Pacific Winter League
Nov. 1—Ryan Buchter fanned the side in the ninth for his fifth save as Culiacan beat Hermosillo 2-1. Buchter walked a pair and needed 27 pitches to get through the ninth.
Oct. 31—3B Christian Villanueva homered in the first game of Obregon’s 5-3 loss to Navojoa. It was a solo shot in the sixth and Villanueva’s fifth of the season. Navojoa swept the twin-bill as Villanueva (.343) was 1-for-4 in the second game, a 6-4 loss......Ryan Buchter picked up his fourth save with a scoreless ninth in Culiacan’s 5-4 win over Hermosillo. The first two hitters reached on singles but a caught stealing at third and a double play ended the game. In 10 games, the left-hander has 14K in 9 IP with 4 BB and a .212 BAA.
Oct. 30 —DH Christian Villanueva (.350) had a pair of singles in four at-bats during Obregon’s 2-1 loss to Navojoa.
Puerto Rican Winter League
Nov. 1—In his second game in three days, Fernando Cruz tossed two shutout frames, allowing a hit and a walk. He fanned two and faced seven hitters.
Oct. 31—No Cubs prospects saw action.
Oct. 30 —Fernando Cruz tossed two scoreless frames in Santurce’s 2-0 loss to Mayaguez. Cruz walked two and fanned two, facing nine hitters......Andres Santiago got the start in the opener for Caguas and allowed four runs in four innings but didn’t figure in the decision—a 6-5 win over Carolina. The right-hander allowed seven hits, walked two and recorded three punchouts for a game score of 35.
