South Bend earns top honor
Minor League Baseball announced that the South Bend Cubs professional baseball team is the 42nd recipient of the annual John H. Johnson President's Award which will be bestowed upon South Bend representatives during the Baseball Winter Meetings on Sunday, Dec. 6, in Nashville, Tennessee. The John H. Johnson President's Award has been presented annually since 1974 to honor the complete baseball franchise. Award criteria are based on financial stability, contributions to league stability, contributions to baseball in the community and promotion of the baseball industry. South Bend was selected from the 160 minor league teams and set a single-season attendance record with 347,678 fans. Tennessee won the award in 2011 and Iowa took the honor in 2002.
Arizona Fall League
3B Jeimer Candelario was voted into the 2015 Arizona Fall League All-Star game by the fans and will play on Saturday for the East squad. The 21-year-old switch hitter is batting .341/.362/.682 with 3 HR and 11 RBI in 11 games.......C Cael Brockmeyer (.100) got the start in Mesa’s 12-6 loss to Salt River. The 23-year-old went 0-for-3 but knocked in a run on a groundout with the bases loaded in the 8th. RF Mark Zagunis (.200) was 0-for-3 and got credit for RBI with a bases-loaded walk.
Venezuelan Winter League
Adron Chambers (.545) was 1-for-2 and walked three times in Magallanes 7-5 loss to Margarita. Chambers has an OBP of .706 in four games (6 hits, 6 walks). P. J. Francescon earned his fourth save, recording the final four outs. He allowed two hits and threw 20 pitches.
Dominican Winter League
2B Arismendy Alcantara (.192) was 0-for-4 in Licey’s 2-1 win over Gigantes. Alcantara is 1-for-his-last-15.
Mexican Pacific Winter League
3B Christian Villanueva had two singles and scored once in Obregon’s 9-7 victory over Culiacan. Villanueva has a slash line of .342/.430/.582 and is one of the league’s top hitters.
Puerto Rican Winter League
No Cubs prospects saw action.
