Cubs Nov. 6-8 Notebook

Here’s a recap of the Winter League action including Erick Leal’s first win in the VWL.

Arizona Fall League
Nov. 8—No games scheduled.

Nov. 7—All-Star Game—Jeimer Candelario doubled home a run in the East’s 8-3 loss. Candelario had two at-bats after replacing Renato Nunez at third in top of the sixth.......RHP Corey Black surrendered a two-run homer and got charged with three earned runs in the 8th. Black gave up three hits, walked one and fanned one in the 23-pitch outing.

Nov. 6—Pierce Johnson didn’t make it out of the first innings, leaving after 35 pitches and seven hitters. Johnson surrendered a pair of homers and walked three before departing after only getting two outs. David Garner got the final out of the first and worked a scoreless second, allowing two hits and throwing 29 pitches.......Mark Zagunis (.273) went 3-for-3, walked twice, scored a run, and stole a base. Zagunis has a OBP of .520 in 12 games......C Cael Brockmeyer will see more playing time now that Willson Contreras will miss the remainder of the AFL season with a strained hamstring. Brockmeyer, who played at all four full-season levels in ’15, went 1-for-4 and drove in a run in Mesa’s 7-6 loss.



Venezuelan Winter League
Nov. 8—Gioskar Amaya grounded into a double play in his only plate appearance in Aragua’s 5-4 loss to Magallanes. Erick Leal, Magallanes, earned his second hold, retiring the only hitter he faced to end the 8th.

Nov. 7—Erick Leal earned his first win with two scoreless innings of relief in Magallanes’ 6-5 win over Aragua. The right-hander allowed one hit and threw 19 pitches, 14 for strikes. Armando Rivero (2-2, 8.44 ERA) got charged with his second blown save and tool the loss, allowing three runs in the 8th of three hits......Yoervis Medina gave up three hits over 1.1 innings but kept Margarita off the board in Lara’s 5-4 loss. P. J. Francescon got charged with his second blown save, allowing two inherited runners to score for Lara. Francescon allowed three hits and walked two in 1.1 innings.

Nov. 6—CF Adron Chambers (.647) helped fuel Magallanes 8-4 win over Caracas, going 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored......2B Bryant Flete (.296) was 0-for-3 in Zulia’s 7-3 loss to Aragua.



Dominican Winter League
Nov. 8—No Cubs prospects saw action as two of the three games were rained out.

Nov. 7—Saturday’s games were all rained out.

Nov. 6—Carlos Pimentel pitched in his second game, tossing 1.1 innings of relief in Escogido’s 3-0 loss to Gigantes. The right-hander stranded two inherited runners in the third and tossed a scoreless fourth. He fanned two and walked one......Arismendy Alcantara was a pinch runner in the 9th in Licey’s 9-5 10 innings win and popped out in the 10th.



Mexican Pacific Winter League
Nov. 8—3B Christian Villanueva (.344) went 2-for-3 in Obregon’s 3-1 win over Hermosillo.

Nov. 7—3B Christian Villanueva singled in three at-bats in Obregon’s 5-2 loss to Hermosillo.

Nov. 6—Ryan Buchter collected his sixth save, striking out two in the a scoreless ninth in Culiacan’s 7-5 win over Mazatlan....3B Christian Villanueva was 1-for-5 with a RBI and a run scored in Obregon’s 5-3 win over Hermosillo.



Puerto Rican Winter League
Nov. 8—No Cubs prospects saw action.

Nov. 7—Fernando Cruz extended his scoreless streak to eight innings with three more shutout frames. The right-hander fanned three and only allowed one hit in Santurce’s 3-2 13-inning loss.

Nov. 6—No Cubs prospects saw action.
