Minor League camp opens

Cubs minor league camp officially opened on Sunday and numerous Cubs' minor leaguers saw action in the spring training game against the

Newcomers day on the mound

Several pitchers saw their first action in a Cubs uniform during the 8-3 loss to Arizona. Adam Warren, acquired from the Yankees for Starlin Castro, got the start and allowed two runs in the first and pitched a scoreless second. He threw 32 pitches and finished with a line of 2 IP, 3H 2 ER, 0 BB, 0 K. Spencer Patton, another pitcher acquired via trade, worked a 1-2-3 third with two punchouts while Rex Brothers threw 29 pitches and didn’t get out of the fourth, allowing two runs on two hits with two strikeouts. Brothers, acquired from the Rockies for pitcher Wander Cabrera, threw four wild pitches in the outing.

Nick Greenwood signed as a free agent after pitching in the Cardinals system, got the final out of the 4th.....Left-hander Scott Barnes made his Cubs debut, getting the final out of the fifth but allowed an inherited runner to score on a single. Barnes, signed as a free agent, fanned one....... Miguel Mejia who’s never pitched above A ball and out of states for the past five seasons, made his debut and looked good, consistently throwing his fastball at 94-95 while working a 1-2-3 7th. The 27-year-old saw limited action last year in Japan........ C.J. Riefenhauser, claimed off waivers before the start of spring training from the Orioles, surrendered a solo homer in the 8th and got out of a jam after a pair of two-out singles.

Frank Batista, in his 8th season with the Cubs, all in the minors, made his spring debut but left the game after suffering a leg injury. Batista got charged with an unearned run in two-thirds of an inning......Michael Jensen, who spent all of ’15 in the Tennessee bullpen, got charged with two runs in the sixth, allowing two hits and a walk.......Other minor leaguers seeing action were LF Anthony Giansanti (0-1), CF Albert Almora (1-2), C Willson Contreras (0-1, BB), DH Dan Vogelbach (0-3, 2 K), DH Cael Brockmeyer (0-1), 3B Taylor Davis (0-2), and RF John Andreoli (0-1).

Minor League camp begins

While many of the Cubs minor leaguers have been in Arizona for a few weeks, the official start of the minor league training camp was Sunday. Here’s an unofficial list of the players in camp. This is just a list and in no means a reflection of where they will begin the season, that announcement will be made a few days before the start of the season. The more free agents that remain on Iowa’s roster, the less movement from below, so several players may start the year in the league they finished in.

MLB.com’s Carrie Muskat reported one of the best stories this spring as Cubs pitching prospect Jose Zapata is now a coach. Zapata, 22, was involved in the two-car accident with other Cubs prospects in the Dominican Republic in January of 2014. Zapata broke his neck and after doctors told him he may not walk again, attempted a comeback but shoulder pain ended his career. According to Muskat, Zapata will work with pitchers in Mesa during extended spring training and during the Arizona Rookie League season.
