Daily look at the Cubs and their minors

Cubs lost to Kansas City and Colorado on Monday but the “kids” saw plenty of action

Cubs drop pair

The Cubs lost 3-2 to the Royals and fell 4-2 to the Rockies in split-squad action on Monday in Arizona. Against the Royals, Carl Edwards Jr. and Felix Pena both pitched in their second game this spring. Edwards worked a scoreless frame and hit a batter while Pena retired all three hitters he faced...... Right-hander Michael Wagner made his debut and gave up a RBI single to the only hitter he faced as the inning ended when Willson Contreras threw out a base stealer. Wagner, the Cubs 15th round pick in 2013, was Kris Bryant’s college roommate and pitched at South Bend (50.1 IP), Tennessee (10.2 IP) and Iowa (14.1 IP) in 28 games......Minor leaguers seeing action off the bench included 3B Jeimer Candelario (0-2), 2B Stephen Bruno (0-1), RF Kelly Dugan (0-1), C Willson Contreras (0-1, BB), DH Daniel Vogelbach (1-3, R, BB), SS Logan Watkins(0-1). Dugan signed a free agent deal after seven minor league seasons with the Phillies.

Against the Rockies, Cubs only runs came on solo homers from Anthony Rizzo and Jason Heyward. 1B Matt Rose, a 2015 draft pick, played in his first spring training game, striking out in his only plate appearance. Other minor leaguers seeing action include LF Mike O’Neill (0-2), C Tim Federowicz (1-2), 3B Jason Vosler (0-0, BB), SS Gleyber Torres (1-1), RF Mark Zagunis (0-1), 2B Anthony Giansanti (0-1), DH Taylor Davis (0-3), CF John Andreoli (0-1).

Injury round-up

Cubs haven’t been without their share of injuries this spring. They’ve already placed left-handed reliever Zac Rosscup Rosscup on the 60-day DL with shoulder inflammation and 3B Christian Villanueva will miss at least two months with a broken leg. OF Matt Szczur has been dealing with a slight oblique strain and OF Matt Murton had emergency appendectomy surgery and is expected to return to action soon. Yesterday, 2B Tommy La Stella left the Royals game after the first inning with right calf soreness.

Both Rosscup and Villanueva are out of options and the injuries likely mark an end to their Cubs career, unless they pass through waivers after returning from their injuries. Szczur, also out of options, is in a battle for the fifth outfield spot with Shane Victorino, Matt Murton, Ryan Kalish and Juan Perez.

Nice to see RHP Jose Rosario and C Will Remillard on the spring training rosters as both prospects missed 2015 with Tommy John surgery. Rosario opened eyes with a good moving fastball in the mid-90s before surgery and Remillard was considered one of the better defensive backstops in the organization. RHP Frank Batista suffered a leg injury in a Cubs spring training game and had to leave the game. No update has been given.
