Daily look around the Cubs minors

A trade, a crazy game, graduation, and a promo schedule highlight today’s notebook

Cubs trade Olmos

The Cubs sent left-handed relief pitcher Edgar Olmos to the Orioles for a player to be named later. Olmos appeared in four games for the Cubs this spring, allowing three runs on four hits in 3.1 innings as a non-roster invite. Quite an adventurous  off-season for Olmos as he was designated for assignment by the Mariners in December and claimed off waivers by the Cubs. Chicago tried to clear Olmos through waivers but the Orioles put in an claim. After the Orioles tried the same maneuver, the Cubs claimed Olmos and he finally cleared waivers, getting outrighted to Iowa. And after all that maneuvering, the 25-year-old was traded back to the Orioles on Thursday.

Candelario goes deep

In what could be described as one of the worst spring training games I’ve ever watched, the Cubs beat the Giant 16-14. Lots of drama in this one from the blister on Jake Arrieta’s hand to “sign stealing” allegations. 3B Jeimer Candelario smacked his third homer of the spring and added a RBI single in five at-bats. Albert Almora doubled, singled, and scored twice in his two plate appearances while right-hander Starling Peralta retired the side in order in the ninth for his first save.

Amaya, Balaguert graduate

Cubs prospects Gioskar Amaya and Yasiel Balaguert were honored on Thursday for graduating from the organization’s English program. They received their diplomas wearing the Cubbie blue cap and gown, complete with logo. Amaya, 23 signed as a free agent out of Venezuela in back in 2010 and started his career as a second baseman but moved to catcher last year. Balaguert, 23  signed out of Cuba in 2012 and has spent four seasons in the minors as an outfielder/first baseman, not playing above low A.
