Pacific Coast League—AAA—Round Rock 9, Iowa 3
Round Rock feasted on Iowa starting pitching for the third straight game.
Hitting Recap: Iowa scored all their run in the 8th while trailing 9-0. RF Ryan Kalish was 2-for-4 and knocked in two runs while 1B Daniel Vogelbach singled in the other run. LF John Andreoli had two hits and scored a run while C Willson Contreras was 1-for-4.
Pitching Chart: For the third straight game, Round Rock roughed up the Iowa starter, scoring eight runs on 11 hits off Eric Jokisch. The left-hander allowed two homers and walked two.... Armando Rivero gave up a run over 1.2 frames while Scott Barnes, Carl Edwards, Jr. and Miguel Mejia all tossed a scoreless inning.
I-Cubs Notes: Drew Rucinski makes his Cubs debut after spending last year with the Angels. Signed as a free agent during the off-season, Rucinski appeared in four games for the Angles last year but spent most of the year in AAA (5-7, 5.69 ERA, 22 starts).
Southern League—AA—Tennessee 1, Mobile 0
Four Smokies pitcher combined for the shutout and Jeimer Candelario delivered the game-winning single.
Hitting Recap: Smokies scored the only run they needed in the bottom of the sixth when Bijan Rademacher reached on a one-out single, took second on Chesny Young’s bunt single and scored on Jeimer Candelario’s single to center. Tennessee only had six hits in the win, two from DH David Freitas, who made his Cubs debut. Young finished 2-for-3.
Pitching Chart: It was your typical Brad Markey outing—five innings, no runs, and eight ground ball outs. The right-hander kept the BayBears off balance, holding them to three hits and a walk while fanning four in the 77-pitch outing......Gerardo Concepcion got the win in relief, retiring all six hitters he faced, three on strikes. Josh Conway worked around a walk and a hit in the 8th and Juan Paniagua nailed down the win with a 1-2-3 ninth, striking out two hitters, for the save.
Smokies News: Tyler Skulina, who made 15 starts last year in Myrtle Beach (3-6, 3.09 ERA), makes his AA debut on Sunday. The Smokies face former Cubs prospect Zach Godley, who made his major league debut tast year with the D-Backs.
Carolina League—High A—Frederick 6, Myrtle Beach 0
Frederick held the Pelicans to just six hits in the shutout win.
Pitching Chart: Trevor Clifton’s Carolina League debut ran into problems in the first as the right-hander gave up a two-run homer and threw a wild pitch that allowed another run to score. Clifton needed 74 pitches to get through three innings and was charged five runs on four hits and four walks......James Farris fanned four in his three innings of relief, yielding one run on three hits..... James Pugliese tossed two shutout frames with 4 K and David Berg threw a 1-2-3 ninth.
Pelicans News: Erick Leal gets the start in the series finale on Sunday afternoon in Myrtle Beach. In his fifth season with the Cubs, the 21-year-old right-hander led South Bend with 23 starts last year and was 10-8 with a 3.85 ERA......Outfielders Rashad Crawford and Shawon Dunston collided in the first inning and Crawford had to leave the game. No update on his condition although he walked off under his own power.....Myrtle Beach placed Dillon Maples on the DL and RHP Jose Rosario, 25, who missed 2015 with Tommy John surgery, has joined the Pelicans.
Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 5, West Michigan 3
South Bend won their first game of the year as the offense had 12 hits and Ryan Kellogg had a strong debut.
Hitting Recap: Cubs had 12 hits, drew six walks, and scored three times in the sixth for the win. Leadoff hitter CF Donnie Dewees went 2-for-4 with a triple and scored on a pop out to the second baseman. He also stole his first base of the year and was picked off.....RF Daniel Spingola made his first start and went 2-for-4 with a triple and a RBI....C P.J. Higgins had two hits, drew two walks, and plated a run with a RBI double.....DH Eddy Martinez had two hits and scored twice while 1B Tyler Alamo made his MWL debut, going 1-for-5 with a run scored and a RBI.
Pitching Chart: Ryan Kellogg made his MWL debut a good one, limiting the Whitecaps to just one unearned run over five innings The lefty threw 79 pitches in the outing, fanning three while issuing five hits and no walks. Greyfer Eregua was perfect in his 2.2 innings of relief, retiring all eight hitters he faced, two on strikes. Scott Effross got the final out of the 8th but ran into problems in the ninth, allowing two runs on two hits and a walk. Michael Wagner got his first save by recording the final two outs but Donnie Dewees should get the save with his diving catch to take away a game-tying double and end the game.
SB-Cubs News: Adbert Alzolay makes his MWL debut on Monday back at Four Winds Field against Bowling Green. The 21-year-old went 6-2 with a 2.04 ERA in 12 games last year in Eugene with 49 K in 53 IP and a 0.83 WHIP.
