Round Rock completed the sweep with a seven-run eighth.
Hitting Recap: Cubs didn’t get on the board until the 8th when Daniel Vogelbach delivered a two-run single, scoring Logan Watkins and Arismendy Alcantara. John Andreoli added a two-run single in the 9th. Kris Negron had two singles and scored a run. C Willson Contreras we 1-for-3 with a double.
Pitching Chart: Drew Rucinski made his Cubs debut and got charged with three runs on five hits and a walk in six innings. Rucinski threw 87 pitches and fanned six. Brandon Gomes tossed a scoreless seventh. C. J. Riefenhauser only got one out in the 8th, allowing six runs on four hits and two walks. Jean Machi allowed two inherited runners to score and got charged with another run before getting the final two outs of the inning. Spencer Patton struckout the side in the ninth.
I-Cubs Notes: New Orleans comes to town for a four-game series and the I-Cubs will face former farmhand Ivan Pineyro in the opener on Monday night. Pineyro was acquired from the Nationals in 2013 for Scott Hairston and after pitching for Daytona (’13) and Tennessee (’14-’15) was traded to Miami for Dan Haren last summer.
Southern League—AA—Mobile 4, Tennessee 1
Zac Godley blanked his former organization for six plus innings as Mobile took the series finale.
Hitting Recap: Only four hits for the Smokies and they scored their only run in the 8th on a throwing error. Chesny Young went 1-for-4 and David Frets qas 1-2 with a run scored and a walk.
Pitching Chart: Tyler Skulina’s AA debut was a success but he took the loss, allowing a run over six innings. Skulina allowed four hits, one a solo homer, and fanned three in his 78-pitch outing. RH Starling Peralta was charged with three runs in two innings of relief and RH David Garner fanned the side in the ninth.
Smokies News: Jen-Ho Tseng, the Cubs 2014 Minor League Pitcher of the Year, makes his AA debut on Monday morning at Smokies Stadium. After going 6-1 with a 2.40 ERA in his debut season at Kane County in ’14, Tseng, a native of Taiwan, was 7-7 with a 3.55 ERA in 22 starts last year in Myrtle Beach.
Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 7, Frederick 5
Shawon Dunston’s three-run triple gave the Pelicans the lead for good and a split of the four-game series with Frederick.
Hitting Recap: Trailing 3-0 after a three-run homer in the top of the 4th, Myrtle Beach answered back with four runs in the bottom half. C Cael Brockmeyer drew a bases loaded walk and then Dunston cleared the bases with a triple down the right-field line. The middle of the order produced three more runs in the 7th, which proved to be the difference. CF Charcer Burks led off with a walk and 2B Ian Happ tripled him home. 1B Yasiel Balaguert collected his third hit of the game, plating Happ, and then scored his second run of the day on a 3B Jason Vosler double. Dunston finished the game 2-for-4. Gleyber Torres is off to a rough start as the Cubs #1 rated prospect fanned four times and is hitting .133 with nine strikeouts in 15 at-bats.
Pitching Chart: Erick Leal had a solid High A debut, limiting the Keys to five hits over five innings. The only blemish was a three-run homer in the third. He threw 83 pitches, walked two and fanned two in the win. Jordan Minch fired two shutout frames, striking out a pair while walking two and allowing two hits. Daury Torrez was one strike away from his first pro save but a hit and two walks loaded the bases in the ninth.He went 1.2 innings, and gave up two runs in the 8th. Making his first appearance in two years with the bases loaded and two out, Jose Rosario got a fly out to right to end the game for the save.
Pelicans News: Jake Stinnett, the Cubs second-round pick out of Maryland in 2014, makes his Carolina League debut on Monday night when the Pelicans host Winston-Salem (White Sox) for the first of a three-game set......According to Pelicans play-by-play announcer John Vittas, Rashad Crawford worked out before the Sunday’s game but no decision has been made on his status. Crawford left Saturday night’s game after colliding with Dunston on a ball hit to the outfield.
Midwest League—Low A—South Bend @ West Michigan—Postponed
Sunday’s game at West Michigan was postponed due to snow in the Grand Rapids area and will be made up as a DH on June 4 in South Bend. Adbert Alzolay makes his MWL debut on Monday back at Four Winds Field against Bowling Green. The 21-year-old went 6-2 with a 2.04 ERA in 12 games last year in Eugene with 49 K in 53 IP and a 0.83 WHIP.
Cubs sign Buchanan
The Cubs signed right-handed pitcher Jake Buchanan to a minor league deal and assigned the 26-year-old to extended spring training. A five-year veteran of the Astros system, including two seasons in the big leagues, the former 8th round pick was released at the end of spring training. Buchanan appeared in 17 games in 2014 for the Astros, including two starts, but was 1-3 with a 4.58 ERA and a 1.50 WHIP in 35.1 innings. Buchanan spent most of his minor league career as a starter.
