South Bend won on a walk-off for the second straight night against Bowling Green

Pacific Coast League—AAA—New Orleans 4, Iowa 2

The Zephyrs out-hit the I-Cubs 11-5 and evened the series.

Hitting Recap: I-Cubs were held to five hits, one a solo homer from SS Kris Negron. C Willson Contrerascontinued his hot hitting, going 2-for-4 to up his average to .478 and extended his hit streak to six games. CF Albert Almora knocked in a run with a sacrifice fly.

Pitching Chart: Ryan Williams allowed a run over six innings in his second start after surrendering six runs in the AAA debut. The right-hander fanned three, walked one, recorded seven ground ball outs in the 84-pitch outing. LH Scott Barnes gave up a two runs, including a solo homer, in 1.2 innings and took the loss. RH Jean Machi yielded an unearned run in 1.1 frames and LH C.J. Riefenhauser worked a scoreless ninth.

I-Cubs Notes: Stephen Fife (0-1, 12.00 ERA) gets the ball for the matinee on Wednesday at Principal Park against New Orleans.....The Cubs acquired LHP Giovanni Soto from Cleveland for cash considerations and optioned him to Iowa. To make room on the 40-man roster, the Cubs moved Kyle Schwarber to the 60-day DL. Soto made his MLB this year for the Indians, allowing three hits in 3.1 innings in six relief appearances. He was signed by the Tigers in ’09 and then traded to Cleveland for Jhonny Peralta in 2010.

Southern League—AA—Birmingham 5, Tennessee 4

A walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth gave the Barons (2-4) the win over Tennessee (2-4).

Hitting Recap: Ryan Dent went 3-for-4 with a run scored to lead the offense. CF Jacob Hannemann ripped a two-run double and Taylor Davis added a RBI triple in the Smokies three-run fifth. RF Billy McKinney was 1-for-3 with a run scored and a walk.

Pitching Chart: Rob Zastryzny worked five innings, allowing four runs on eight hits and walk. The lefty fanned four and threw 90 pitches, 56 for strikes. Gerardo Concepcion tossed three no-hit frames, issuing only a walk with a strikeout. Juan Paniagua only got one out in the ninth as a single, two wild pitches, two walks and another single ended the game.

Smokies News: Paul Blackburn (0-0 1.80 ERA) makes his second AA start Wednesday in Birmingham.

Carolina League—High A—Winston-Salem 4, Myrtle Beach 3

The Dash (2-4) scored four times in the third and hung on for the win over the Pelicans (3-3). 

Hitting Recap: Rashad Crawford answered all questions about his health after colliding with Shawon Dunston over the weekend and leaving the game in the first inning. The center fielder smacked his first Carolina Leaguer homer and finished 3-for-5 with a double and two runs scored. Ian Happ was 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI. Gleyber Torres (.083) went 0-for-5 with a strikeout.

Pitching Chart: Tommy Thorpe tossed four shutout innings but the Dash scored four times off the left-hander in the third. In the third, Thorpe surrendered a lead-off homer, a double, a single, a triple, a sac fly and a wild pitch that scored a run. He fanned four in the 79-pitch outing, his first appearance of ’16. James Farris was perfect, retiring all nine of the hitters he faced, four on strikes, in his second relief outing. Jose Rosario worked a scoreless ninth.

Pelicans News: Jonathan Martinez (1-0, 1.80 ERA) takes the mound in the series final on Wednesday night.

Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 3, Bowling Green 2

Eddy Martinez was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the bottom of the tenth to give South Bend their second straight walk-off win over Bowling Green.

Hitting Recap: The SB-Cubs drew three walks in the bottom of the tenth to load the bases and then Eddy Martinez was hit by a pitch for the walk-off win.  Eloy Jimenez had a career-high four hits, including a double and a RBI, to go along with two stolen bases. Donnie Dewees continues to excel in the leadoff spot as he was on base three times with two hits and a walk. Dewees scored twice and stole his first base.

Pitching Chart: Bowling Green collected three of their four hits off Carson Sands in the first, scoring twice in the left-hander’s MWL debut. Sands fanned four over five frames and walked one in his 86-pitch outing. Kyle Twomey  tossed two shutout frames with two punchouts in his second relief appearance of the season. Twomey fanned seven and allowed a run in four innings of relief on opening night against West Michigan. He leads the South Bend staff with nine strikeouts. RH Scott Frazier worked a 1-2-3 eighth and Casey Bloomquist earned his first career win with two scoreless frames. 

SB-Cubs News: The Cubs have placed 2B Carlos Sepulveda on the DL and 2B Sutton Whiting had been assigned to South Bend from Iowa. Whiting started the year at extended spring training......C Will Remillard was moved to the 60-day DL. Remillard missed last year with Tommy John surgery.
