A recap of the April 13 Cubs minor league games

Donnie Dewees knocked in three runs to lead South Bend to a sweep while Bijan Rademacher plated four runs in the Smokies victory.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 9, New Orleans 5

Iowa (2-5) jumped out to a 8-0 lead and won their second game of the season over the Zephyrs (3-4).

Hitting Recap: After missing last year with an Achilles injury, Logan Watkins had his best game since the injury, with four hits, three RBI, and a stolen base. Watkins doubled and brought his average up to .278. Juan Perez had his best game in Iowa, going 3-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI. Daniel Vogelbach was 1-for-3 with two runs and Javier Baez got the start at short and was 1-for-4 with a run scored. Arismendy Alcantara hit his first homer while Albert Almora went 1-for-3 with three runs scored. Willson Contreras had the day off. 

Pitching Chart: Stephen Fife kept the Zephyrs off the board into the fifth but left the game with an injury. Fife worked 4.1 innings, allowing two hits and a walk with two strikeouts in the 56-pitch outing. Miguel Mejia allowed three runs on four hits, including a pair of homers, in his inning, but got credit for the win. Armando Rivero fanned two in 1.2 scoreless frames. Carl Edwards, Jr. got touched up for two runs on two hits and two free passes in the 8th and Spencer Patton worked a scoreless ninth.

I-Cubs Notes: Eric Jokisch (0-1, 16.62 ERA) gets the start in the final game of the series at 12:08 p.m. 

Southern League—AA—Tennessee 7, Birmingham 3

Bijan Rademacher knocked in four runs, including a three-run homer, as the Smokies even the series with Birmingham. 

Hitting Recap: Rademacher was 3-for-5 with a three-run homer in the fourth off the White Sox top pick Carson Fuller. He added a RBI single, scored twice, and is hitting .529/.529/.941 in six games. 3B Jeimer Candelario has gotten off to a slow start but was 3-for-4 with a run scored to up his average to .231. 1B Taylor Davis, LF Anthony Giansanti and SS Carlos Penalver all had two hits.

Pitching Chart: Paul Blackburn won his first AA game, blanking the Barons over six innings. He allowed four hits, walked one, and fanned six in the 88-pitch outing. Blackburn lowered his ERA to 0.82 and recorded seven ground ball outs. David Garner fanned four in 1.1 innings of scoreless relief. Andury Acevedo walked five in 1.1 innings and got charged with three runs. Starling Peralta got the final out to earn his first save.

Smokies News: Brad Markey makes his second AA start on Wednesday night against the Barons.

Carolina League—High A—Winston-Salem 4, Myrtle Beach 2

The Dash (3-4) scored twice in the top of the ninth to beat the Pelicans (3-4). 

Hitting Recap: Pelican scored both of their runs in the third on RBI singles by Ian Happ (.296) and Jason Vosler (.190) Rashad Crawford (.381) and Shawon Dunston (.294) were both 1-for-4 with a double, a run scored, and a walk. Gleyber Torres had the night off.

Pitching Chart: The Dash scored twice in the first off Jonathan Martinez but that would be all they would get off the right-hander. Martinez yielded five hits and a walk in seven innings with five strikeouts. He only needed 70 pitches and got nine ground ball outs. James Pugliese worked a scoreless 8th but gave up two runs in the 9th on three straight hits, the last a two-run triple.

Pelicans News: Zach Hedges (0-1, 5.06 ERA) makes the start on Thursday night as the Pelicans open a four-game series at Carolina.

Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 6, Bowling Green 5

Donnie Dewees had three hits and knocked in three runs to lead South Bend (4-2) to a sweep over the Hot Rods (3-4).

Hitting Recap: Donnie Dewees ripped a RBI single in the third and added a two run double in the fourth. He finished the game 3-for-4 and is hitting .440/.464/.680 over the first six games. Making his first start since joining the SB-Cubs, Sutton Whiting went 2-for-4 with a RBI while Tyler Alamo had two hits, scored once and added a RBI. Eddy Martinez (.292) was 1-for-4 and Eloy Jimenez (.292) went 0-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.

Pitching Chart: Preston Morrison threw a career-high six innings and won fir the first time in the MWL. The right-hander allowed two runs in the second but that was it. He fanned six, walked four and threw 97 pitches, also a career-high. James Norwood fanned two in a scoreless 7th but didn’t get out of the 8th, surrendering three runs after two outs. Greyfer Eregua got out of the jam in the 8th and worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his first save. 

SB-Cubs News: Justin Steele (0-1, 0.00 ERA) takes the mound on Thursday night as the Cubs head to Fort Wayne.
