A recap of the April 14 Cubs minor league games

Iowa beat New Orleans for the third time but its was a rough night for the rest of the affiliates.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 4, New Orleans 2

Iowa (3-5) broke a tie with a two-run sixth and beat the Zephyrs (3-5) for the third time in four games. 

Hitting Recap: I-Cubs tied the game at 1-1 in the second on Kris Negron's RBI double, plating Willson Contreras, who extended his hit streak to seven games with a single. Daniel Vogelbach (.407) had two hits, including a RBI single in the 6th. CF Albert Almora (.286) collected a pair of singles and knocked in a run the 6th. Javier Baez played left and third, and went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base. 

Pitching Chart: LH Tyler Ihrig arrived in town to make a spot start and went four innings in his 2016 debut, allowing a run on three hits and a walk. He fanned three and threw 64 pitches. The 23rd-round pick in 2013 made a start for Iowa last year. Brandon Gomes fanned four in two no-hit frames (he did walk 2) to earn his first win with the Cubs. Jean Machi worked around two hits and a walk in the seventh and Felix Pena surrendered a solo homer in the 8th. Spencer Patton tossed a scoreless ninth for his first save.

I-Cubs Notes: Eric Jokisch’s six-plus years with the Cubs organization came to an end on Thursday when the Marlins claimed the left-hander off waivers. A member of the Cubs 40-man roster, Jokisch was put on waivers by the Cubs after making one start in AAA Iowa. He was the Cubs 11th round pick in 2010 out of Northwestern. Jokisch made his MLB debut in 2014, tossing 14.1 innings (1.88 ERA) in four games, including one start. The Marlins optioned Jokisch to AAA New Orleans. LHP Tyler Ihrig was sent to Iowa from Myrtle Beach to replace Jokisch on the roster...... Munenori Kawasaki has been optioned to Iowa to make room on the 25-man roster for Javier Baez, who was activated from the DL...... Drew Rucinski (0-1, 4.50 ERA) gets the start on Friday night as the I-Cubs head to Rock Round for some revenge after the Express swept Iowa in the opening series.

Southern League—AA—Birmingham 5, Tennessee 3

Birmingham (3-5) tied the game in the 7th and added two more runs in the 8th to down Tennessee (3-5).

Hitting Recap: Only five hits for the Smokies. 1B David Freitas (.444) delivered a RBI single in the second and knocked in a run with a ground out in the fourth. C Taylor Davis (.333) plated the other run on a fielder’s choice. 3B Jeimer Candelario (.233) doubled for the Smokies only extra base hit. LF Mark Zagunis (.316) was 1-for-3 with two runs scored.

Pitching Chart: Brad Markey lasted five innings in his second AA start, allowing two runs on five hits and a walk. He surrendered a homer, fanned one, and threw 83 pitches. Corey Black got charged with a blown save, surrendering the tying run in the seventh, his second inning. Josh Conway (0-1, 6.00 ERA) took the loss, yielding two runs in the 8th on a hit and three walks.

Smokies News: Tyler Skulina (0-1, 1.50) makes his second start on Friday night in Birmingham.

Carolina League—High A—Carolina 3, Myrtle Beach 2

The Mudcats (5-3) took a 3-0 lead after two innings and hung on to down the Pelicans (3-5).

Hitting Recap: An RBI triple from 3B Jason Vosler followed by a single from Jeffrey Baez plated both Pelicans runs in the 4th after two outs. Vosler ripped a double in the second but Gleyber Torress fell rounding third and was tagged out. Baez finished 2-for-4 and Ian Happ was 0-for-4 with four strikeouts. Torres finished 1-for-4 with a walk.

Pitching Chart: Zach Hedges (0-2, 3.00 ERA) pitched into the seventh, allowing three runs (one earned) on seven hits and three walks. He fanned one and threw 87 pitches.  Daury Torrez got the final four outs in relief, two on strikes.

Pelicans News: Trevor Clifton (0-1, 9.00 ERA) makes his second start at Carolina.

Midwest League—Low A—Fort Wayne 10, South Bend 2

Fort Wayne (5-3) had a 8-0 lead after two innings and won easily over the SB-Cubs (4-3).

Hitting Recap: Donnie Dewees upped his slash to .464/.500/.821 with a pair of triples and two runs scored. Dewees also walked and has multi-hit games in six of the seven he has played. Tyler Alamo went 2-for-3 and P.J. Higgins singled in three at-bats. Brant Flete knocked in both runs but was 0-for-4.

Pitching Chart: Justin Steele (0-2, 12.71 ERA), only lasted two innings, surrendering eight runs on seven hits and two walks. He threw 58 pitches, only 28 for strikes, and fanned three. Scott Effross allowed a run in three innings and Craig Brooks gave up a run in two frames. Scott Frazier worked a scoreless 8th.

SB-Cubs News: Ryan Kellogg (1-0, 0.00 ERA) is the scheduled starter in the second game at Fort Wayne.
