A recap of the April 15 Cubs minor league games

Tyler Skulina won his first AA games as Tennessee evened the series with Birmingham. Daniel Vogelbach homered for Iowa in a loss.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Round Rock 8, Iowa 6

Round Rock (6-3) made it five straight over Iowa (3-6). 

Hitting Recap: 1B Daniel Vogelbach (.387) smacked a three-run homer and Munenori Kawasaki knocked in three runs in his first game back in Iowa. C Willson Contreras had his seven-game hitting streak snapped, going 0-for-3 with a walk and run scored. DH Ryan Kalish (.273) was on base four times with two hits and two walks, scoring twice.

Pitching Chart: Drew Rucinski (0-2, 8.71 ERA) gave up seven runs in 4.1 innings on five hits and four walks. He fanned four in the 96-pitch outing. Stephen Perakslis made his season and AAA debut after being assigned to Iowa. The right-hander missed most of last season with an injury. The hard-throwing reliever allowed a run on two hits and a walk over 2.1 innings with one strikeout. C.J. Riefenhauser got the final out of the seventh and Armando Rivero worked a scoreless eighth.

I-Cubs Notes: Pierce Johnson was scheduled to make his second start Saturday night against Round Rock but instead was placed on the 7-day DL with a forearm bruise. Johnson was hit by a batted ball in his last start but stayed in the game after getting hit. A starter has not been named for Saturday night’s game at Round Rock.....Johnson and Stephen Fife were both placed on the DL while Giovanni Soto was placed on the temporarily inactive list. Pitchers Michael Wagner and Stephen Perakslis were both assigned to Iowa.

Southern League—AA—Tennessee 4, Birmingham 2

The Smokies evened the best-of-five series as right-hander Tyler Skulina recorded his first AA win.

Hitting Recap: Smokies made the most of their six hits as CF Jacob Hannemann (.161) led of the game with a double and scored on a LF Mark Zagunis (.304) single to right. They added two more in the second after a pair of leadoff walks eventually scored on a 3B Ryan Dent  (.231) groundout and a Hannemann RBI single. They added an insurance run in the ninth when RF Billy McKinney drew a walk, took second on a wild pitch, and scored on DH Bijan Rademacher’s (.524) RBI single. Rademacher also walked three times. 

Pitching Chart: Tyler Skulina (1-1, 2.45 ERA) needed 83 pitches to get through five innings and earned his first win of the season. Skulina fanned six and yielded two runs on five hits and a walk. Relievers Juan Paniagua and Starling Peralta were perfect in four innings of relief (two each), retiring all six hitters they faced.

Smokies News: Jen-Ho Tseng (0-0, 0.00 ERA)  won’t miss a start after leaving his April 11 start after getting hit in the leg with a batted bal.  

Carolina League—High A—Carolina 2, Myrtle Beach 0

Pelicans (3-6) only had two hits as Carolina (6-3) took the series opener and extended MB’s losing streak to four games.

Hitting Recap: A double by 3B Jason Vosler and a single from Gioskar Amaya were the only hits. Gleyber Torres (.100) went 0f-or-2 with a pair of walks and was picked off first. Ian Happ (.129) was 0-for-4.

Pitching Chart: Trevor Clifton (0-2, 5.87 ERA) took the loss, allowing two runs on three hits and three walks. He fanned six, threw three wild pitches and was called for a balk. Jordan Minch scattered five hits over 2.1 shutout frames but did allow an inherited runner to score in the fifth. James Farris worked a scoreless eighth. 

Pelicans News: Erick Leal (1-0, 5.40 ERA) gets the ball on Saturday night against Carolina. 

Midwest League—Low A—Fort Wayne 10, South Bend 3

For the second straight night, the Tin Caps (6-3) feasted on South Bend (4-4) pitching.

Hitting Recap: 1B Ian Rice (.444) had two hits, scored twice and drew a walk in four plate appearances. DH Daniel Spingola was 2-for-4 with a run scored. CF Donnie Dewees (.406) hit in the two-hole and was 0-for-4 with a RBI. 2B Sutton Whiting (.300) and RF Eddy Martinez (.250) plated runs.

Pitching Chart: Ryan Kellogg (1-1, 3.86 ERA) got the start and pitched into the fifth, surrendering four runs on six hits and two walks. He fanned four and threw 81 pitches. Casey Bloomquist was charged with three runs (one earned) in 1.2 innings. John Williamson made his ’16 debut in the 7th but allowed three runs (one earned) on a hit and two walks. Greyfer Eregua tossed a scoreless 8th.

SB-Cubs News: A starter has yet to be named but it could be Adbert Alzolay......RH Michael Wagner has been promoted to AAA Iowa and John Williamson has been activated from the disabled list.
