Pacific Coast League—AAA—New Orleans 7, Iowa 5
New Orleans jumped out to a 6-0 lead and hung on for the win.
Hitting Recap: CF Albert Almora (.324) paced the offense with his first thre-hit game at Iowa. Almora drove in a run and scored twice in four plate appearances. 2B Arismendy Alcantara (.262) went 3-for-5 with a triple and a run scored. 1B Daniel Vogelbach (.405) was on base three times with a double and two walks while C Willson Contreras (.421) went 1-for-3 and plated a run. Matt Murton made his I-Cubs debut as a pinch-hitter in the sixth and struckout. Murton was activated from DL on April 18.
Pitching Chart: Scott Barnes (1-2, 7.00 ERA) made a spot start and got tagged for five runs in two innings on five hits, including a three-run, first-inning homer. Stephen Perakslis tossed three no-hit innings but surrendered an unearned run. He threw 47 pitches, 30 for strikes, and fanned two. Giovanni Soto made his Cubs debut, working a 1-2-3 sixth inning. Felix Pena lowered his ERA to 1.29 with two shutout innings with three strikeouts.
I-Cubs Notes: Drew Rucinski (0-2, 8.71), still looking for his first win with the Cubs after two rough outings against Round Rock, gets the ball Wednesday night.......The Cubs activated LHP Giovanni Soto from the inactive list. Soto was acquired from the Indians for cash......LHP Tyler Ihrig was placed on the DL with a blister and RHP Michael Wagner was assigned to Eugene. Both pitchers were sent to Iowa to help fill holes.
Southern League—AA—Tennessee 9, Montgomery 3
Bijan Rademacher smacked a pair of homers and knocked in four to lead the Smokies over the Biscuits.
Hitting Recap: Bijan Rademacher (.452) was named the Southern League Player of the Week on Monday after hitting .440/.576/.720 with six runs, two homers and seven batted in. He’s off to a better start in week two. The 24-year-old hit a pair of bombs on Tuesday night, knocking in four runs. CF Jacob Hannemann (.204) led off the first with a solo homer while 2B Chesny Young (.262) went 1-for-3 with two stolen base and two runs. 3B Jeimer Candelario (.182) scored twice and was on base three times with a single and two walks.
Pitching Chart: Brad Markey (1-0, 2.40 ERA) worked around eight hits and four walks over five innings to win his first AA game. The right-hander gave up a pair of solo homers and fanned three in the 90-pitch outing. Michael Jensen got charged with an earned run in his two innings of work, allowing two hits, walking two and fanning two in the 38-pitch outing. James Pugliese and Josh Conway both threw a scoreless frame.
Smokies News: Tyler Skulina (1-1, 2.45 ERA) makes his third start on Wednesday afternoon vs. Montgomery. The 4th round pick in 2014 out of Kent State earned his first AA victory the last time out, working five innings against Birmingham in the 4-2 win. The Smokies have placed RHP David Garner and RHP Starling Peralta on the temporary inactive list
Carolina League—High A—Winston-Salem 6, Myrtle Beach 5
Winston-Salem rallied to beat the Pelicans on a walk-off single in the ninth.
Hitting Recap: SS Gleyber Torres (.130) smacked his first homer of the season in the first and finished the game 1-for-4. 1B Yasiel Balaguert (.278) went 2-for-4 and slugged his first homer in the 8th while 3B Jason Vosler (.341) extended his hit streak to eight game, going 2-for-4 with a run. RF Jeffrey Baez (.262) has reached base for the 12th straight game, going 1-for-3 with a double and a walk. DH Ian Happ (.294) was 0-for-3 with walk.
Pitching Chart: Jonathan Martinez tossed six solid innings and was in line for the win when he departed. The right-hander allowed two runs on five hits and a walk in the 80-pitch outing. Jordan Minch (0-1, 5.63 ERA) got charged with a blown save and took the loss, giving up the winning run in the bottom of the ninth with two outs on a walk-off single. The lefty gave up three runs in the 8th on three singles, a double and a sacrifice fly.
Pelicans News: Zach Hedges (0-2, 3.00 ERA) gets the start at Winston-Salem on Wednesday night. The right-hander worked into the seventh in his last outing at Carolina.
Midwest League—Low A—Bowling Green 12, South Bend 1
Bowling Green (6-7) beat the Cubs (6-6) for the first time in five games.
Hitting Recap: South Bend had 12 hits but went 2-for-14 with RISP. RF Daniel Spingola (.394) collected three hits for the second straight game and Andrew Ely (.270) was 3-for-4 with a double, the Cubs only extra base hit. DH P.J. Higgins (.278) and C Ian Rice (.400) both had two hits.
Pitching Chart: Preston Morrison (1-2, 5.68) didn’t make it out of the third, allowing four runs on seven hits and two walks in 2.2 frames. He fanned two in the 64-pitch outing. Casey Bloomquist didn’t fare any better, surrendering six runs on five hits and a walk in 2.1 innings. Scott Frazier gave up two runs in the 2.1 innings and James Norwood retired all five hitters he faced.
SB-Cubs News: Justin Steele (0-2, 12.71) looks to get on track in his third start. The 5th round pick in 2014 has allowed 12 runs in 5.2 innings. The SB-Cubs have activated IF Carlos Sepulveda off the disabled list.
