Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 2, New Orleans 1—Suspended in 7th
Rain suspended play in the seventh with the I-Cubs leading. The game will be completed on Friday.
Pitching Chart: Pierce Johnson came off the DL and made his first start since being hit on the pitching arm by a line drive on April 11, his only appearance of the season. He didn’t show any rust in the first, needing 12 pitches to retire the side in order, two on called strikes. Johnson kept the Zephyrs off the board until the fourth when with two outs, they strung together three straight singles. He finished the night throwing 88 pitches and fanned five with one walk. Giovanni Soto made his second appearance, tossing a scoreless sixth.
I-Cubs Notes: Iowa placed LHP Scott Barnes on the 7-day DL with a right calf strain......No starter has been named for Friday night but Ryan Williams is listed to go Saturday back at Principal Park against Oklahoma City (Dodgers). Williams hasn’t pitched since April 12 but did appear as a pinch-hitter in the recent Round Rock series.
Southern League—AA—Montgomery 8, Tennessee 1
Montgomery (8-6) scored four times in the second and beat the Smokies (6-9) to take the series.
Hitting Recap: Only run of the game came in the second when 1B Victor Caratini (.200) led off with a single and advanced to third on a single from LF Mark Zagunis (.231). C Taylor Davis (.308) then lifted a fly ball to right to score Caratini. Davis finished 2-for-2 while 3B Jeimer Candelario (.170) went 1-for-4. DH Bijan Rademacher (.410) extended his on-base streak to 28 games with a single in the first.
Pitching Chart: Jen-Ho Tseng (0-2, 6.75 ERA) worked a 1-2-3 first but surrendered four runs in the second on a walk and three hits, including a three-run homer. Tseng gave up a solo homer in the third and the first two hitters of the sixth reached before his day ended after 93 pitches. He was charged with seven runs and walked three. Tseng has struggled with his command thus far and without overpowering stuff, needs to be able to throw strikes consistently and stay ahead in counts. James Pugliese allowed two inherited runners to score in the sixth and the Biscuits added another run off the right-hander as he pitched three innings. Josh Conway tossed a scoreless ninth.
Smokies News: Rob Zastryzny (0-2, 9.28 ERA) gets the start at Mobile on Friday night......Smokies have dropped the deciding game in all three five-game series to start the season......Smokies don’t return home until May 4 with the next 10 games at Mobile and Biloxi.
Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 6, Carolina 5
Yasiel Balaguert smacked a walk-off three run homer in the bottom of the ninth to give the Pelicans (8-7) the win over Carolina (6-9).
Hitting Recap: Yasiel Balaguert (.306) went 3-for-4, scored twice, and knocked in four runs, the final three coming on the dramatic blast in the 9th. CF Charcer Burks (.214) doubled with one out and after a ground out, 2B Ian Happ (.298) walked to set the table for Balaguert, who extended his hit streak to six games. Burks has reached base in 10 straight games. 3B Jason Vosler (.327) was 2-for-4 with a RBI single in the first.
Pitching Chart: Trevor Clifton made his third start and second against Carolina, working into the sixth. He allowed two runs on three hits and two walks with a pair of punchouts, and was in line for the win. Ryan McNeil surrendered a three-run homer in the 7th when Burks tried to make a diving grab and the ball got by him, allowing Dansby Swanson to circle the bases. McNeil gave up three hits and walked two. Jose Rosario worked a pair of scoreless frames and got credit for his first win since Aug. 14 of 2014 while with Daytona.
Pelicans News: Erick Leal (2-0, 2.70 ERA) gets the ball against the Mudcats on Friday night. Trey Martin was activated off the DL and added to the Pelicans roster. Martin started the year on the DL and was named a minor league gold glove winner last year, hitting. .239/.281/.307 with 14 steals and 35 runs scored in 90 games at Myrtle Beach. He was the Cubs 13th round pick in 2011.....OF Rashad Crawford has missed the last three games after fouling a ball off his foot at Winston-Salem on April 18.
Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 7, Fort Wayne 2
Eddy Martinez hit his second homer and three South Bend pitchers cooled off Fort Wayne’s bats.
Hitting Recap: Eddy Martinez launched a two-run homer in the third and scored twice, finishing 2-for-4 to up his average to .245. SS Bryant Flete (.314) delivered two singles and a double, plating two runs. RF Daniel Spingola (.390) was 1-for-4 with a double, two runs, a RBI and a stolen base. LF Eloy Jimenez (.250) went 1-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI.
Pitching Chart: Ryan Kellogg (2-1, 2.35 ERA) held the top minor league hitting team to just one run over six innings and that was unearned. The left-hander fanned three, allowed three hits, issued one walk and only needed 75 pitches, 49 for strikes. John Williamson gave up a run in the seventh and got in trouble in the eight, departing with a line of 1.1 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 1 K, 3 WP. Greyfer Eregua stranded two inherited runners in the 8th and blanked the Tim Caps in the ninth for his second save, retiring all five hitters he faced. Eregua fanned two and has allowed three hits and a run in 9.2 innings.
