A recap of the April 22 Cubs minor league games

Right-hander Ryan Williams earned his first AAA victory and South Bend won on another walk-off.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 5, New Orleans 0

Iowa won the suspended game 4-1 and made it two straight as four pitchers combined to blank the Zephyrs. 

Hitting Recap: C Willson Contreras (.400) had two hits and knocked in a pair while 2B Logan Watkins (.184), SS Munenori Kawasaki (.200) and 1B Matt Murton (.250) all plated runs. 3B Kris Negron(.326) and RF John Andreoli(.208) both had two hits. .......In the suspended game, Matt Murton added a two-run double in the Cubs three-run seventh. RF Ryan Kalish (.387) had three hits.

Pitching Chart: Ryan Williams (1-1, 3.85 ERA) earned his first AAA victory, tossing five shutout innings. He fanned three and walked four. Armando Rivero threw two frames while Carl Edwards, Jr. and Jean Machi each added a scoreless inning......In the suspended game, Giovanni Soto got credit for the win and Spencer Patton earned his second save with a 1-2-3 ninth.

I-Cubs Notes: No starter has been announced for the I-Cubs.

Southern League—AA—Tennessee 5, Mobile 4

Smokies got 14 hits and Rob Zastryzny threw six solid innings as Tennessee won the opener.

Hitting Recap: 1B Taylor Davis led the hit parade going 3-for-5 with a double and a run driven in. CF Jacob Hannemann (.207) went 2-for-5 and slugged his second homer. 3B Jeimer Candelario smacked his first long ball and walked twice. 2B Chesny Young (.333) and RF Billy McKinney (.218) had two hits each.

Pitching Chart: Rob Zastryzny (2-0, 3.52 ERA) fanned six in six innings, allowing a run on four hits and a walk. He threw 90 pitches and had a game score of 63. Corey Black allowed one run, David Garner surrendered two but Andury Acevedo got the Smokies out of a jam in the 8th and Michael Jensen fanned the side in the ninth for his first save

Smokies News: After tossing seven shutout innings in his last start, Paul Blackburn (2-0, 0.50 ERA) looks to build on his early success in his fourth start.

Carolina League—High A—Carolina 6, Myrtle Beach 3

Mudcats won the rain shorted game as they scored twice in the first two innings. Game was called after eight innings. 

Hitting Recap: SS Gleyber Torres (.140) had his first multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 and scoring twice. 2B Ian Happ  (.317) was 2-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI while RF Jeffrey Baez (.259) had two hits and swiped his ninth base.

Pitching Chart: Erick Leal didn’t make it out of the second, surrendering four runs on four hits and four walks. Tyler Ihrig tossed 4.2 innings of no-hit ball but did allow an unearned run. Daury Torrez gave up a run over the final 2.1 innings.

Pelicans News: Jake Stinnett (1-0, 3.287 ERA) makes his third start of the year and second against the Mudcats.....Series of roster moves for the Pelicans. Rashad Crawford was placed on the DL and James Pugliese was assigned back to Myrtle Beach and placed on the DL. Tyler Ihrig we assigned to Myrtle Beach from Iowa and taken off the DL.


Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 7, Fort Wayne 6—10 innings 

Donnie Dewees scored the winning run on a Matt Rose grounder as South Bend won in walk-off fashion in the bottom of the 10th.

Hitting Recap: CF Donnie Dewees (.364) went 2-for-5, knocked in two, and scored three times, including the game-winner. 2B Carlos Sepulveda (.167) was 2-for-5 and 1B Matt Rose (.118) got credit for 2 RBI. DH Eloy Jimenez  (.255) and RF Eddy Martinez (.241) both had one hit and knocked in a run.

Pitching Chart: Kyle Twomey got the start and went five innings, allowing six runs on 10 hits. He struckout six and threw 83 pitches. Casey Bloomquist no-hit the Tin Caps for four frames and James Norwood fanned two in the 10th and got credit for the win.

SB-Cubs News: Adbert Alzolay (0-0, 4.76 ERA) looks to tame Fort Wayne in his second straight start against the Tin Caps. He allowed three runs on five hits and a walk in 6.1 innings on April 17.
