A recap of the April 23 Cubs minor league games

Paul Blackburn threw a career-high eight innings as the Smokies beat Mobile 5-2.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Oklahoma City 6, Iowa 4

The Dodgers scored two runs in the top of the 13th as Iowa erased a 4-0 deficit.

Hitting Recap: CF Albert Almora went 2-for-5 and hit his second homer, a two-run shot in the sixth. Kris Negron and John Andreoli both knocked in runs while Tim Federowicz had two hits and scored once.

Pitching Chart: Stephen Perakslis made his first career start and lasted 4.2 innings, allowing two runs on four hits with six strikeouts. Brandon Gomes got charged with two runs in 1.2 innings and Giovanni Soto took the loss, allowing two runs in the 13th. 

Southern League—AA—Tennessee 5, Mobile 2

Smokier score four times in the top of the ninth and Paul Blackburn fired another gem.

Hitting Recap: SS Carlos Penalver ripped a single to tie the game in the 9th and LF Mark Zagunis followed with a two-run single for the win. 1B David Freitas went 2-for-4 with a RBI and Ryan Dent delivered a pinch-hit single in the ninth and scored. 

Pitching Chart: Paul Blackburn tossed a career-high eight innings and put his name in the hat for Southern League Pitcher of the Week. The right-hander allowed two runs, both unearned, on seven hits and no walks to lower his ERA to 0.35 and up his record to 3-0. Blackburn threw 94 pitches, 62 for strikes. Juan Paniagua pitched a scoreless ninth for his second save. 

Smokies News: Brad Markey (1-0, 2.40 ERA) gets the ball on Sunday afternoon. Smokies have activated RHP Starling Peralta from the temporary inactive list.

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 6, Carolina 5

The Mudcats scored four times in the top of the 9th but the Pelicans hung on.

Hitting Recap: Ian Happ (.317) hit his third homer of the season, a two-run blast in the fifth. He finished 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored. SS Gleyber Torres (.167) went 14 games without a multi-hit game, now his has two straight. Torres was 2-for-3 with two runs. DH Yasiel Balaguert (.300) and 3B Jason Vosler (.351) both had two hits. 

Pitching Chart: Jake Stinnett (2-0, 2.55 ERA) worked into the seventh, holding the Mudcats to one run on three hits. The right-hander fanned seven in the 80-pitch outing and had a game score of 71. Jordan Minch worked a scoreless inning and David Berg got his third save despite allowing four runs, two earned.

Pelicans News: Tommy Thorpe (1-1, 4.35 ERA) makes his third start of the Pelicans. 

Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 7, Fort Wayne 4

Adbert Alzolay’s arm and the bat of Carlos Sepulveda led the Cubs past the Tin Caps.

Hitting Recap: 2B Carlos Sepulveda matched his career-high with three hits, added two doubles, knocked in three, and scored twice. CF Donnie Dewees stroked a pair of doubles and C P.J. Higgins went 2-for-4 with a RBI. LF Eloy Jimenez knocked in two. 

Pitching Chart: Adbert Alzolay earned his first MWL win, holding the Tin Caps to two hits over six innings. An unearned run was the only blemish on Alzolay’s outing that included four strikeouts. Scott Frazier, Scott Effross and Greyfer Eregua all pitched in relief.

SB-Cubs News: Carson Sands (1-0, 3.60 ERA) makes his third start on Sunday afternoon.
