A recap of the April 27 Cubs minor league games

Ian Happ and Cale Brockmeyer slugged two-run homers to lead Myrtle Bach past Potomac in the only game of the night in the organization. South Bend was rained out while Tennessee and Iowa had the day off.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa

Iowa (7-11) had the day off and return to action on Thursday night at Principal Park for Kyle Schwarber Jersey Shirt Night against Colorado Springs (Brewers).  Ryan Williams takes the mound and is coming off his best performance, five shutout innings against New Orleans.

Hitting Recap: OF Ryan Kalish leads the offense with a .381/.491/.500 slash as the I-Cubs have six hitters batting over .300. C Willson Contreras is hitting .375/.419/.446 in 14 games while 1B Daniel Vogelbach is off to a good start with two homers, a team-best 14 RBI and a slash of .362/.456/.552. CF Albert Almora leads the team with 14 runs and 22 hits, and is batting .344/.389/.500 with two homers and four doubles. IF Kris Negron (.305/.323/.458) and C Tim Federowicz (.303/.415/.515) are off to good starts.

Pitching Chart: Only three weeks into the season and the I-Cubs have already used 10 different starters. Drew Rucinski (0-2, 6.04 ERA, 22.1 IP, 4 GS), Ryan Williams (1-1, 4.85 ERA, 13 IP, 3 GS), and Pierce Johnson (0-1, 3.5 ERA, 12.2 IP, 3 GS) have been the only consistent starters on the staff. Jean Machi (0-0, 0.90 ERA, 10 IP) leads the taem with eight appearances and Spencer Patton has the only two saves, fanning 12 in seven shutout innings. Felix Pena has 16 K in 11 IP and sports a 0.82 ERA and a team-best 0.55 WHIP.

Southern League—AA—Tennessee

Smokies (11-9) had Wednesday off and take their five-game win streak into Biloxi (Brewers) for a five-game set. Rob Zastryzny (2-0, 3.52 ERA) gets the ball in the opener on Thursday night.

Hitting Recap: Bijan Rademacheris the best hitter in the Southern League, tops in average (.385), OBP (.515) and OPS (1.188), and leads the Smokies in HR (4), RBI (13) and runs (13). Chesny Young is second in batting and sport a slash of .382/.506/.529 with 10 stolen bases and a team-high 26 hits. Catchers Taylor Davis (.327/.356/.404) and David Freitas (.321/.406/.357) have both seen time at first while C Victor Caratini is batting .259/.412/.389 after a 4-for-27 start. Out to slow starts are OF Billy McKinney (.200/.284/.233), 3B Jeimer Candelario (.217/.345/.377) and Mark Zagunis (.237/.366/.288).

Pitching Chart: Paul Blackburn (3-0, 0.35 ERA) has been the top pitcher in the Southern League to start the season, only allowing one earned run in four starts over 26 innings.  Rob Zastryzny (2-0, 3.52 ERA, 4 GS, 23 IP), Brad Markey (2-0, 3.00 ERA, 4 GS, 21 IP), Tyler Skulina (1-1, 5.12 ERA, 4 GS, 19.1 IP), and Jen-Ho Tseng (1-2, 5.82 ERA, 4 GS, 17 IP), round out the rotation. Josh Conway (0-2, 6.14 ERA) leads the bullpen with eight appearances while RH Starling Peralta (0-0, 3.00 ERA, 9 IP, 6 G) and RH Juan Paniagua (0-1, 1.13 ERA, 8 IP, 7 G) both have two saves. LH Gerardo Concepcion has nine punchouts in 10.1 shutout innings.

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 5, Potomac 1

Ian Happ and Cael Brockmeyer slugged two-run homers and three Pelicans pitchers combined for 11 strikeouts. 

Hitting Recap: 2B Ian Happ (.319) slugged his fourth homer of the year,a two-run shot in the first, scoring SS Gleyber Torres (.178), who doubled. It was Happ’s fourth homer and third hitting left-handed. C Cael Brockmeyer (.147) hit his second homer, a two-run blast in the fifth. DH Daniel Lockhart (.228) had his second straight multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with a RBI double. Happ finished 2-for-4.

Pitching Chart: Zach Hedges (2-2, 2.16 ERA) pitched into the sixth in his fourth straight start, surrendering a run in the first and then blanking the P-Nats over the next five innings. He walked three, allowed four hits, and fanned six in the efficient 75-pitch outing. He recorded 10 ground ball outs and had a game score of 63. Daury Torrez fanned five in two scoreless innings, allowing a hit and a walk in the 36-pitch outing. David Berg walked his first hitter of the season but got the final three outs.

Pelicans News: Trevor Clifton (0-2, 4.15 ERA) gets the ball in the final game of the series on Thursday night.

Midwest League—Low A—South Bend @ Quad Cites—Postponed

Cubs were rained out and the two teams will play a doubleheader starting at 6 p.m. CST. Justin Steele (1-2, 8.44 ERA) is scheduled to start the first game and no starter has been named for the night-cap.
