Shuckers tied the game in the bottom of the 8th and won it with a walk-off single in the 9th.
Hitting Recap: Smokies scored their only run of the game in the first when they collected three of their four hits. Chesny Young singled, stole second and scored on Jeimer Candelario’s single. Mark Zagunis was 2-for-4.
Pitching Chart: In his fifth start, Paul Blackburn (3-0, 0.29 ERA) tossed five shutout innings and will likely be named the Cubs Minor League Pitcher of the Month in a few days. The right-hander fanned four while allowing four hits and a walk in the 71-pitch outing. He recorded six ground ball outs and had a game score of 62. Josh Conway worked around a pair of walks in a scoreless 6th. Starling Peralta walked in a run in the 8th and Juan Paniagua left the bases loaded in the 8th but couldn’t get out of the ninth, allowing the winning run to score.

Carolina League—High A—Salem 4, Myrtle Beach 3
Salem used a three-run sixth to beat the Pelicans for the second straight night.
Hitting Recap: Pelicans made the most of their four hits. LF Shawon Dunston (.170) singled with two outs in the third, took second on a walk, and scored on a single by SS Gleyber Torres (.179) to tie the game at 1-1. The Pelicans added two runs in the 7th on a RBI single from 2B Daniel Lockhart(.237) and a sacrifice fly from C Gioskar Amaya (.152). 3B Jason Vosler went 1-for-4 with a run scored.
Pitching Chart: Erick Leal (2-2, 5.94 ERA) surrendered four runs over five innings as the Red Sox collected eight hits and two walks off the right-hander. Leal threw 88 pitches and had a game score of 34. Jose Rosario fanned two over two shutout frames but allowed two inherited runners to score in the sixth. Jordan Minch retired all six hitters he faced.
Pelicans News: Jake Stinnett (2-0, 2.55 ERA) faces the Red Sox in the series finale.
Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 5, Cedar Rapids 1
Adbert Alzolay tossed five solid innings and South Bend collected 12 hits to even the series with the Kernals.
Hitting Recap: LF Donnie Dewees (.345) had three hits including his 8th double, 16th RBI, and 7th stolen base. Eddy Martinez went 2for-5 and delivered a two-run double in the first that gave the Cubs the lead for good. DH Daniel Spingola (.403) extended his hit streak to 13 games with a pair of singles. RF Eloy Jimenez (.284) went 2-for-4 with a double and a walk while C P.J. Higgins (271) and 3B Andrew Ely (.232) plated runs.
Pitching Chart: Adbert Alzolay (2-0, 2.84 ERA) set the tone early, winning a 15-pitch battle with the leadoff hitter, getting a groundout to short. The right-hander only allowed three hits over five innings as the Kernals finally broke through in the fifth with a two-out single to score their only run of the night. Alzolay needed 93 pitches to get through five innings and finished with a game score of 59. Craig Brooks walked the bases loaded and then got out of the jam with three straight punchouts. Casey Bloomquist earned his first pro save, keeping Cedar Rapids off the board the fail three frames. Bloomquist only allowed a single and extended his scoreless streak to 10 innings.
