Everybody got rained out and Iowa lost the first game of a twin-bill

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Game 1—Colorado Spring 4, Iowa; Game 2—Postponed

Sky Sox used a three-run homer to win the opener and Mother Nature took the night cap.

Hitting Recap: John Andreoli and Ryan Kalish opened the first with back-to-back singles and Willson Contreras made it three straight hits with a RBI double. Albert Almora grounded out to short to plate Kalish.  Andreoli added a RBI groundout in the 7th but the tying run was stranded at second. Contreras finished the game 2-for-3 with two doubles and Andreoli added two singles.

Pitching Chart: Drew Rucinski (0-3, 6.62 ERA) retired the first 11 hitters he faced on Sunday but a solo homer in the fourth and three-run blast in the 5th ruined a great start. The right-hander threw 82 pitches and ended the game with a line of 5 IP, 3 H, 4 R, 1 BB, 4 K in his team-high fifth start. Rucinski leads Iowa pitchers with 27.1 innings. Armando Rivero kept the Sky Sox off the board in the final two frames, fanning one in the 24-pitch outing.

I-Cubs Notes: No announcement on a make-up date for the game with Colorado Springs. The Sky Sox don’t return to Principal Park until the final series of the season. The game could be made up when Iowa travels to Colorado June 13-16 or July 7-10......Iowa (9-12) starts an eight-game road trip that includes four games at Nashville and four more in Omaha. Pierce Johnson (0-1, 3.55 ERA) is scheduled to get the ball on Monday night in Nashville.

Southern League—AA—Tennessee @ Biloxi—Postponed

Sunday’s game was rained out. The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Monday with a 5:40 EST first pitch. Tyler Skulina (1-1, 5.12 ERA) and Jen-Ho Tseng (1-2, 5.82 ERA) are scheduled to pitch the twin-bill for Tennessee.

Smokies News: Didn’t mention this yesterday but on Saturday night Jeimer Candelario made his second start at first. The third baseman hadn’t seen any action at first since his days in Boise back in 2012 but it reinforces the Cubs commitment to have their players be able to play more than one position.
