Sounds took an early lead and beat Iowa in the series opener.
Hitting Recap: C Willson Contreras (.353) smacked his first AAA homer, a solo shot to left center in the 8th. DH Daniel Vogelbach (.343) went 1-for-3 with a walk while 2B Arismendy Alcantara (.254) had two of the I-Cubs six hits.
Pitching Chart: Pierce Johnson needed 52 pitches to get through three innings and left after surrendering four runs on four hits, including a homer. Johnson fanned three and had a game score of 38. Miguel Mejia allowed a run in the fourth while Brandon Gomes (1 IP, 2 K), Felix Pena (2 IP, 4 K) and Giovanni Soto (1 IP, 2 K) combined to blank the Sounds over the final four frames.
I-Cubs Notes: Ryan Williams (2-1, 5.30 ERA) makes his fifth start for the I-Cubs Tuesday night at Nashville.
Southern League—AA—Game 1—Biloxi 3 Tennessee 2; Game 2—Tennessee 4, Biloxi 1—8 innings
Hitting Recap: GAME 1—Only three hits for Smokies in the opener as both runs scored in the second. A sacrifice fly from Kelly Dugan (.143) scored Billy McKinney (.219) and Carlos Penalver (.218) followed with a two-out RBI triple. McKinney was 1-for-2 with a walk........... GAME 2—Smokies tied the game in the fifth when 1B Ryan Dent (.152) grounded into a double play with the bases loaded, scoring McKinney. In the 8th, Zagunis (.250) led off with his first AA homer to center and after Dent singled, Dugan slugged a pinch-hit two-run blast over the left-center field wall. C Victor Caratini (.265) had two singles.
Pitching Chart: GAME 1—The Shuckers scored three unearned runs in the second, the only runs allowed by starter Tyler Skulina. The right-hander allowed five hits, walked three and recorded two strikeouts in the 86-pitch outing. Gerardo Concepcion pitched a scoreless sixth and has not allowed a run in 13.1 innings............GAME 2— Jen-Ho Tseng left in the third with an apparent injury after allowing a hit and recording a strikeout in 2.1 innings. He left with the trainer but no word on the extent of the injury. Brad Markey gave up a solo homer in 2.2 innings of relief and David Garner earned his first AA victory, tossing two shutout frames with three strikeouts. Corey Black worked a scoreless ninth for his second save.

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 3, Winston-Salem 2—11 innings
Jason Vosler doubled and beat the throw home on a grounder in the 11th to give the Pelicans the win.
Hitting Recap: 1B Yasiel Balaguert (.290) gave the Pelicans a 2-0 lead in the first on his third homer of the year. In the 11th, 3B Jason Vosler (.321) led off with a double, took third on a sacrifice bunt and scored when he beat the throw home on a ground ball to second off the bat of 2B Daniel Lockhart (.209). Ian Happ (.310) was 1-for-4 with a walk and his sixth double.
Pitching Chart: Jake Stinnett was solid in his fourth start of the season, only yielding an unearned run over five innings. He fanned three, gave up two hits, and walked one in the 54 pitch outing. Stinnett had a game score of 63. Tommy Thorpe surrendered a solo homer in the 7th and got charged with a blown save. The left-hander fanned five over 2.2 frames, allowing three hits on 44 pitches. David Berg improved to 2-0 with 2.1 shutout frames and James Farris earned his fourth save, striking out the side in the 11th.

Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 3, Wisconsin 0
Carson Sands and Preston Morrison combined to blank the Timber Rattlers.
Hitting Recap: Cubs took a 2-0 lead in the 5th when LF Eloy Jimenez (.294) singled and eventually scored on a wild pitch. 3B Jesse Hodges (.438) added a RBI. Daniel Spingola (.400) extended his hitting streak to 14 games but was thrown out of the game after being called out at third and arguing the call in the 7th inning. Jimenez finished 2-for-4 and 2B Carlos Sepulveda (.270) doubled and scored in the 6th.
Pitching Chart: Carson Sands (2-0, 4.43 ERA)s went six innings twice last year for Eugene and matched his career-high on Monday night, tossing the longest shutout of his career. Sands only needed 27 pitches to get through the first three frames, recording four fly ball outs to go along with pair of strikeouts and a double play. The lefty got out of a jam in the 4th with back-to-back Ks and a slick DP started by Carlos Sepulveda ended the fifth. He only needed 60 pitches, 38 for strikes, as he showed good command of fastball and change-up. Preston Morrison was just as impressive in relief, fanning five over three innings to earn his first save. Morrison allowed a single and threw 39 pitches.
