Kalish to Chicago
The Cubs have purchased the contract of outfielder Ryan Kalish from Iowa and placed him on the 25-man roster. The Cubs moved Matt Szczur to the 15-day DL after a MRI reveled a hamstring strain. To make room on the 40-man roster, the Cubs transferred 3B Christian Villanueva to the 60-day DL. Villanueva broke his leg in spring training.
When the Cubs signed Kalish to a free agent contract on March 3, I doubt they envisioned him playing two months later for Chicago but injuries to Kyle Schwarber and Szczur have given the former Cubs another chance at the big leagues.
The 28-year-old missed all of 2015 after having surgery on both knees, and after playing in Puerto Rico, the former Red Sox got another opportunity with the Cubs, playing 57 games in Chicago (.248/.295/.347) and 87 in Iowa (.251/.322/.404) in 2014.
After appearing in 10 spring training games for the North Siders, Kalish was assigned to Iowa and has been one of the hottest hitters in the Pacific Coast League. In 20 games for the I-Cubs, Kalish is batting .368/.471/.509 with four doubles and more walks (10) than strikeouts (9).
