Zach Hedges tossed seven shutout innings to lead Myrtle Beach past Winston-Salem while Daniel Vogelbach knocked in five runs, four coming on a grand slam in Iowa’s 8-4 win.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 8, Nashville 4

Daniel Vogelbach smacked a grand slam and knocked in five runs as Iowa beat the Sounds.

Hitting Recap: DH Daniel Vogelbach (.354) cleared the bases with his third homer in the sixth and added a RBI single in the ninth, ending the day 3-for-5 with two runs scored. He is now tied for the lead in RBI in the Cubs minors with 21. RF John Andreoli (.202) was 1-for-3 with two RBI and swiped his 8th base. C Willson Contreras  (.338) walked all four plate appearances and scored twice. 3B Logan Watkins (.182) went 1-for-3 with a RBI.

Pitching Chart: Jake Buchanan (1-1, 4.41 ERA) earned his first win in the Cubs organization, allowing just a solo homer in six innings. The former Astro fanned six, gave up four hits, and walked two I the 86-pitch outing, He had a game score of 64. Jean Machi was charged with three runs in an inning of work while Giovanni Soto got his second hold with two strikeouts in 1.2 frames. Brandon Gomes earned his first save, getting the final out with two runners on.

I-Cubs Notes: Iowa has not named a starter for Thursday night’s game in Nashville.

Southern League—AA—Mississippi 8, Tennessse 7

The Braves (10-15) scored on a wild pitch in the top of the 9th to beat the Smokies (13-12)

Hitting Recap: Kelly Dugan hit his second homer since joining the Smokies, a three-run shot that gave them a 7-6 lead in the 5th. LF Mark Zagunis (.260) and SS Carlos Penalver(.231) both had two hits and knocked in a run while CF Jacob Hannemann (.240) and P Rob Zastryzny (.167) had RBI.

Pitching Chart: Rob Zastryzny got tagged for four first inning runs but pitched four more frames, ending the night allowing six runs on eight hits, including two homers. He fanned three in the 89-pitch outing. Michael Jensen gave up four runs and a hit in the 6th while Josh Conway threw two scoreless, fanning a pair. Starling Peralta gave up a double and then uncorked a wild pitch to allow the eventual winning to score.

Smokies News: Duane Underwood (0-0, 2.25 ERA) makes his second start on Thursday night against Mississippi.....The Smokies activated RHP Michael Jensen from the disabled list and promoted RHP Stephen Perakslis to Iowa......2B Chesny Young was named the Southern League Player of the Month for April after hitting .401/.505/.524 with 2 homers and 11 stolen bases.

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 3, Winston-Salem 0

Zach Hedges tossed seven shutout innings and Cael Brockmeyer plated a pair of runs as the Pelicans knocked off the Dash to take the three-game series. 

Hitting Recap: 1B Yasiel Balaguert (.290) leads the Cubs minors in RBI (21) and the Cuban native added to that total in the 4th with a two-out double, scoring SS Gleyber Torres (.189), who reached on a fielder’s choice and stole second. C Cael Brockmeyer (.178) gave the Pelicans a 2-0 lead in the 7th with a RBI single. DH Shawon Dunston  (.233) drew a two-out walk, stole second (3), and scored on Brockmeyer’s base hit up the middle. The Pelicans backstop added a RBI single in the 9th and finished the game 2-for-4. Dunston finished 2-for-4 and Balaguert had two hits.

Pitching Chart: Zach Hedges (3-2, 1.69 ERA) turned in his fourth straight quality start, coaxing 11 ground ball outs over seven shutout innings. The right-hander only allowed three hits, didn’t walk a batter, retired 12 straight at one point, and fanned three for a game score of 76. The Cubs 24th round pick in 2015 commands a fastball in the low 90s and also features a slider, change-up and curve. The California native led South Bend with 132 innings last year. Ryan McNeil eared his second hold with a scoreless 8th and James Farris worked the ninth for his fifth save.

Pelicans News: Trevor Clifton (0-2, 4.00 ERA) gets the start on Thursday night as the Pelicans head to Wilmington for thee games.

Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 4, Wisconsin 2

Wisconsin (13-14) scored four times in the 4th and beat South Bend (14-11) for the second straight game to take the series.

Hitting Recap: Tyler Alamo put the Cubs on the board in the 7th with a RBI double, just missing his first career homer. He finished the game 2-for-4 and is hitting .333/.385/.396 in 13 games. 2B Andrew Ely (3-for-4) singled to leadoff the 9th and eventually scored on a passed ball. CF Daniel Spingola’s 14-game hitting streak ended, going 0-for-3 with a walk, and popped out to end the game with runners on second and third. RF Eloy Jimenez singled and is hitting .290.

Pitching Chart: Making his fifth start, Justin Steele (1-4, 9.39 ERA) fanned four over the first three scoreless innings but never got an out in the fourth. An error, a hit by pitch and a grounder down the third base line that was ruled fair loaded the bases. A single and a bases clearing double made it 4-0 and ended Steele’s day after 76 pitches. Casey Bloomquist has been nearly un-hittable over his last three outings, 10 scoreless frames and only two hits allowed. The right-hander with a sharp breaking ball could be working his way into the rotation, blanking the Rattlers for three innings with three punchouts to lower his ERA to 3.43.  Scott Effross threw two scoreless innings with three strikeouts and James Norwood tossed the ninth.

SB-Cubs News: Kyle Twomey (0-2, 5.85 ERA) gets the ball on Thursday night as Beloit comes to town for the first of three games.
