News, Notes and Game Recaps from May 7-8

Complete recap of this weekend’s minor league games including gems from Ryan Williams, Erick Leal and Brad Markey

May 8—Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 6, Omaha 5

Iowa scored six unanswered runs and hung on for the win.

Hitting Recap: LF Kris Negron (.305) led the offense with two hits and three RBI. Albert Almora and Willson Contreras both had two hits while Arismendy Alcantara slugged his 3rd homer, a solo shot.

Pitching Chart: Ryan Williams went eight innings to improve to 4-1 as the right-hander fanned five in the 94-pitch gem. He allowed two runs on four hits and a walk, and had a game score of 70. Felix Pena had given o one run in his previous 15 innings (8 games) but allowed three runs in the 9th on three hits and a walk before getting  strikeout to end the game.

I-Cubs Notes: Jake Buchanan (1-1, 4.41 ERA) gets the start on Monday night in Omaha.

May 7—Pacific Coast League—AAA—Omaha 5, Iowa 4

Storm Chasers (17-11) scored twice in the 7th to take a 4-3 lead and added another run in the 8th to beat Iowa (13-14).

Hitting Recap: SS Munenori Kawasaki (.277) knocked in three runs with a two-run double in the 7th and a RBI groundout in the 9th. 2B Logan Watkins (.213) had three hits and scored twice. 3B Juan Perez (.279) went 3-for-3 with a RBI single and a run scored. LF Shane Victorino (.125) was 0-for-4. 

Pitching Chart: Michael Wagner made his second start for Iowa after being assigned to Des Moines from extended spring training. Wagner got the start April 16 at Round Rock, tossing 3.2 scoreless innings. Against Omaha, Wagner gave up two runs over three innings on three hits an three walks. He fanned four and threw 67 pitches. Jean Machi tossed three innings of scoreless relief, fanning four and allowing just one hit. Giovanni Soto got charged with a blown save and took the loss, giving up two runs in the 7th on a walk and two hits. Brandon Gomes yielded a run in the 8th on two hits and a walk.

May 8—Southern League—AA—Tennessee 2, Mississippi 0

Brad Markey and three relievers combined to blank the Braves.

Hitting Recap: Smokies scored the only run they would need in the first when C Victor Caratini (.275) lifted a fly ball to center that plated LF Mark Zagunis (.270). The Braves walked CF Bijan Rademacher (.308) to pitch to 1B Anthony Giansanti (.229) and he made them pay with a RBI single in the 6th, his second hit. Jeimer Candelario went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.

Pitching Chart: Brad Markey allowed six hits and walked three over five innings but he kept the Braves off the board, thanks in part to the arm to Billy McKinney, who threw a runner out at home in the 2nd. Markey fanned three, threw 70 pitches and had a game score of 55. Juan Paniagua fanned three in two frames, Gerardo Concepcion extended his scoreless streak to 14.2 innings, and Cory Black earned his 4th save.

Smokies News: Rob Zastryzny (2-1, 5.29 ERA) gets the start on Monday night as the Smokies open a five-game series in Montgomery.

May 7—Tennessee 5, Mississippi 3

Kelly Dugan’s two-run homer in the 6th broke a 3-3 tie and gave the Smokies the win.

Hitting Recap: Only six hits for Tennessee. C David Freitas  (.289) tied the game with a two-run double in the 6th and 1B Kelly Dugan (.235) gave the Cubs the lead with his fourth hit of the season, all homers. CF Jacob Hannemann went 2-for-4 and is hitting .314 over his last 10 games.

Pitching Chart: Tyler Skulina worked into the 6th inning and threw 86 pitches, allowing three runs (two earned) on eight hits and a walk. He fanned four and had a game score of 45. Starling Peralta (1-1, 3.75 ERA) got the win, recording the final two outs of the 6th while stranding two inherited runners. Michael Jensen tossed two shutout frames and Cory Black worked a 1-2-3 9th for his third save.

May 8—Carolina League—High A—Wilmington 6, Myrtle Beach 5—11 innings

Gleyber Torres hit a two-run homer in the top of the 9th to tie the game but the Blue Rocks won in a walk-off in the 11th.

Hitting Recap: Gleyber Torres went 3-for-5 and scored three times, including on a two-run homer in the top of the 9th to tie the game at 5-5. Ian Happ had three hits, stole his 5th base and scored once while 1B Yasiel Balaguert (.265), 3B Jason Vosler (.316) and C Cael Brockmeyer (.180) all plated runs. 

Pitching Chart: Jake Stinnett got the start, allowing four runs on five hits and three walks over five innings. He fanned five in the 83-pitch outing and finished with a game score of 42. Ryan McNeil worked a scoreless inning, Jose Rosario allowed a run in two frames, and James Farris fanned thee in two shutout innings. Jordan Minch (0-2, 4.40 ERA) took the loss, allowing an unearned run to score that reached on a Gleyber Torres throwing error. After the error, a walk and a single ended the game.

Pelicans News: Myrtle Beach has Monday off and return home on Tuesday night for three games with Winston-Salem.

May 7—Game 1—, Myrtle Beach 4 Wilmington 0; Game 2—Wilmington 2, Myrtle Beach 0

Erick Leal and David Berg combined to blank the Blue Rocks in the opener but Wilmington returned the favor in the nightcap.

Hitting Recap: GAME 1—2B Daniel Lockhart went 3-for-3 and was a homer shy of the cycle, scoring twice. Lockhart is 9-for-his-last-22. SS Gleyber Torres (.204) had two hits while 3B Jason Vosler (.304), C Cael Brockmeyer (.191) and LF Charcer Burks (.200) all knocked in runs.....GAME 2—Only three hits for the Pelicans—singles from 2B Ian Happ (.265), 3B Jason Vosler (.309) and C Gioskar Amaya (.171).

Pitching Chart: GAME 1—Erick Leal (3-2, 4.50 ERA) fired a gem in his best start of the year, allowing four hits over 5.1 shutout innings. The right-hander fanned four in the 82-pitch outing for a game score of 64. Entering the game with two on and one out in the 6th, David Berg induced a double play grounder and fanned the side in the 7th for his fourth save. .....GAME 2—Tommy Thorpe (2-2, 3.47 ERA) fanned seven in five innings but took the loss, allowing two runs on seven hits and a walk. He threw 84 pitches and had a game score of 51. Daury Torrez worked a scoreless 6th.

May 8—Midwest League—Low A—South Bend

South Bend has the day off on Sunday and embark on a 14-game road trip that includes stops in Dayton (June 9-11), Lansing (June 12-15), Great Lakes (June 17-19) and Lake County (June 21-23).

May 7—South Bend 6, Beloit 3

Cubs scored three runs in the bottom of the 6th to complete the sweep of Beloit on Saturday night.

Hitting Recap: 1B Tyler Alamo (.345) had three singles and drove in four runs, including the go-ahead runs in the 6th with a two-run single. CF Donnie Dewees (.308) went 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored while LF Eloy Jimenez had two hits to up his average to .295. RF Eddy Martinez  (.245) singled, knocked in a run, walked and scored twice.

Pitching Chart: Preston Morrison blanked the Snappers for five innings but never made it out of the 6th, allowing two runs before leaving and got charged with another run. In 5.1 innings, Morrison gave up five hits and a walk with two strikeouts. He was in control until the sixth when an error, a walk and a two-run double ended his night after 75 pitches. Greyfer Eregua (1-1, 3.94 ERA) allowed an inherited to score on a single in the 6th but got out of the frame without any further damage. In the 7th, the right-hander worked around a leadoff single and a walk, getting two strikeouts. Scott Effross fanned the side in the 8th and Craig Brooks worked a 1-2-3 9th for his second save.
