Justin Steele had his best outing with five shutout innings as South Bend blanked Dayton while Miguel Montero knocked in two runs in his second rehab start for Iowa.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 4, Nashville 2

Miguel Montero knocked in two runs in his second rehab start to help Iowa (16-15) over Nashville (15-18). 

Hitting Recap:Cubs catcher Miguel Montero had a pair of RBI single and struckout twice as the DH. Montero is 2-for-7. CF Albert Almora (.322) continues to square up AAA pitching with a pair of doubles and two run scored. Almora has an 8-game hitting streak and also made a diving catch that he turned into a double play. 3B Taylor Davis (.344) and SS Kris Negron (.300) both had two hits as the Cubs out-hit the Sounds 11-7.

Pitching Chart: Drew Rucinski (2-3, 6.45 ERA) picked up his second win, allowing two runs on six hits and three walks over five innings. He fanned five in the 88-pitch outing and had a game score of 49. Spencer Patton earned his fifth save with a scoreless ninth that included two punchouts. Giovanni Soto (1.2 IP) and Felix Pena (1.1 IP) both kept the Sounds off the board.

I-Cubs Notes: Iowa’s starter for Thursday 12:08 p.m. CST start has not been named.

Southern League—AA—Montgomery 8, Tennessee 1

The Biscuits handed Paul Blackburn his first loss of the season.

Hitting Recap: Only three hits for the Smokies, two singles from LF Mark Zagunis (.265) and a RBI double from 1B David Freitas (.261) in the 2nd. 

Pitching Chart: Paul Blackburn (3-1, 1.02 ERA) proved he’s human, allowing four runs on seven hits and walk over six innings. Blackburn entered the game only allowing one earned run over his first 38 innings. He fanned four and allowed his first homer in the 81-pitch outing. Michael Jensen gave up four runs in the final two frames. 

Smokies News:  Tyler Skulina (1-2, 3.94 ERA) gets the start on Thursday night. 

Carolina League—High A—Winston-Salem 5, Myrtle Beach 1

The Dash evened the series with solid pitching and timely hitting.

Hitting Recap: Pelicans only run in the game came on a solo homer by C Cael Brockmeyer, a deep blast to left and his third of the season.CF Rashad Crawford (.261) went 2-for-4 with a double while LF Ian Happ (.287) and 3B Jason Vosler (.324) had the other two base knocks.

Pitching Chart: Zach Hedges (3-3, 1.89 ERA) took the loss despite allowing two runs over six innings on six hits and a walk. He fanned six, throwing 84 pitches, 63 for strikes, and got eight ground ball outs. Daury Torrez worked a scoreless 7th, Jordan Minch allowed two runs in the 8th, and Ryan McNeil tossed a 1-2-3 ninth.

Pelicans News: Trevor Clifton (0-3, 3.91 ERA) takes the mound in the series finale.

Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 2, Dayton 0

Justin Steele and three relievers combined to blank the Dragons and give South Bend the series.

Hitting Recap: 2B Andrew Ely (.301) went 4-for-4 with three doubles and a run scored. 3B Jesse Hodges (.385) added three singles and knocked in a run. LF Eloy Jimenez (.296) gave the Cubs a 1-0 lead in the first with a RBI ground out.

Pitching Chart: Making his sixth start, Justin Steele had his best outing, blanking the Dragons for five innings. The lefty allowed two hits and two walks and matched his season-high with six strikeouts. He threw 64 pitches, 46 for strikes, and had a game score of 67. Kyle Miller held the Dragons scoreless for two frames, Craig Brooks earned his first hold with a scoreless 8th, and James Norwood fanned two in the 9th for this first save,

SB-Cubs News: Kyle Twomey (0-2, 4.85 ERA) gets the start on Thursday night in the series opener at Lansing.
