Myrtle Beach’s Trevor Clifton fanned a career-high 10 Dash hitter over six shutout innings to win his first game of the season.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Nashville 7, Iowa 2

Daniel Vogelbach hit his sixth homer but it wasn’t enough as the Sounds (16-18) downed Iowa (16-16).

Hitting Recap: 1B Daniel Vogelbach (.346) went 2-for-3  and knocked in both runs, one coming on his sixth homer,  a solo shot in the 9th. Vogelbach has an OBP of .438 and is slugging .567 in 30 games. CF Albert Almora (.328) had two singles and scored once. C Miguel Montero was 0-for-3 in his third rehab start and is 2-for-10.

Pitching Chart: Michael Wagner (0-1, 6.08 ERA) made his third start and took the loss, allowing three runs on five hits and four walks over four innings. Armando Rivero surrendered three runs in 1.2 innings, walking the bases full before leaving in the sixth. Jean Machi allowed all three inherited runners to score on a grand slam homer (inside-the-park), the only hit he allowed over 2.1 frames. Brandon Gomes worked a scoreless 9th.

I-Cubs Notes: Ryan Williams (4-1, 3.86 ERA) has established himself as the ace of the Iowa staff and takes the mound for his seventh start as Iowa hosts Nashville in the final game of the series on Friday night......Iowa assigned Miguel Mejia to Tennessee and have placed RHP Stephen Perakslis on the inactive list.....LHP Gerardo Concepcion has earned a promotion to Iowa after 17.2 shutout innings at AA Tennessee. The Cuban fanned 17 and only issued four walks and five hits for a 0.51 WHIP in 10 relief appearances. 

Southern League—AA—Montgomery 5, Tennessee 4

Tennessee (15-19) dropped their fourth straight to the Biscuits (20-13) and the third by walk-off.

Hitting Recap: Tennessee scored three runs in the top of the 9th to force extra innings as C David Freitas (.260), RF Bijan Rademacher (.296) and 2B Ryan Dent (.120) all plated runs. LF Mark Zagunis (.267) smacked his second homer of the year, a solo shot to center in the 5th. Only five hits for the Smokies.

Pitching Chart: RH Tyler Skulina threw 87 pitches over five innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on two walks and four hits, including a pair of homers. Juan Paniagua worked two scoreless frames and David Berg tossed two more shutout innings. Josh Conway (0-4, 6.23 ERA) only got one out in the 9th as three walks and a high-hopper tha was ruled a fielder’s choice, ended the game. 

Smokies News: RH Brad Markey (4-0, 2.67 ERA) makes his sixth start for on Friday night in the series finale in Montgomery........The Smokies have received Miguel Mejia from Iowa and LHP Gerardo Concepcion has been promoted to Iowa.

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 3, Winston-Salem 0

Trevor Clifton fanned a career-high 10 over six shutout innings and Jason Vosler slugged his first homer as the Pelicans (17-15) took the series from the Dash (12-22).

Hitting Recap: 3B Jason Vosler (.333) went 2-for-3 and smacked his first homer, a solo shot in the second. Vosler also added a double and scored twice. The Pelicans were held to five hits but got sacrifice flies from Ian Happ and Daniel Lockhart to plate runs. SS Gleyber Torres went 1-for-4 and is hitting .350 over his last 10 games.

Pitching Chart: Trevor Clifton (1-3, 3.10 ERA) had command over his fastball and a sharp breaking ball as the Tennessee native set a new career-high with 10 strikeouts over six shutout innings. He allowed four hits and didn’t walk a batter in his 95-pitch outing. He finished with a game score of 74. Tommy Thorpe fanned three in 1.2 no-hit innings while James Farris (0.93 ERA) got the final four outs for his sixth save.

Pelicans News: RH Erick Leal (3-2, 4.50 ERA) looks to build on his last start as the 21-year-old gets the ball on Friday night in Frederick.

Midwest League—Low A—Lansing 5, South Bend 0

South Bend (19-13) was held to two hits as the Lugnuts  (17-14) took the series opener.

Hitting Recap: Singles by C P.J. Higgins (.271) and CF Donnie Dewees (.297) was the offense. Dewees swiped second for his 8th stolen base.

Pitching Chart: Kyle Twomey (0-3, 5.23 ERA) gave up two runs in the first and three more in the third as the lefty threw 74 pitches over five innings. He surrendered five hits and walked two. Scott Effross tossed two scoreless frames and Greyfer Eregua pitched a 1-2-3 8th.

SB-Cubs News: Adbert Alzolay (3-0, 2.30 ERA) gets the start on Friday night in Lansing as the Cubs look to even the series.
