Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 3, Nashville 2
Albert Almora’s two-run, two-out double in the bottom of the 9th gave the Cubs the walk-off win.
Hitting Recap: Cubs only had one hit over the first six innings before C Willson Contreras (.340) cut the lead in half with his third homer in the 7th. After the first two hitters were retired in the 9th, 1B Daniel Vogelbach (.336) walked, and pinch-runner Arismendy Alcantara stole second and took third on a throwing error. After C Taylor Davis (.306) walked, CF Albert Almora (.333) doubled to left, scoring both runs and making the Cubs winners. Almora finished 2-for-4 and had the only hit over the first six frames, a triple.
Pitching Chart: Ryan Williams fanned a season-high seven over six innings but didn’t figure in the decision. He allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits and two walks and had a game score of 59 in the 99-pitch outing. Gerardo Concepcion made his AAA debut and it looked a lot like his 17.2 shutout AA innings he threw before being promoted. The left-hander retired all six hitters he faced, three on strikes. Carl Edwards, Jr. (1-0, 2.19 ERA) earned the win, tossing a 1-2-3 ninth with a strikeout.
I-Cubs Notes: Jake Buchanan (2-1, 4.24 ERA) gets the start on Saturday night as the I-Cubs head to Reno for four games.
Southern League—AA—Tennessee 12, Montgomery 5
Tennessee feasted on Biscuits pitching, scoring in seven different innings with a 13-hit attack.
Hitting Recap: Smokies scored a season-high 12 runs as the bottom of the order went 7-for-14 with six RBI. 1B David Freitas (.291) was 3-for-5 and smacked his first homer with the Cubs organization. DH Kelly Dugan (.257) went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and knocked in two runs. Dugan has 15 RBI in 13 games. SS Carlos Penalver (.214) ripped a pair of doubles, scored twice, walked twice and knocked in a pair. RF Billy McKinney (.218) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and CF Jacob Hannemann (.242) knocked in two with a triple.
Pitching Chart: Brad Markey only lasted four innings, throwing 77 pitches as the right-hander finished with a line of 5 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 3 K. RH Starling Peralta (2-1, 3.38 ERA) earned the win, blanking the Biscuits for three innings. RH Miguel Mejia tossed a scoreless 8th and RH David Garner allowed three runs in the 9th.

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 8, Frederick 3
Pelicans (18-15) smacked three homers and took the opener at Frederick (15-19).
Hitting Recap: 1B Yasiel Balaguert (.242), LF Charcer Burks (.186) and SS Gleyber Torres (.237) all homered in the win. Balaguert launched a two-run homer in the first and Burks matched that with a two-run shot in the second. Torres added a three-run bomb in the 7th. Burks added a double and 3B Jason Vosler was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and a walk. DH Gioskar Amaya (.200) and CF Trey Martin (.125) both had two hits.
Pitching Chart: Erick Leal (4-2, 3.94 ERA) became the first Pelicans starter to work into the 8th, finishing with a line of 7.2 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 0 BB 3 K. The right-hander threw 86 pitches, 67 for strikes, and had a game score of 60. LH Jordan Minch got the final out of the 8th and RH Jose Rosario worked a scoreless ninth.

Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 15, Lansing 2
Every starter scored at least once as South Bend (19-13) used an eight-run 8th to even the series with the Lugnuts (17-14).
Hitting Recap: CF Donnie Dewees (.315) led the offensive onslaught with a career-high six RBI, going 4-for-6 with a double and a triple, his seventh of the season. He also swiped his ninth base. DH Tyler Alamo (.333) was 3-for-5 with two runs scored and a RBI while LF Eloy Jimenez (.295) double, smacked his second homer and knocked in a pair. C P.J. Higgins (.273) and 3B Jesse Hodges (.333) both plated two runs while 2B Sutton Whiting (.208) and SS Bryant Flete (.255) both scored three times.
Pitching Chart: Adbert Alzolay gave up two runs in the third with two outs but that would be all the Lugnuts would get from the right-hander. He worked six innings, allowing five hits and three walks in the 87-pitch outing. He didn’t strike anyone out and had a game score of 51. RH Casey Bloomquist continues to impress out of the bullpen as the Cubs 17th round pick last June retired all nine hitters he faced, for his third save. He set a new career-high with seven punchouts, including six straight.
