Iowa and Myrtle Beach had their best offensive nights of the season and South Bend made it two straight over Lansing.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 17, Reno 2

Iowa recorded season highs in hits (19) and runs and beat Reno in the opener.

Hitting Recap: Lots of hitting starts in this one. 2B Arismendy Alcantara (.272) was on base six times with three walks and three hits, including a three-run homer in the second, his fifth. C Willson Contreras (.342) was 2-for-5 with three knocked in while LF John Andreoli (.211) had three hits, scored twice and added a RBI. CF Albert Almora (.341) went 3-for-6 with two RBI and SS Munenori Kawasaki (.277) was 3-for-5 with three runs scored. 3B Kris Negron (.286) launched a solo shot in the 8th and finished 1-for-5 with three RBI.

Pitching Chart: Jake Buchanan (3-1, 3.86 ERA) tossed a season-high seven innings and fanned five. The right-hander allowed two runs on seven hits and one walk in the 93-pitch outing. C.J. Riefenhauser and Giovanni Soto both tossed a scoreless frame.

I-Cubs Notes: No starter has been announced for Sunday’s game.

Southern League—AA— Birmingham 11, Tennessee 1

The Barons scored early and often to take the series open at Smokies Stadium.

Hitting Recap: Smokies only run scored in the 4th when 1B Victor Caratini (.273) and DH Kelly Dugan (.256) ripped back-to-back, two-out doubles. Smokies were held to five hits.

Pitching Chart: Rob Zastryzny (2-2, 4.02 ERA) got charged with five unearned runs as the left-hander only allowed three hits over six innings. He walked four and fanned five for a game score of 59 in the 94-pitch outing. Michael Jensen gave up two homers and six runs over 2.2 innings and Josh Conway got the final out in the 8th but allowed two inherited runners to score as he walked three.

Smokies News: Duane Underwood (0-1, 3.86 ERA) takes the mound for his fourth start after beginning the season at extended spring training rehabbing an elbow injury.

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 11, Frederick 3

The Pelicans scored eight times in the 5th and beat Frederick for the second straight game.

Hitting Recap: Pelicans had a season high in hits (14) and runs as 1B Yasiel Balaguert (.263) homered (5) for the second straight day and finished 4-for-5 with three knocked in. Balaguert leads the Pelicans with 27 RBI. LF Shawon Dunston (.247) was 3-for-4 with two runs scored while DH Daniel Lockhart (.254) had two hits, scored twice and knocked in a pair. SS Gleyber Torres was 2-for-5 with two driven in while RF Rashad Crawford (.247) had two RBI.

Pitching Chart: Jeremy Null (1-0, 0.00 ERA) was impressive in his first start of the year, holding the Keys to three hits and a walk over five innings. Null threw 77 pitches, 52 for strikes, and fanned three. James Pugliese allowed a run over two innings and Daury Torrez gave up two unearned runs over the final two frames.

Pelicans News: Jake Stinnett (2-0, 2.93 ERA) climbs the hill for the sixth time in Frederick on Sunday afternoon. Stinnett leads the Carolina League with a 0.90 WHIP and  is 8th in ERA.....RHP Michael Wagner has been assigned to Myrtle Beach.

Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 6, Lansing 2

South Bend scored five times in the 4th and beat Lansing for the second straight game. 

Hitting Recap: Six singles, a wild pitch, and a sacrifice fly plated five runs for the Cubs in the fourth. 1B Tyler Alamo (.329), C Ian Rice (.400), CF Donnie Dewees (.313) and DH P.J. Higgins (.269) all drove in runs in the 4th. RF Eloy Jimenez (.307) and Rice both finished with three hits as the Cubs collected 14 base knocks and drew six walks.

Pitching Chart: Preston Morrison blanked the Lugnuts for five innings and gave up two runs in the 6th, finishing with a line of 5.1 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 5 K. The right-hander threw 85 pitches, 57 for strikes, and had a game score of 56. RH Craig Brooks allowed one inherited runner to score in the sixth and didn’t allow a hit in 1.2 innings. LH John Williamson fanned one in .2 innings and James Norwood earned his second save, getting the final four outs.
