Pacific Coast League—AAA—Tacoma 9, Iowa 4
Tacoma (25-16) scored all the runs they needed with five in the first inning to beat Iowa (18-21).
Hitting Recap: Iowa out-hit Tacoma 12-11 but could only muster four runs. LF John Andreoli (.217) led off the game with a homer and finished 2-for-5. 1B Taylor Davis (.340) and 3B Kris Negron (.291) both had three hits while SS Munenori Kawasaki (.260), RF Juan Perez (.284) and C Willson Contreras (.331) all plated runs. CF Albert Almora (.322) had his 14-game hitting streak snapped, going 0-5.
Pitching Chart: Jake Buchanan (3-2, 5.60 ERA) got roughed up for nine runs on 10 hits and two walks over five innings. He fanned two in the 95-pitch outing and had a game score of 11. Jean Machi allowed all three inherited runners to score in the sixth and Armando Riverofanned five in two scoreless frames.
I-Cubs Notes: RHP Ryan Williams has been placed on the 7-day disabled list. No news on the extent of the injury but according to Tommy Birch of the Des Moines Register is not expected to be serious. Already using 11 different starters, Williams is tied for the team lead with Drew Rucinski in innings (43.2) and games started (8)..... Alex Sanabia makes his second start for Iowa on Saturday night. Signed as a free agent after being released by Tijuana of the Mexican League, the right-hander gave up seven runs in 1.1 innings in his first start for Iowa against Reno......OF Ryan Kalish, who was recently cleared waivers and was optioned back to Iowa, was placed the DL with an appendicitis and OF Matt Murton was activated off the DL. OF Shane Victorino was placed on the temporary inactive list.......The I-Cubs have received IF David Bote from Myrtle Beach.
Southern League—AA—Tennessee vs. Biloxi—Postponed
Friday night’s game was postponed due to rain and will be made up as a double-header on Sunday. Duane Underwood (0-1, 4.76 ERA) is expected to get the start on Saturday. Paul Blackburn (3-1, 1.08 ERA) and Tyler Skulina (2-2, 3.76 ERA) are set to start the twin-bill.
Carolina League—High A— Lynchburg 5, Myrtle Beach 3
Lynchburg scored three runs in the top of the 9th to take the opener at Myrtle Beach.
Hitting Recap: Ian Happ (.274) made his fourth start in left and scored the Pelicans first run with a triple to lead off the 4th. He then scored on a wild pitch. The Pelicans weren’t done in the 4th adding two more runs on C Gioskar Amaya’s two-run single, scoring RF Jeffrey Baez (.229. 1-2, 2 BB) and Daniel Lockhart (.286, 1-4). Happ and Amaya (.214) both finished 2-for-4.
Pitching Chart: Jeremy Null looked really good, working into the 6th and leaving without a run on the scoreboard. He got charged with one run on two hits and five walks, fanning six in the 85-pitch outing. He had a game score of 61 in his second start. Tommy Thorpe gave up a sacrifice fly in the 6th and a solo homer in the 7th, fanning three in 1.2 innings of relief. James Farris (0-1, 2.42 ERA) blew his first save in eight opportunities, surrendering three runs on four hits in the 9th.
Pelicans News: Jake Stinnett (3-0, 2.94 ERA) makes his eighth start on Saturday night against Lynchburg......Pelicans Broadcaster John Vittas tweeted out a picture of Dillon Maples throwing a simulated game as he comes back from an injury. Maples was placed on the DL after leaving his season debut on April 8 after facing four hitters.
Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 7, Lake County 5—10 innings
Matt Rose blasted a two-run homer in the top of the 10th as South Bend moved into a first-place tie with the Captains.
Hitting Recap: Cubs took a 1-0 lead in the second on Bryant Flete’s RBI double with two outs. 2B Andrew Ely (.304) has been as hot as any hitter in the Cubs lineup as the second baseman connected for his first homer of the year in the 5th, a two-run shot that gave SB a 3-2 lead. Ely entered the game 13-for-his-last-31 and finished 2-for-5. Eloy Jimenez gave the Cubs a 4-3 lead in the 8th on his fifth homer of the year, a solo shot, and third in lats two games. Jimenez went 2-for-5 to extend his hitting streak to seven and it was his third straight multi-hit game. 3B Matt Rose (.133) has been in a terrible slump with only one hit in his lsat nine games before Friday night. He laid down a sacrifice bunt that scored a run in the 8th and then delivered a two-run blast in the 10th to give the Cubs the win. DH Daniel Spingola (.327) went 2-for-3 with a run scored.
Pitching Chart: Adbert Alzolay twirled six solid innings, holding the Captains to four hits and a walk while striking out two. He retired 11 straight after a RBI double in 2nd, and had a game score of 57 in the 86-pitch outing. Greyfer Eregua got tagged for a solo homer to lead off the 7th and tie the game. He then set down the next six hitters, the final two on strikes. Craig Brooks was looking to convert his third straight save opportunity but four singles tied the game at 5-5. Brooks got the next two hitters to send the game onto extra innings. James Norwood worked a scoreless 10th for his fourth save.
SB-Cubs News: Ryan Kellogg (2-3, 4.50 ERA) takes the mound in the second game of the series on Saturday night......Great Lakes broadcaster Christopher Vosters reported Eloy Jimenez’ first homer traveled 422 feet with a exit speed of 109 MPH. The second blast went 399 feet at 112 MPH. That’s serious power. After 10 games on the road trip, Jimenez is hitting .410 with three HR, seven runs scored and seven RBI.
Cubs add Sarianides
The Cubs have signed relief pitcher Nick Sarianides to a minor league deal and assigned him to extended spring training. According to Arizona Phil from The Cubs Reporter, the 26-year-old right-hander threw a perfect inning of relief on May 18 in an extended spring game. A 29th round pick of Cleveland back in 2009, he spent three season in the Indians organization before released. Pitching in the Independent Leagues for two years, he returned to the minors in 2014 as the Diamondbacks signed the right-hander and he appeared in 20 games for South Bend. Last season, Sarianides went 1-4 with 91 K in 55.1 innings while recording 28 saves for High A Visalia. He appeared in eight games for AA Mobile (0-0, 3.65 ERA, 12.1 IP, 11 BB, 5 K) before being released on May 5.null
