Hitting Recap: Cubs only run of the game came in the second when 2B Arismendy Alcantara (.257) led off with a triple and scored when 3B Logan Watkins (.196) grounded out. Watkins added and C Taylor Davis (.333) both doubled.
Pitching Chart: Jake Buchanan (3-3, 5.58 ERA) gave up nine hits over five innings, including a homer as the Chihuahuas scored six runs, only three earned. He walked one, fanned four and threw 91 pitches. Game score 34. Armando Rivero fanned four in two scoreless frames and Giovanni Soto surrendered three runs in the ninth, his second inning.
I-Cubs Notes: Alex Sanabia (0-1, 20.65 ERA) makes his third start for the I-Cubs in another day game at Principal Park.
Southern League—AA— Chattanooga (Twins) 6, Tennessee 2

Hitting Recap: 3B Jeimer Candelario (.239) ripped his league-leading 16th double in the second and scored on a sacrifice fly from C Victor Caratini (.275). Candelario is slowly bringing up his average—hitting .375 over his last 10 games entering play (15-for-40). He went 2-for-4 and added another double. LF Billy McKinney (.229) was 0-for-3 but knocked in run with a sacrifice fly in the 7th.
Pitching Chart: After making three spot starts for Iowa earlier this year, Stephen Perakslis was in the same role on Wednesday night for the Smokies. Perakslis retired the first six hitters but the first four hitters of the 3rd reached, two scoring on a RBI double with another crossing home on a triple. After an error earlier in the inning, Perakslis got some help as Billy McKinney, playing his first game in left, gunned down a runner trying to score on a fly ball. Perakslis finished the game with a line of 4 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 3 K. RH Jose Rosario made his AA debut and set the Lookouts down in order in the 5th but gave up two runs in the 6th on three hits. RH David Garner allowed a run over the final two innings.
Smokies News: Duane Underwood (0-1, 4.91 ERA) gets the start on Thursday night in Chattanooga as the Smokies look to even the series.....The Cubs have promoted RHP Jose Rosario from Myrtle Beach to Tennessee. Rosario missed all of the 2015 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery. His first appearance with the Pelicans came in the club's season-opening series against Frederick, with Rosario coming into the game on April 10 with the bases loaded and two outs to earn the save—his first since July 24, 2011. He made 12 appearances to go 1-0 with a 1.65 ERA, struck out 14, and walked eight in 16.1 innings. Rosario’s fastball was clocked in the upper 90s while in Myrtle Beach.
Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 6, Carolina (Braves) 2
Erick Leal tossed seven solid innings as the Pelicans won the series opener over the Mudcats
Hitting Recap: DH Gleyber Torres (.256) started the scoring in the four-run first with a solo homer, his fifth of the season. After a terrible start, Torres is driving the ball to all fields and hitting over .300 in his last 28 games 34-110, 4HR. He finished 3-for-5. 3B Jason Vosler (.285) plated a run with double while SS Daniel Lockhart (sac fly) and RF Trey Martin (single) knocked in runs in the first. LF Charcer Burks (.203) smacked his 4th homer leading off the 7th and Martin (.167) added another RBI with a double in the 8th. Martin and Burks both finished with two hits.
Pitching Chart: Erick Leal (6-2, 3.71 ERA) retired the first eight hitters of the game before a single ended the streak. The 21-year-old Venezuelan is one of the most athletic pitchers in the system and does a good job of staying on top of the ball and getting good downhill run on his fastball. Leal got in trouble in the 5th as the first two hitters reached on a walk and a single. A fly ball moved the runners over and a fly to left plated the first run. A single scored the second run but the inning ended when RF Trey Martin threw out the hitter at second. Leal tossed two shutout frames and ended his night after walking the leadoff hitter in the 8th. He finished with a line of 7 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 5 K in the 93-pitch outing. Game score 62. James Pugliese stranded the inherited runner in the 8th but allowed the first two hitters of the 9th to reach. LH Jordan Minch walked a batter to load the bases but got the final three outs for his first save in the Carolina League.
Pelicans News: Jeremy Null (1-0, 0.75 WHIP) makes his third start for the Pelicans on Thursday night against Carolina.....RHP Daniel Lewis has been assigned to Myrtle Beach from extended spring training. Lewis, a native of Newport, N.C., pitched in 24 games for Low-A South Bend in 2015. The 25-year-old went 0-2 with a 3.68 ERA covering 36.2 innings. He was originally signed by the Cubs as a non-drafted free agent on July 11, 2014 out of Pensacola State College.
Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 10, Great Lakes (Dodgers) 5
South Bend (28-16) made it six straight with a 12-hit attack against the Loons (19-25).
Hitting Recap: Hitting has been contagious for the SB-Cubs. C Ian Rice slugged his first homer, a two-run shot that tied the game at 3-3. He added a RBI single and is hitting .341. 3B Jesse Hodges (.325) delivered a bases-clearing three-run double in the Cubs five-run third. He finished 2-for-4. DH Eloy Jimenez (.335) extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a double in the first inning. The 19-year-old leads MWL in SLG (.551), total bases (92), and hits (56). LF Daniel Spingola (.319), CF Donnie Dewees (.290) and RF Eddy Martinez (.229) all recorded two hits.
Pitching Chart: Kyle Twomey (1-3, 5.05 ERA) allowed a two-out first-inning solo homer on a 1-2 curve ball to Edwin Rios (3) and a two-run shot to Cristian Gomez (1) with two outs in the second. Despite the early trouble, the left-hander went five innings to earn his first win. He allowed four runs on five hits and five walks in the 91-pitch outing. Twomey finished with six strikeouts and had a game score of 42. RH Craig Brooks (12 G, 2.00 ERA, 18 IP, 14 BB, 25 K, 2 SV) surrendered a RBI double to allow an inherited runner to score and threw two scoreless innings. Not the best command for Brooks as he needed 43 pitches to get six outs. RH Scott Effross (13 G, 3.92 ERA, 20.2 IP, 7 BB, 23K,) extended his scoreless streak to 12.1 innings, blanking the Loons the final two innings.
SB-Cubs News: Cubs will be heading to the park in the early morning for the second straight day and send Adbert Alzolay (4-0, 2.52 ERA) to the mound.....Bad outings are never more exemplified than at the start of the season when double-digit numbers can show up for ERAs. After allowing eight runs on April 14, Justin Steele’s dropped his ERA over six points and while 6.19 is still kinda gaudy, its headed in the right direction. In his last three starts, the 20-year-old has gone at least five innings in each outing and sports a 3.24 ERA and a .169 BAA in 16.2 innings. He’s fanned 17 but issued 11 walks to the 72 hitters he faced.
