David Freitas knocked in four runs as Tennessee was the only affiliate to win on Thursday. South Bend had their six-game win streak snapped.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—El Paso (Rockies) 6, Iowa 3—12 innings

The Chihuahuas (25-21) scored three times in the top of the 12th to hand Iowa (19-26) their ninth loss in ten games. 

Hitting Recap: Back-to-back doubles from C Willson Contreras (.320) and 1B Daniel Vogelbach (.313) scored Iowa’s first run and before the frame was over, Vogelbach crossed home on a balk. A throwing error in the bottom of the 8th allowed SS Munenori Kawasaki (.237) to score and tie the game at 3-3. Vogelbach finished 2-for-4 and CF Juan Perez (.278) had two hits and a walk. 

Pitching Chart: Alex Sanabia had his best outing as a Cub, allowing two runs over 5.2 innings. He surrendered four hits, a walk, and fanned two as both runs were solo homers. Felix Pena worked 1.1 scoreless frames and Gerardo Concepcion’s scoreless streak came to end at 31.1 innings (dated back to last season) as El Paso scored on a walk and two hits in the 8th. Carl Edwards, Jr. tossed two shutout innings but Brandon Gomes, walked four and allowed three runs on a hit in the 12th. Jean Machi got the final out of the 12th.

I-Cubs Notes: Drew Rucinski (2-4, 6.75 ERA, 46.2 IP, 14 BB, 37 K, 1.54 WHIP, .301 BAA) makes his team-high 10th start on Friday night as the I-Cubs host Albuquerque (Rockies)...LH C.J. Riefenhauser has cleared waivers from the Chicago Cubs 40-man roster and been assigned to Iowa. The Cubs 40-man roster is now at 37. Riefenhauser  (1-0, 7.30 ERA) was claimed off waivers from Baltimore in February and has appeared in 15 games for the I-Cubs, allowing 10 runs on eight hits and eight walks in 12.1 innings. 

Southern League—AA—Tennessee 7, Chattanooga (Twins) 4

David Freitas was a double shy of the cycle as the Smokies evened the series with the Lookouts.

Hitting Recap: Jacob Hannemann is showing some of the power the Cubs thought he would produce when they took the raw outfielder in the third round in 2013 out of BYU. After only hitting six homers in over 500 plate appearances last season, the 25-year-old lined his fifth homer over the right field wall in the third to give the Smokies a 3-2 lead. He leads the Smokies with 69 total bases and is hitting .222/.315/.392. 1B David Freitas made it 5-2 with a two-run triple in the four-run 3rd and added a two-run homer (2) in the 8th. He finished 3-for-4.....DH Chesny Young (.316) went 2-for-5 and leads the team with 16 multi-hit games.

Pitching Chart: Duane Underwood’s evening got off to an inauspicious start as the leadoff hitter smashed a homer over the right-field wall.  A walk, a stolen base and a RBI single made it 2-0. The Lookouts added a run in the third and did a good job of running up the pitch count, needing  83 pitches to get through the first four frames. Underwood was hitting the mid-90s on the gun with his fastball. He finished with alien of 4 IP, 7 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 3 K, game score 37.....RH Juan Paniagua (2-2, 1.27 ERA) tossed a scoreless 5th and got help from RF Billy McKinney with a nice running catch down the line to end the 6th with two on.....RH David Berg got the first two outs of the 7th but three straight hits cut the lead to 5-4. The side-winder worked a 1-2-3 8th. It wasn’t easy for Corey Black’s sixth save in the 9th as he walked the first two hitters. A base hit and a fielder’s choice cut the lead to 7-6 but Victor Caratini threw out a would-be base stealer at second to end the game. 

Smokies News: RH Paul Blackburn (3-1, 0.96 ERA, 9 GS, 56 IP, 11 BB, 30 K, 0.89 WHIP, .202 BAA) takes the hill on Friday night in Chattanooga

Carolina League—High A—Carolina (Braves) 10, Myrtle Beach 2

Carolina avoided the sweep as they battered four Pelicans’ pitchers for 14 hits.

Hitting Recap: 3B Jason Vosler (.290) ripped a two-run double in the 4th to tie the game but that would be all the offense for the Pelicans as they were held to four hits. Vosler finished 2-for-4 while 2B Daniel Lockhart (.261) and 1B Yasiel Balaguert (.249) both singled. DH Ian Happ (.277) walked twice and scored a run.

Pitching Chart: A tough-luck first inning for starter Jeremy Null as four straight singles (none hit hard) plated a run and a sacrifice fly made it 2-0. The right-hander blanked the Mudcats until the 6th, when they unleashed four hits, scoring three times and ending Null’s night after 89 pitches, 58 for strikes. He finished with a line of 5.2 IP, 10 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 1 BB, 1 K, game score 29.....RH Daniel Lewis made his Carolina League debut, ending the 6th with a strikeout. The 7th started with a ground that appeared to be foul be was called fair and went for a double. A hit-by-pitch and a walk loaded the bases. Three straight singles and two sacrifice flies plated five runs and chased Lewis (1 IP, 4 H, 5 ER, 1 BB, 1 K)......Seeing his first action since April 8, Dillon Maples returned to the mound and needed two pitches to get a fly out to left to end the 7th. In the 8th, Maples walked the leadoff hitter and then uncorked a wild pitch. Two groundouts and another walk ended his night after 26 pitches, 12 for strikes......RB Ryan McNeil needed one pitch to get a groundout and end the 8th. 

Pelicans News: Myrtle Beach kicks-off Memorial Day weekend with an early start on Friday and send their ace, Jake Stinnett (4-0, 3.18 ERA, 7 GS, 39.2 IP, 17 BB, 32 K, 1.06 WHIP, .184 BAA) to the mound as the Pelicans get their second look at Wilmington (Royals).....The Smokies have placed RHP James Pugliese on the disabled list and activated RHP Dillon Maples. Pugliese has pitched in eight games with Myrtle Beach this season, going 0-2 with a 6.43 ERA. The right-hander has fanned 14 against five walks in 14.0 innings. He had a 2.62 ERA in in 55.0 frames for the Pelicans in 2015. Maples recorded one out on April 8 before leaving with an injury. The right-hander pitched with Short Season Class A Eugene and Low-A South Bend in 2015, recording a 1-2 record and 4.58 ERA between the two clubs. He punched out 27 against 13 walks in 35.1 innings.

Midwest League—Low A— Great Lakes (Dodgers) 9, South Bend 4

Great Lakes (20-25) salvaged the last game of the series and snapped the Cubs (28-17) six-game wining streak.

Hitting Recap: LF Eloy Jimenez (.335) extended his hit streak to 13 games with a two-run double in the 7th. He finished 1-for-3 with a walk. C P.J. Higgins doubled (12), walked twice and leads the MWL with 31 free passes. SS Bryant Flete was on base three times with a walk and two singles, one plating a run. RF Eddy Martinez (.229) and DH Ian Rice (.333) both doubled. 

Pitching Chart: Adbert Alzolay only allowed five hits over five innings but four of them went for extra bases, including a pair of homers by DH Ariel Sandoval He fanned four and walked one in the 82-pitch start. John Williamson surrendered three runs on four hits over two innings and Greyfer Eregua fanned four but gave up a two-run homer in the 9th. 

SB-Cubs News: Lansing (24-20) comes to town and the Cubs send Ryan Kellogg (2-3, 4.83 ERA) to the mound. South Bend has four left-handers in the rotation— Rob Zastryzny (Iowa) is the only other left-hander currently starting in the Cubs system.
