Tyler Alamo knocked in three runs as South Bend won again while Iowa’s Drew Rucinski flirted with a perfect game, tossing an eight-inning gem.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 6, Albuquerque (Rockies) 1

Drew Rucinski tossed eight strong innings while Willson Contreras and David Bote homered as Iowa (20-26) defeated the Isotopes (22-26) in the series opener.

Hitting Recap: 3B David Bote (.364) made the most of his first AAA start of the season, smacking a solo homer in the 7th and added a  RBI in the second. C Willson Contreras (.316) slugged his sixth homer, a two-run shot in the 7th. LF Matt Murton (.295) was 3-for-4 with a RBI while CF Albert Almora (.320) doubled in four at-bats. 

Pitching Chart: RH Drew Rucinski (3-4, 5.93 ERA) turned in his best performance since joining the Cubs organization, allowing a run on three hits and walk over eight innings. Rucinski retired the first 20 hitters he faced, fanning four in the 97-pitch performance. Game score 75. Spencer Patton worked a 1-2-3 9th. 

I-Cubs Notes: Iowa has not named a starter for Saturday night......C David Freitas has been promoted to Iowa from Tennessee. Iowa placed C Taylor Davis on the DL.

Southern League—AA— Chattanooga 6, Tennessee 5—11 innings

The Lookouts (21-27) delivered a walk-off single in the bottom of the 11th to beat the Smokies (22-26).

Hitting Recap: Smokies tied the game at 5-5 in the 8th when SS Carlos Penalver (.236) singled with two outs, took second on a wild pitch and crossed home when 2B Chesny Young (.322) delivered a RBI single. 3B Jeimer Candelario (.244) and LF Billy McKinney (.245) plated runs in the fifth, DH Stephen Bruno (.158) had a RBI single in the 2nd and 1B Benjamin Carhart (.200)  added a RBI groundout in the 4th. Young finished 3-for-5 while CF Jacob Hannemann (.227), Candelario and McKinney all had two hits.

Pitching Chart: Paul Blackburn gave up a season-high five earned runs, four coming on a third-inning grand slam. He threw 94 pitches (53 for strikes) in five innings, allowing six hits and three walks with two strikeouts. Game score 34......RH Starling Peralta kept the Lookouts in check for two innings, recording two punchouts, and Josh Conway added two more shutout frames. Miguel Mejia (0-2, 4.15 ERA) worked a scoreless 11th but a walk, stolen base and a single ended the game.

Smokies News: Tyler Skulina (2-2, 4.14 ERA) takes the mound on Saturday night in Chattanooga....Smokies are 6-15 in one run games and have been walked-off six times.......C Cael Brockmeyer has been promoted from Myrtle Beach. Brockmeyer had reached in 15 of his previous 16 games at the time of the promotion. In 24 games this year for the Pelicans, he is hitting .190/.293/.367 with four home runs and 12 RBIs. The Cal State Bakersfield product played at four different levels in 2015, hitting .217/.324/.342 with three homers and 24 RBIs on Myrtle Beach's 2015 Carolina League championship squad.

Carolina League—High A—Wilmington (Royals) 3 Myrtle Beach 1

Three Wilmington (15-31) pitchers held the Pelicans (26-21) to three singles to take the series opener.

Hitting Recap: Myrtle Beach scored in the sixth when three walks loaded the bases and 2B Ian Happ (.274) scored on Shawon Dunston’s groundout. Happ (.274) extended his on-base streak to 15 games with a pair of walks......SS Gleyber Torres (.251), C Erick Castillo (.250) and RF Trey Martin  (.171) all singled.

Pitching Chart: Jake Stinnett (4-1, 3.09 ERA) retired last 11 hitters he faced. But the Blue Rock plated three runs over the first four innings. Stinnett lost for the first time and tossed a season-high seven innings with 5 H, 3 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 94 pitches, game score 60. Daury Torrez was perfect over the final two innings, recording two strikeouts in the 21-pitch outing.

Pelicans News: Jonathan Martinez (3-2, 3.35 ERA) gets the ball on Saturday night against Wilmington....The Pelicans sent C Cael Brockmeyerto Tennessee and activated C Erick Castillo from the disabled list. Castillo just completed his second DL stint with the Pelicans this season. The Venezuelan native played in three games with Low-A South Bend in 2016, going 0-for-8 with a walk. Last season, he batted .219/.247/.248 with four doubles and 13 RBIs between South Bend and Tennessee.

Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 4, Lansing (Blue Jays) 2

Tyler Alamo knocked in three runs and Preston Morrison tossed three innings of shutout relief as first-place South Bend (29-17) won for the seventh time in eight games. 

Hitting Recap: LF Eloy Jimenez extended his hitting streak to 14 games and knocked in the first run of the game with a RBI (31) single in the first. He finished 2-for-4 and is hitting .339/.381/.552 with 7 HR and 31 RBI......1B Tyler Alamo (.299/.39/.402) ripped a run-scoring single in the first and then delivered a two-run double in the 7th. Alamo has 25 RBI, third on the team...... 3B Matt Rose (.174) went 3-for-4 and DH Ian Rice (.354) had two hits and scored twice...... CF Donnie Dewees (.280/.342/.457) extended his on-base streak to 17 games with walk to leadoff the 7th.  

Pitching Chart: Ryan Kellogg matched his career-high with eight strikeouts but didn’t figure in the decision, leaving with game tied at 2-2. The left-hander gave up a run in the second and a solo homer in the 6th, allowing five hits and a walk in the 92-pitch outing, a career-high. Game score 61. Casey Bloomquist (3-1, 2.91 ERA) was perfect, retiring all nine hitters he faced, three on strikes. The right-hander only needed 30 pitches.

SB-Cubs News: Preston Morrison (3-2, 3.96 ERA, 36.1 IP, 13 BB, 32 K, 1.49 WHIP, .283 BAA) toes the rubber for his eighth start.
