Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 4, Albuquerque 3
Hitting Recap: Pinch-hitter Juan Perez (.275) delivered an infield hit to third base and LF Matt Murton (.286) beat the throw home to make the I-Cubs winners. Singles by Murton, 2B Logan Watkins (.216) and 3B David Bote (.400) set the table for Perez. Trailing 3-0 after the first, CF John Andreoli (.214) cut into the lead with a solo homer in the 3rd. Andreoli doubled in the 6th and scored when C Willson Contreras (.314) followed with a double. With one out in the the 7th, Watkins tripled and scored on Bote’s RBI single to right to tie the game at 3-3. Watkins finished 3-for-5 while Andreoli and Bote both had two hits.
Pitching Chart: Returning to Iowa for the second time and activated of the DL earlier in the day, Michael Wagner took the mound for his 4th start for the I-Cubs. Working into the 5th, Wagner didn’t figure in the decision, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits and two walks. Game score of 44 in the 79-pitch outing..... RH Jean Machi tossed 2.1 shutout frames while Giovanni Soto and Spencer Patton both kept the Isotopes off the board in their inning. Armando Rivero (3-1, 3.18 ERA) added two more shutout relief innings, including fanning the side in the 11th.
I-Cubs Notes: No starter has been named for Sunday but its Rob Zastryzny’s turn in the rotation......According to Tommy Birch of the Des Moines Register, Stephen Fife missed his start on Saturday with an injury. No update on the extent of injury......RHP Michael Wagner was assigned to Iowa from Myrtle Beach, his second stint with the I-Cubs.
Southern League—AA— Chattanooga 3, Tennessee 2
The Lookouts scored two runs in the bottom of the 8th as Tennessee dropped another one-run game.
Hitting Recap: Smokies took a 1-0 lead in the 5th. RF Billy McKinney (.245) led off with a single, 1B Bijan Rademacher (.298) followed with a walk, and a single by C Benjamin Carhart (.217) loaded the bases. DH Kelly Dugan (.224) grounded into a double play but McKinney scored to tie the game. Smokies took a 2-1 lead in the 6th when RF Mark Zagunis (.289) launched his sixth homer.
Pitching Chart: Tyler Skulina turned in a quality start, holding the Lookouts to one run on five hits and three walks over six innings. He threw 85 pitches, 54 for strikes, and had a game score of 58. David Garner (1-4, 6.04 ERA) worked a 1-2-3 7th but a walk and back-to-back doubles to start the 8th gave the Lookouts the lead.
Smokies News: Brad Markey (4-1, 2.64 ERA) makes his ninth start on Sunday evening at Chattanooga.
Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach vs. Wilmington (Royals)
With tropical storm Bonnie wreaking havoc on the South Carolina coast, Saturday night’s game was rained out. They will try to complete a double-header on Sunday with first pitch at 2:05 EST. Jonathan Martinez (3-2, 3.35 ERA) and Zach Hedges (4-4, 2.70 ERA) will start the DH for the Pelicans.......The Pelicans activated RHP Michael Wagner off the DL and assigned him to AAA Iowa.
Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 17, Lansing 3
Ian Rice slugged two homers and knocked in five as South Bend (30-17) reached season highs in runs and hits (19).
Hitting Recap: Every starter had at least one hit and the Cubs tallied a season-high with 17 runs. SS Andrew Ely (.318), RF Daniel Spingola (.331), C Ian Rice (.385) and 2B Sutton Whiting (.242) all recorded three hits. Rice, a 29th round pick last June out of the University of Houston, smacked two homers and finished his best game as a pro 3-for-4 with three runs scored and five knocked in. LF Eloy Jimenez (.341) extended his hit streak to 15 games, going 2-for-5 with two RBI (33). DH Donnie Dewees (.283) upped his on-base streak to 18 games with two hits and walk. He also knocked in his 33rd RBI. Spingola scored twice, drew a walk, and plated a pair. Tyler Alamo (.295) had two RBI, CF Eddy Martinez (.227) went 1-for- 2 with three walks and three runs scored, and Ely finished with three runs scored and one RBI.
Pitching Chart: RH Preston Morrison (4-2, 4.14 ERA) retired 12 straight at one point but gave up his first two homers of the season, one leading off the game. Morrison threw 89 pitches (49 for strikes), had a game score of 52 and finished with a line of 5 IP, 3 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 6 K. RH Pedro Araujo was perfect is his MWL debut, fanning three of the six hitters he faced. RH Kyle Miller and RH James Norwood both tossed a scoreless frame.
SB-Cubs News: Carson Sands (5-0, 3.38 ERA) gets the start on Sunday night against Lansing.....LHP John Williamson was placed on the disabled list and RHP Pedro Araujo was assigned to South Bend from extended spring training. Williamson, the Cubs 23rd round pick out of Rice last June, appeared in 11 games for the Cubs (0-0, 4.15 ERA, 17.1 IP, 10 BB, 14 K, 1.62 WHIP, .273 BAA). The 22-year-old Araujo was a Northwest League All-Star last season for Eugene, posting a 2.68 ERA over 50.1 innings (21 games). He fanned 70 and only walked nine for a 1.03 WHIP.
