Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 6, Albuquerque 4
Iowa (22-26) scored four times in the bottom of the 8th to rally for their third straight win over the Isotopes (22-28).
Hitting Recap: RBI by Matt Murton (.321), CF Juan Perez (.266) and 3B Logan Watkins (.220), along with passed ball, gave Iowa the four runs in the 8th. RF John Andreoli (.221) led off the frames with a single and SS Munenori Kawasaki (.229) followed with a hit. Murton made it three straight hits plating Andreoli, and after 1B Daniel Vogelbach (.299) walked, Perez ground into a force play, scoring another run. Murton crossed home on a passed ball and Watkins added an insurance run with a RBI single to left. Vogelbach delivered a RBI double in the 4th and a sacrifice fly from C David Freitas plated a run in the 5th. Murton collected his second three-hit game of the series while Andreoli was 2-for-4. C Willson Contreras and his eight-game hitting streak had the day off. He’s reached base in 38 of the 41 games this year.
Pitching Chart: Making his second AAA start, Rob Zastryzny gave up a two-run homer in the 4th and a RBI double in the 5th, throwing 85 pitches over five innings. The lefty allowed six hits and a walk to go along with four strikeouts. Game score 46. RH Brandon Gomes fired two shutout frames and LH Gerardo Concepcion earned his first AAA win despite allowing a run in the 8th.
I-Cubs Notes: Jake Buchanan (3-3, 5.58 ERA) gets the start on Monday afternoon as the I-Cubs go for the sweep at Principal Park.
Southern League—AA—Tennessee 5, Chattanooga 1
Brad Markey and three relievers shut down the Lookouts while Mark Zagunis led a 14-hit attack.
Hitting Recap: Smokies grabbed a 2-0 lead on solo homers from 1B Bijan Rademacher (.296) and DH Cael Brockmeyer (.250). RF Mark Zagunis (.301) capped off his night with a two-run single in the 9th and singled and scored on C Victor Caratinii’s sacrifice fly. Zagunis finished 3-for-4 while CF Jacob Hannemann (.232) and 3B Jeimer Candelario (.243) both had collected two hits.
Pitching Chart: Brad Markey held the Lookouts to two hits and three walks over six innings, throwing 90 pitches, 52 for strikes. Markey fanned one, and recorded nine ground ball outs and seven fly outs. Game score 62. David Berg was perfect in the 7th, RH Juan Paniagua worked around two walks in a scoreless 8th and RH Corey Black loaded the bases in the 9th but preserved the shutout.
Smokies News: Smokies have Monday off and back in action on Tuesday when they host Jackson. Stephen Perakslis (0-1, 5.40 ERA) is scheduled to make his second start.
Carolina League—High A—Game 1—Wilmington 8, Myrtle Beach 4; Game 2—Wilmington 3, Myrtle Beach 1—10 innings
Wilmington (17-31) swept the Pelicans (26-23) thanks in part to a two-run 10th in the nightcap.
Hitting Recap: GAME 1—Pelicans never had the lead in the opener. Trey Martin ripped a two-run single in the 4th and Jeffrey Baez added a RBI groundout in the 2nd.. The Pelicans final run scored in a throwing error after Martin stile third. Ian Happ (.280) extended his on-base streak to 16 games, going 2-for-3 with a walk......GAME 2—Pelicans needed two errors in the 4th to score their only run of the game—Happ crossing home after the catcher threw the ball away trying to compete a double play. Baez (.242) had two of the Pelicans five hits and Happ singled to extend his on-base streak to 17 games. Pelicans were 0-for-9 with RISP and had the bases loaded and one out in the 9th but couldn’t score.
Pitching Chart: GAME 1—The Blue Rocks collected eight hits off Jonathan Martinez (3-3, 3.88 ERA), scoring five times over five innings. Martinez fanned three in the 78-pitch outing and had a game score of 32. Tommy Thorpe worked a scoreless sixth but surrendered a three-run homer in the 7th......GAME 2—Zach Hedges tossed seven innings on one-hit ball but didn’t figure in the decision. The right-hander retired 20 of the final 21 hitters he faced, needing only 79-pitches in the gem. He coaxed 13 ground ball outs, fanned three and walked one. After a runner reached on a error in the first, Hedges allowed his only hit, a RBI double. James Farris (1-2, 2.54 ERA) kept the Blue Rocks off the board for two innings but gave up a two-run triple in the 10th.
Pelicans News: Trevor Clifton (2-3) and his 2.25 ERA (4th best in Carolina League) take the mound on Monday night against Wilmington.
Midwest League—Low A—South Bend 1, Lansing 0
Eloy Jimenez launched a walk-off homer in the bottom of the 9th to end a pitcher’s dual.
Hitting Recap: Only three hits for the Cubs but the only one that mattered was a long deep drive over the left field wall that ended the game. Eloy Jimenez’ 8th homer extended his hits streak to 16 games. The 19-year-old continues to impress at the plate and has six homers over his last 11 games. He’s also a candidate for his second straight MWL Player of the Week honors, hitting .407/.484/.741 with 2 HR and 10 RBI. SS Andrew Ely (.319) and CF Daniel Spingola (.328) both singled. Donnie Dewees and his 18-game on-base streak got the day off.
Pitching Chart: Carson Sands fanned a session-high five hitters an tossed six shutout innings. He walked four, allowed two hits and threw 82 pitches, 42 for strikes. RH Craig Brooks fanned three in two innings while Scott Effross improved to 3-0 with a 1-2-3 9th. The 15th round pick out of Indiana hasn’t allowed a run in his last nine appearances, (12.2 IP).
