Daniel Vogelbach hit his 8th homer to help lead Iowa to their fifth straight win. South Bend’s Ian Rice was named MWL Player of the Week.

Rice named MWL Player of Week

South Bend catcher Ian Rice was named the MWL Player of the Week. In five games, Rice hit .471/.550/.1.176 with three homers and eight RBI. The Cubs 29th round pick out of the University of Houston last June, Rice is hitting .368/.486/.514 in 19 games for South Bend.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 11, Oklahoma City 6

Iowa knocked out 16 hits to take the series opener over Oklahoma City and extend their win streak to five games. 

Hitting Recap: 1B Daniel Vogelbach (.309) smacked his 8th homer and finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBI. C Willson Contreras (.331) knocked in three runs with a triple and a single. SS Munenori Kawasaki (.257) went 3-for-4 while Logan Watkins (.229) was 2-for-5 with two knocked in. 2B Arismendy Alcantara (.260) had two hits and scored three times while CF Albert Almora (.315) was 1-for-5 with two driven in.

Pitching Chart: Alex Sanabia (1-1, 9.92 ERA) was the beneficiary of the I-Cubs offense, picking up the win with five innings of work. He allowed three runs on five hits and two walks with two strikeouts. Sanabia threw 84 pitches and had a game score of 45. Armando Rivero blanked the Dodgers for two innings, picking up three strikeouts and now has 33 K in 24.2 IP. Giovanni Soto tossed a scoreless 8th while Spencer Patton got the final three outs but the Dodgers scored three times in the 9th. 

I-Cubs Notes: Drew Rucinski (3-4, 5.93 ERA) toes the rubber on Wednesday night.

Southern League—AA—Jackson 10, Tennessee 5

Generals (33-18) knocked out 13 hits and took the series opener over the Smokies (23-26).

Hitting Recap: RF Billy McKinney (.252) slugged his first homer of the season, a solo shot in the 5th. He finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and is hitting .343 over his last 10 games. DH Stephen Bruno (.217) added two hits including a two-run double in the bottom of the 9th. CF  Jacob Hannemann (.241) extended his hitting streak to eight games, going 3-for-5 with a RBI and an outfield assist.

Pitching Chart: Stephen Perakslis (0-2, 4.50 ERA) only lasted three innings in his second AA spot start, allowing three runs (one earned) on six hits and a walk. Starling Peralta only got one ow tin the 4th, getting charged with four runs on three walks and two hits, including a homer. Jose Rosario surrender two runs in 2.2 frames while Josh Conway yielded two runs over two innings. David Garner worked a scoreless 9th.

Smokies News: Duane Underwood (0-1, 5.19 ERA) looks to even the series as he takes the mound on Wednesday night at Smokies Stadium.....SS Carlos Penalver committed his 10th error that led to two unearned runs in the first. 

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach

Pelicans had the day off and head to first-place Salem for a four-game series, including a DH on Thursday. Erick Leal (6-2, 3.71 ERA) get the start on Wednesday morning. Pelicans trail the Red Sox by 5.5 games. 

Midwest League—Low A—Fort Wayne 5, South Bend 1

Fort Wayne (27-25) scored four times in the final two at-bats to down the Cubs (31-19).

Hitting Recap: Cubs had 10 hits but needed a throwing error to score their only run. RF Eddy Martinez (.224) reached on a force play, sole second and was headed to third when the pitcher stepped off and made a wild throw to third, allowing Martinez to score. C P.J. Higgins (.285) went 3-for-5 while DH Ian Rice (.383) and 3B Jesse Hodges (.305) had two hits each. The 19 on-base streak of Donnie Dewees and the 17-game hit streak from Eloy Jimenez were both snapped.

Pitching Chart: Kyle Twomey has his best outing, allowing one hit (solo homer) over 5.1 innings. He walked five, fanned three and had a game score of 61. Casey Bloomquist (3-2, 4.66 ERA) gave up four runs (one earned), surrendering six hits and two walks in 2.2 innings.

SB-Cubs News: Adbert Alzolay (4-1, 3.05 ERA) takes the mound on Wednesday morning as the Cubs look to even the series in Fort Wayne.
