Rashad Crawford collected a career-high four hits to help Myrtle Beach to a 6-3 win over first-place Salem while Iowa won their sixth straight behind another strong outing from Drew Rucinski.

Pacific Coast League—AAA—Iowa 5, Oklahoma City 4

Drew Rucinski tossed seven solid innings and Iowa (25-26) hung on to beat Oklahoma City (26-25) for their sixth straight win.

Hitting Recap: C Willson Contreras (.337) led the offensive attack with two hits and two RBI. 1B Daniel Vogelbach (.314) double, tripled and scored twice while CF Albert Almora (.315) went 1-for-3 with two RBI. 2B Arismendy Alcantara (.260) tripled, knocked in a run and scored once.

Pitching Chart: Another quality start for Drew Rucinski (4-4, 5.55 ERA) as the right-hander scattered seven hits over seven innings, limiting the Dodgers to two runs. He threw 92 pitches, 60 for strikes, and had a game score of 61. Gerardo Concepcion fanned the side in the 8th and Carl Edwards, Jr. gave up three walks and a hit that scored two runs in the bottom of the 9th but fanned the final hitter for his first save.

I-Cubs Notes: Cubs have not named a starter for Thursday night’s game at Oklahoma City.

Southern League—AA—Jackson 4, Tennessee 3—5 innings-Rain

A three run-third gave the Generals a 4-0 lead but the Smokies couldn’t cut the deficit before rain ended the game after five innings.

Hitting Recap: LF Mark Zagunis (.306) went 3-for-3 with a two-run homer in the third and added a RBI single in the 5th,  knocking in all the Smokies’ runs. 2B Chesny Young (.316) had two hits and CF Jacob Hannemann (.242) extended his hit streak to nine games with a single, the longest for a Smokies player this season.

Pitching Chart: Duane Underwood (0-2, 5.52 ERA) came out throwing heat on Wednesday night, consistently hitting the radar gun at 97 in the first inning. Three two-out singles plated a run in the third and the Generals added three more in the 3rd, the final run coming on a solo homer. Underwood fanned a season-high seven in the 103-pitch outing and finished with a game score of 42.

Smokies News: Paul Blackburn (3-1, 1.62 ERA) takes the hill on Thursday night as the Smokies try to end their skid against Jackson. 

Carolina League—High A—Myrtle Beach 6, Salem 3

Rashad Crawford collected a career-high four hits and Myrtle Beach cut Salem’s lead to 4.5 games.

Hitting Recap: CF Rashad Crawford (.245) came into Wednesday’s game 2-for-his-last-30 with nine strikeouts over his last six games. So its no surprise he had a career day, going 4-for-5 with a triple, two runs scored and two RBI. Three two-out hits—1B Yasiel Balaguert (double), 3B Jason Vosler (single) and C Gioskar Amaya (single)—gave the Pelicans a 3-0 lead in the 3rd. They added two more in the 4th when Crawford tripled in a run and scored on Ian Happ’s RBI single. In the 8th, Crawford delivered his fourth hit of the day, a RBI single scoring DH Jeffrey Baez (.242). Happ extended his on-base streak to 19 games.

Pitching Chart: Erick Leal (7-2, 3.33 ERA) won his Carolina League high 7th game, holding the Red Sox to an unearned run on three hits and a walk over five innings. He fanned one and threw 75 pitches, 53 for strikes, for a game score 59. LH Tommy Thorpe fanned three in three scoreless frames. RH Daniel Lewis only got two outs in the 9th, surrendering two runs on two hits and a walk. Daury Torrez retired Yoan Moncada for the final out to record his first save.

Pelicans News: Pelicans play a twin bill on Thursday with RH Jeremy Null (1-1, 2.55 ERA) starting the first game and RH Jake Stinnett (4-1, 3.09 ERA) set to go in the second game. 

Midwest League—Low A—Fort Wayne 6, South Bend 2

Fort Wayne (28-25) knocked off South Bend (31-20) for the second straight game as the Cubs are now tied for first with West Michigan.

Hitting Recap: Cubs took a 1-0 lead in the first when CF Donnie Dewees (.283) tripled (MWL best 9th) and scored on a wild pitch. They were blanked over the next seven innings and scored in the 9th when LF Eloy Jimenez (.328) doubled and scored on a RBI groundout by DH Ian Rice (.375). C P.J. Higgins went 2-for-4 and Dewees added a single for his 19th multi-hit game of the season.

Pitching Chart: Adbert Alzolay (4-2, 3.72 ERA) allowed a leadoff walk in the first that scored on a single but the right-hander battled back and blanked the TinCaps over the next three innings. He never got an out in the fifth. Two walks, three singles and a batter reaching on a fielder’s choice plated three runs and chased Alzolay after 73 pitches. He issued a season-high four walks, fanned three and was charged with five runs...... Pedro Araujo made his second appearance and walked the first batter he faced to force in a run. He got the next three outs of the 5th without allowing another run to score and fanned five in three shutout innings. Craig Brooks gave up a run in the 8th, his only inning.

SB-Cubs News: South Bend looks to salvage the final game of the series and send Ryan Kellogg (2-3, 4.60 ERA) to the mound, his 10th start of the season. The lefty sports a 1.34 WHIP and MWL hitters are bating .258 against him.
